Angry Caverns – now with Cavemen

ok Ok.. so they are still rather stick figure like.. BUT they switch comically between running and walking and change directions too.  You can watch a gameplay video of version 0.2 here.

screenshot-v02

At this point I’ve implemented 2 different enemies (bats & cavemen), 2 different weapons (stalactites & geysers), a combo system, tracking of stats like base level score, bonus score, and reporting back on a level over screen.

Many things still to do of course but my plan is still holding so far of trying to get the bulk of all implementation finished before generating levels and upgrading the graphics.

You can play version 2.0 here in your browser too.

Concept:
You are an extremely angry cavern. You awaken one day to find many creatures living inside of you. This pisses you off! You have a short amount of time on each level to use your cavern weapons to destroy as many creatures as you can. Kill multiple creatures with one attack to earn combo points and kill rare bonus creatures for extra score! Compete online with global leaderboards.

Controls:

  • Use your mouse to click on your weapons (stalactites, geyers, etc.)
  • Kill as many creatures as you can within the time limit.
  • Kill all the creatures for a big bonus!

Angry Caverns – v0.4 Sound Added!

I’ve finished plugging in a bunch of sound effects for Angry Caverns and you can hear and play the result here (Flash)

Now I’m off to use Reason to compose a quick main menu loop and at least one level loop…

Then it will be time to generate some more levels than 1  !

EDIT: If anyone plays and the sounds are too loud / soft / annoying.. feel free to let me know!  Thanks  :)

ANGRY CAVERNS – by HybridMind – August 28th-30th, 2009
Created from scratch for Ludum Dare 15’s 48hr game competition

Concept:

You are the angry caverns. You awaken one day to find many creatures living inside of you. This pisses you off. Destroy as many as you can.

How To Play:

  • Click on the stalactites and bubbling vents to trigger your attacks.
  • You will have limited time on each level
  • Chain attacks for big combo points
  • Glowing creatures are worth more bonus points
  • Bigger completion bonuses for more creatures killed
  • Supports online leaderboards!

Tools used:

Coded in Flash / ActionScript 3.0 using the Flash CS4 IDE and using Dr. Petter’s sfxr for sound effects. I composed both music loops in Reason.

Got Feedback?

Feel free to email me at dave [at] hybridmind.com or visit my blog and leave me a comment.

I’ll be working on this game some more so any thoughts or suggestions while be taken into consideration for the post-compo version! Thanks for playing and I hope you have a good time with it!

I think I can make it that weekend. Though I may forget about the existence of LD and hack something together in the last 10 minutes… :)

Sorry for being a noob, but where are the rules going to be posted? Specifically, what time zone are you in?

I’m going to try! I’ve been looking at the Ludum Dare for a while now but never had the guts to join in until now. Unfortunately I’m not going to be able to program for most of Saturday because of high school commitments–I guess I’ll just have to work twice as fast during the rest of the time.

Mini LD 16 Teaser: Constraints

Constraints

Mini LD 16 is fast approaching!

It will kick off this Friday, February 19th at 9pm EST (GMT – 5)

The theme of this competition is Constraints.

Major goal:

  • To explore what game designs we are able to create given a certain set of arbitrary constraints

Minor goals:

  • To have the games share a common control scheme
  • To have the games share aspects of look and feel
  • To have total designer freedom of genre and topic

I won’t be announcing the final constraints until this Friday at 9pm EST but I’d like to provide a teaser of some of the things you may encounter.

Possible constraints:

  • Must work with a specific color palette
  • Limited to specific control inputs/keys
  • Music length limits (looping allowed)
  • Numbers of sound effects
  • Specific screen dimensions
  • Sprite or game object size requirements
  • Background graphics
  • Text limits
  • Levels / Waves / Rounds requirements

As I mentioned in my minor goals above–I have no intention of specifically limiting the topic or genre of the game you create. I want there to be at least that one axis of complete freedom for the designer as they work within the constraints.  I’m looking forward to this weekend–see you all soon!

EDIT: 9 pm Constraints posted

This looks fun. I’d like to participate. I’m wondering, would it be possible for me to enter using the same time limit but a different pair of days? I’m not going to be available Sunday.
17. Feb 2010 · 18:37 UTC
re: your question about my aesthetic intent… yes as a minor side effect I’m hoping we’ll end up with a series of game entries that will share far more in common then a lot of the compos that are linked by theme only. I feel it would be interesting to play a series of games with a common control, palette, dimension, and other constraints but where each designer implemented a completely different genre/topic within that. We’ll see what happens… :)

This sounds really interesting. I might have to participate. I like the color palette idea. It’d also be cool if there where three or so pieces of art to use.
19. Feb 2010 · 10:16 UTC
Actually arrow keys + space is a problematic combination on standard/cheap keyboards so that should be avoided.

Ooh, like the constraints. Although the keys make any simple up/down/left/right controls unfeasible, I just thought up a game I can do. I might not finish it this weekend as I won’t have much time, but if I happen to get stuff wrapped up earlier than expected this is what I’ll be doing.

20. Feb 2010 · 12:33 UTC
For you guys without a mic, a quick and easy trick is to plug your earbuds or headphones into the microphone port on your computer. The sound quality is appalling but for making some sound effects it could yield interesting results. And since Ludum Dare is about using on-the-spot stuff (kinda) I think it fits the concept quite well.
22. Feb 2010 · 00:06 UTC
Ok,…now that the compo is over I want to say it was again much fun. Actually at the beginning I didn’t like the color-constraint but in the end I liked it very much being forced to use nice old dithering-technique with a somehow freaky crazy color result 😀

Still I’m not fast enough to really finish a game in 48h. But it’s getting better.
22. Feb 2010 · 00:29 UTC
I’m so excited to check out all these games! If you haven’t submitted your game into the newer system (link in post above) you may want to do that for ease of browsing the results of this mini LD 16.

This was a fun compo. Thanks for putting it on HM. I think in the future I will find someone to generate a nice color palette for me to use. It should reduce the art-block I usually get.

current prototype

prototype

This is like the fourth prototype I’ve worked on so far.  Things are going slowly today for me as I have been scattered between a few ideas while I hoped for one to spark my excitement.  I think I’ve finally got an idea I’m psyched about enough that I’m doing a bare bones playable version of.  Hoping the scope is right for the time remaining.  We shall see.

early playable demo

prototype2

I wanted to finally post a link to a playable prototype of my flash game in progress.

Make sure to click on the flash game window to give it focus or the keys won’t work!

It uses all 8 control keys (1,2,3,4 & 7,8,9,0) and they are currently mapped to 8 random UFO actions right now.  WHY?  Because you are playing a slacker alien that wasn’t paying attention in your UFO Academy and now it is time for your 3 minute final exam to see if you graduate.  You slacked so much you have no clue how the crazy thing operates.  You’ll have access of four directions of movement, an energy shield, a death beam, and two different particle attacks.  You must try your best to figure out how to annihilate as many humans, cars, tanks, jets, and helicopters as you can to see if you pass.

Currently using boxes for object art, no collision detections or scoring yet, and I’ve only implemented humans, cars, and helicopters behaviors.  I’m quite happy with how they are moving around though.

Rolling rolling rolling

Alien Flight Academy wip

Here is the latest flash build of my game (you have to click on the game before it will have key focus)

Starting to get collisions and scoring in.  Still need to implement time over conditions and enemy ramp up at various time points.  Need to get jets and tanks in now too.  You can get points now and be killed though.  Tons of balancing will have to be done once I get all the game elements in.  Oh and also hopefully add music, sounds, and more then rectangles for all the objects too! 9 hours left…

Alien Flight Academy: Graduation Day (FINAL)

Alien Flight Academy: Graduation Day

You can play this game in your browser (warning: sounds will play)

Concept:
It’s time for your final exam to graduate from your UFO school. Only problem is you were a complete slacker. You have no idea how to fly your ship. You have 3 minutes to impress your commander by destroying as many humans, cars, helicopters, tanks and jets as you can–or suffer the consequences!

All you can remember is to use the keys 1,2,3,4 and 7,8,9,0

Tools used:
* Coded in ActionScript 3.0 using the Flash CS4 IDE and using my mouth and microphone and Audacity to process the sound effects. I composed the music loop in Reason.

Figuring out the keys at the beginning was an interesting concept, though they were quickly discovered. I’m not sure there is merit to moving up/down, but it fun trying to figure out why I was falling and how to correct it.
AtkinsSJ
22. Feb 2010 · 11:44 UTC
FOr some reason, I couldn’t get into my head what the keys were, so I just mashed them all… and I got the current high-score! XD
22. Feb 2010 · 17:42 UTC
The input is really challenging…and have to admit I could resist the power of online Highscore! 😀 Good job
23. Feb 2010 · 10:15 UTC
Hmm…actually I like the game as it is! It is not complicated but you always have the ability to learn. e.g. flying up and down is absolutly NOT intuitive which keeps something like “if you learn to use that keys, you will get a highscore” (do you lose points if you got hit? I’m not sure I think you only loose energy, right?). Maybe loosing score would even encourage you to use more up and down. I can describe how I always play:

LD17

Extreme LD?

I am hardly going to have any time this weekend for the full LD experience but I may be crazy enough to try and create a game once I see the theme tonight.  I figure I’ll only have a bit of time tonight, a bit more Saturday morning, and a couple hours on a plane on Sunday.  I love LDs so much it is tough to miss one of the main ones when problems come up with your schedule.

If I manage to make a game it will be using Flash and Actionscript 3.0 possibly using the FlashPunk game library.

How does FlashPunk compare to Flixel? I’d like to get away from using Flixel, so if it’s any good for quick development I might give it a try
23. Apr 2010 · 14:48 UTC
@mocker I think a lot of the differences just have to do with personal development and code style to a large extent. I found that Flixel just didn’t fit the way I think or work on a game for some reason. I tried out FlashPunk and it was a natural fit for me. Both are great frameworks and are used by plenty of people so it likely comes down to style. I also want to try the PushButton engine too!

Hope you can participate, Dave! I’m gonna be rocking flixel again (although I have also thought about maybe moving to flashpunk… how is it?)

Montage and greetings…

HybridMind's Montage

So there is my montage. It has been really fun looking at all the other montages people have been posting.

SO MANY GAMES WERE CREATED HERE AND THAT IS AWESOME!

I’ll either be using Flash IDE and ActionScript 3.0 from scratch or HTML5 and Javascript/Canvas via Akihabara game framework if I am feeling adventurous enough to use LD to learn a new tech. Depends on whether I’m gonna do the compo or the jam. Will probably wait to see the theme announcement to make up my mind. I’m worried the jam might not quench my competitive spirit especially since I missed the last April LD.

The thing I am pretty excited about is that a few of us New Englanders are getting together tomorrow to develop in person over in Portsmouth New Hampshire.  If anyone else is in the area you’re welcome to join us! We’ll be picking out a non-crowded cafe over there tomorrow and about 4 of us will be getting together so far. Pretty psyched about that part for sure!

Long live Ludum Dare!

oh wow, is that “Runaway Train”?

Idea and mockup

mockup1

Got my basic idea in place. Since there is so little time in this competition I was looking for an idea that I believe will be a good balance of fun with ease of implementation. This theme is fun and so wide open I expect a ton of similar base ideas implemented in many different ways.

My idea is simply an arcade score or collect-o-thon based around using various types of enemies on screen as your weapons to hit the collectibles.  In the screenshot above you are the target or bullzeye player which will be mouse-controlled.

You will fly around and lure the enemies into following or shooting at you. Once they are coming at your player you can move them around to hit the collectibles.

Simple and basic but it leaves a lot of room for fun and messing around with that mechanic.

More progress

mockup2

Got a basic palette picked out and started throwing things into the flash editor and so here is mockup number 2. This is going to be what the first playable prototype will look like as I seek to get a playable game ASAP. Then it will be time to swap out all these simple shapes for final art once it is tuned and fun.

The 5 sided shape is the player, the circles are the collectible targets (only score when enemies hit them), the pink squares are seeker enemies (think homing missiles) and the orange spikes are proximity shooting spikes that launch in a straight path.

Playable Flash Prototype

First Playable Flash Prototype

This is my first playable prototype. This represents a little under four hours of work in Flash.

Try to draw the enemy orange spikes and red seeker boxes into the yellow circles for points by using your pink pentagon to lure the enemy in. If you hit the enemies you lose points. Basic proof of concept at this point is finished.

It is 2am here and I think I’m quite happy with what I’ve got down for the first evening to sleep on. I’ll be meeting up with 3 other LDers tomorrow over in Portsmouth New Hampshire to continue the game dev in the fun company of others. Sleep now!

Timelapse of my creation so far

Good morning Ludum Dare!

Managed to catch about five hours of sleep–my regular nightly amount for most LDs.

I was thinking–if timelapses are fun after the compo to watch they are certainly fun to watch during a break while the compo is going right? 😀

Before I head over to the Portsmouth NH Ludum Dare meetup I figured I’d render out the timelapse of me creating my first playable prototype (always an important milestone for me) in the first four hours of the competition.

Not sure if you can embed videos here so here is the link:

Lunch at "Me and Ollies"

Finally managed to get some lunch here at “Me and Ollies Cafe” in Portsmouth NH. I’m working here with Johny D and BillNye downstairs in a great community room with great tables, food, wifi, and AC.  It’ll be open till 6pm so any other nearby LDers that want to stop by are more than welcome. Gotta finish this lunch up and get back to work on my game!

FUEL!

Now to counter act the sleepy chicken sandwich I ordered a nice iced mocha with whip cream. Soon it’ll be time to make some real progress… 😉
