LD24

Finally, I think I should say I’m In

With under 20 hours until the competition begins (I started writing this when it ticked over), I finally remembered I needed to make one of these posts. I have been planning ot do this competition since the last LD, where I made my first ‘game’ even though there where many glitches and bugs and it was unplayable on Macs due to me being silly when programming. But I did finish it, so this time I aim to do the same! Since the last LD I have started to learn Flashpunk with AS3. I do have some *limited* previous experience with flixel but thought that it was too platformer oriented, so I started to learn Flashpunk and have to say, I am loving it. So here is my post:

  • Engine/Framework: Flashpunk
  • Language: AS3
  • Editor: Flashdevelop V4 (I think…)
  • Audio: SFXR, or something of a similar kind..
  • Music: FL Studio or Garage Band if I feel like my game needs it
  • and finally Graphics: Now it either depends what I will be doing. Either Paint.Net (for pixel stuff) or Flash CS5 (if I decide to go with Vectors for characters)
  • Tiled or Ogmo for Map Editing (or I might do some bitmap levels in Paint.NET or Photoshop CS5)
  • Timelapse: Chronolapse

So I think that’s about all I need to say. I will be streaming over at http://twitch.tv/atomicmonkeypro so come by and watch me code and stuffs 😛 Hopefully I don’t get too distracted by talking to people on Skype or Youtube.

And after the compo I will be planning on releasing the timelapse on my YouTube Channel http://youtube.com/AtomicMonkeyPro along with an idea that another LD’er suggested to me. A documentary on the creation of it. I do not plan on doing it immediately after or during the competition, but I thought it could be a fun way to make a *different* Post-Mortem, even though I will still make the normal text entry on here.

Have fun and congratulations if you are still reading this! 😛 All of your have fun in your game making weekends!

Oh yeah, and there is no way I’m ever gonna make a 3D game for this comp 😛 2D awesomeness all the way!

EDIT: Oh, I was going to write something, then just forgot it… a friend distracted me. WAIT, that’s what it was.

I did a warmup game last weekend to help me learn Flashpunk. It was very simple and easy but have a look: http://tinyurl.com/JaydenB

Progress Update 1 – Platformer Basics!

So if some of you don’t want to read the post, here is the link: http://tinyurl.com/jaydenb

Controls:

Arrow Keys to Move and Space to Shoot

So, after a few hours I have some basic enemy AI done (they bounce off walls) and the platformer basics, which means double jump and collision with the tilemap 😀

I’m using FlashPunk and vector graphics made in Flash CS5. After I get the gameplay down and finished I will figure out how to change the swf files to an animation and make you face in the *right* direction.

See you people soon 😀

Volve – Complete!

Click here to play —> http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-24/?action=preview&uid=2893

(Pronounced Vol-vee) Just so you guys don’t pronounce it like Valve with an O instead of A 😛 If you think about it, it’s kinda like saying ‘wall-e’

Help protect your companion ‘Volve’ from the evil spirits sent down from the sky.
Use your trusty weapon to help defend him until he has fully evolved!

Long bar down the bottom tells you how much time until next evolution of Volve!

Controls
Arrow Keys – Player movement.
Spacebar – Fire bullets.

Created in FlashDevelop with Flashpunk. My first ever real game that I am actually happy I finished (I did attend ludum dare last time but was not happy with the final result. I still submitted though) This time I feel satisfied with what I have. And Flashpunk is awesome so I’m definetly continuing to use this!

Hmm, you just go either lower corners and press space like a monkey and just watch the egg creature to grow and win the game. wot? That is hardly an interesting game mechanics. Would need a bit more. Looks nice thought., althout “evil spirits” looks more like a astronouts.

Wheee, go Jayden! Brilliant game for the 48 hour time period with those annoying sound effects but overall I think it is pretty good but needs more challenges, it feels a little bit like an easy Super Crate Box at the moment. Try adding a larger level and more enemy types.

I’m out :(

I was going to be in even though I was leaving on holiday but just realized my plane leaves the moment the theme is released (I might still be able to get it if I hurry/get boarded late) and I am in a plane when it finishes :( So yeah, if I get the theme before I leave I could use my first 5 hour fights to dish a quick game up but if not I hope you guys all have fun developing!

Im in, or trying to be.. (while flying in an airplane)

So I get on an airplane 1 hour before the theme is released. I have written them down on my iPad and try to come up with a concept that fits any/all of them. My working space is the fold-down table of the seat in front of me.

If I end up guessing the wrong theme I’ll just enter it into the Jam and work on the next plane ride to converting it to the proper theme.

Tools:

  • FlashDevelop (i hope its installed)
  • Flashpunk
  • Photoshop (ART)
  • FL Studio (maybe for sound) or SFXR (its really whatever I have on my computer, I wish I was more prepared)

So yeah, see you all in Bangkok with hopefully a workable game 😀 (5 hours is enough… right?)

LD26 Complete!

So my “I’m In” post didn’t end up going through on the website and I feel terrible for not having or writing any journal for this time, but I have completed.
After going through 3 different ideas, 2 of which where based off the same basic engine I built, I ended up going for my first idea which was different than all the others! (finally a non-platformer game for me :D)

But if you want to play my games, head on over to http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-26/?action=preview&uid=2893 and have fun with my one level, more of a tech-demo of sorts over a full game. I think I will definitely create a post-compo version of this with more (actually some) puzzles!

Hope everyone had a good weekend jamming and a good next two weeks playing everyone else’s creations!
