I have now made games for 50 jams (acturly 54), and I have therefore decided to make an old jam game into a celebration of the small anniversary. This is not made for this jam, but I still wants to share it with you all. It's called "Where are all the aliens" and it's humours museum game, with a bit of puzzles.

And then I also have to say thank you for another great Ludum Dare. It was my 14th LD (plus 2 MiniLDs), and if I look at my score the game was not very good. But I liked making it, and for me it was not too bad.

I could begin to complain about the ratings system, the jam theme, the fact that I got really low ratings, but it's not why I'm writing this. I love Ludum Dare, and I do this even with its mistakes and its funky weirdness. And from that Ludum Dare I really felt in love with game jams.

I have since the first Ludum Dare been in total 14 Ludum Dares and 2 mini LDs. And even though I have been here many times, I have never been really close to winning anything. But it does not change anything, because I like the community, and even as important as making my games, I really love playing your games. I have over the years played so many of your lovely, strange, buggy and wonderful games. And thank you all for making them, and even more important sharing them with us all.

But my interest for game jams is not only for Ludum Dare. So I have now made 54 small, weird and properly pretty bad games for different game jams, and my love for the jams is still the same. I have made all of my jam games alone and with the LD's strict compo rules, but I have allowed myself to use the time the different jams has allowed me to use on making them.

To celebrate making 50 jam games, I have for fun taken an old game jam game and made it into a small celebration game. I am sorry it's not a LD game, but I found a game that I could make into a funny little museum/puzzle game. The game is called "Where are all the aliens". I would really like if some you tryed to play the game, and it would perhaps also be fun for you, especially if you have tried to play some of my jam games.

I have tried to make you play the game some times now, and it had not really happened, so I decided to make a better version of the game. I already know that a lot of you will not like me for what I am going to be saying in this post. So before you keep reading this, you should know that this is written by a mad old man that should have learned to smile more and complain less. But I am just so much better at complaining then smiling.

Before I start complaining, I will say that the Ludum Dare community is, at least in my opinion, the absolute best game jam community. People here are great at sharing what they have learned, showing us how they made there games, and they are pretty good at giving feedback. Mike Kasprzak have done a lot to make this spot on the internet into an amazing place for passionate game jammers. And I am as always really happy to be here because of this.

BUT because something is really good, does not mean that it can't be better. So now comes the part of this post you will probably not going to like, and I am sorry if you will feel offended by what I have to say, but I think it is important to say it anyway. The issues is that we are perhaps not so great at jamming as we might think we are. And yes, we are sharing our work and giving feedback. But there is also a lot of self promotion, half assed feedback and in general there is a very short living dialog. Before any you of getting too mad at me, I do know that I am guilty of some the things myself.

Let me start with the self promotion issue. I do understand that you want a lot of people to play your game, and you have probably made an amazing game that everybody should play. And I guess most of us want to have a lot of people playing our games. But the main issue is that when you write a self promoting post on the front page, it is often on a game that already have got a lot of feedback and ratings. I also see a lot of self promoting from people that is too lazy to play, rate and give feedback to other peoples games. Sadly is this self promoting working way too well, and it gives a lot of players trying their games. The worst part of this issue is that it removes the attention from all the games that still needs to be played, rated and given feedback.

Then there is the half assed feedback. This is feedback I guess that most of us is guilty of writing. We are in this kind of feedback writing things, that we are not really thinking. We do this to be kind, or we don't like to hurt those people that have made the game. Maybe we are just afraid how they will judge our game, if we are too hard in our judgement of their game. I think we should be a bit less afraid of being critical. I know after every Ludum Dare ends and the ratings get revealed their will be a lot of people that is confused that their rating is not that great, and they have only got positive feedback. And I am not asking for people to write long super detailed and super critical feedback. I just want you to be a bit more honest, and tell them/us the issues and not only the good things. And remember also do this to games you think is really bad, but do remember, it always a good idea also to find a least a few good things to say about those games.

Now to my critic of the missing or at least the very short living dialog. This is not a hard criticism, but more of a hope that we will be a bit better at having a dialog. If you for example gets some interesting or good feedback, then maybe try to go into dialog with this person. When you go into dialog you have the opportunity to learn and understand the feedback better. In my experience, I got most out of game jams when I have been in an longer dialog with somebody that could help me or could help them to do something better.

Then I have a last small complain, and I write this complain as the last thing, because them I will give this critic to, will most likely not read this post. But anyway PLEASE remember that game jams is not just about making games, it is also about rating and giving feedback on other peoples games. Even if you feel like your game is bad, you are still part of the jam, and I am also interested in your feedback. Do not be afraid of the feedback we will give to your game. We all understand that game development is difficult, and some times we fail to make the things we really want to. And even if you are inexperienced your feedback is still important to us.

There is about 10 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 mg of spam here on LD.

I love using Unreal Engine to make my games, but I sometimes thinks this game engine is made in a way that makes people not wanting to play my games. So here is a list of ways it preventing people from playing my games (especially my jam games):

1) No way to upload a version of the game that can be used in a web browser. Okay, there was ones a solution but it was never really good, and it was not very easy to use.

2) Big file sizes. It can be reduced a bit, but often it gives more issues then it solves to do this.

3) When you have a game with a big file size, you automatically get less downloads. If you are really lucky you get so few downloads, that the browser begin to warn people from downloading it at all. The warning says "That because it is nearly never downloaded, it must be dangerous to be downloaded".

4) If or when you download the Unreal Engine games to your Windows PC, and try to start the game you get the "blue warning of terror" that tries to prevent you from starting the game. And if you do not select the option to get more options you can't start the game at all.

5) You will naturally also be stopped if you haven't already played a unreal game before, because then you need to install some really important plugins.

6) If you are so brave you insist on starting the game, there is a high chance you get a final warning, telling you that the game wants to connect and send information through your network. What a reassuring and relaxing message to get when you try to play a game from a unknown person.

7) If none of this have stopped you, then you can play the game. Or maybe you can't, because naturally Unreal Engine is pretty demanding on your PC. So there is a high chance it will only run with 5-15 frames per second. Or even better it will not run at all.

8) I am sorry to everybody else using Unreal Engine to making your jam games, but there is one more thing that will stop people from playing Unreal Engine jam games. And it is that games made in UE (especially in jam games), they are often pretty doll and extremely similar. The issue is the game engines templates, is getting used by way to many people, and it is sadly used in a not very innovative way. If you like me have played a lot of unreal engine jam games, you are probably also pretty tied of template games. So this sadly gives one more reason not to play my UE jam games.

There is probably more great reasons not to download and play my Unreal Engine jam games, but I think this is more then enough. And by the way this is not a way to getting you to play my game, it already got more then enough ratings. But what I really want to say is thank you to everybody that still is playing my game, even though they have to go through all those demanding obstacles.

There is so many games that nearly no one plays, and it making me so sad. It is all of us responsibility to play the games we made for this LD. Don't fear playing games that perhaps are looking and sound bad.

If you made a game you might think is bad, then don't letting this stop you playing, rating and giving feedback to other people games. Yes, they will most likely also play your game, but you will probably be surprised how forgiven and friendly the LD community is to 'bad' games.

All of you streamers and Youtubers can also help the shy game developers to getting their game played. It is easy to aske people if they want you to play their games, but with this system you all end up playing the same games, that already gets way too much awareness, and you removing it from the games that really needs attention.
