Duggy on the Switch

Someone said "hey wouldn't it be cool to have it on a handheld?" :D And jep here it is - but currently yet not public available for you.

Gaining your feedback and plan to release a small game for the switch for it.

Runs pretty good on the switch btw.

In the meantime you can play my game in Windows or Web (Web has still the highscore issue sometimes so i prefer windows). Play it here : https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/48/duggy

Duggy - Come and play!

First : thank you for your overhelming positive feedback. That means a lot for me.

From my history of Ludum Dare "April Jam" Games this one is the best. Maybe not the best of all my LD games but the best in fluid gameplay.

Your feedback is helping me to make more out of it. I plan to release it to the Nintendo Swich for some bucks.

duggylevel2.gif

For this i plan to add more content first. Also i think about procedural generated levels.

Do you have any other suggestions for me ?

Come and try it out here : https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/48/duggy .

Finally it is the last day to rate the game.

But playing is still possible after the deadline ends :)

duggylevel2.gif

Also i plan to make a switch version for it with a 2 player mode and more levels. Thank you all for your great feedback and ideas to improve my game.

Results are in.

Well i expected better as the comments where really positive at all. But i think there are so much games out there which were pretty good.

However i was bit disapointed (i thought THIS time i can escape the "curse of the april LD jam" ratings). Ratings in the april jams was every time not the best. Mostly it was the game sucks a bit :D This time i had more focus on the gameplay - and i like it. I also chilled this jam bit more than the last both and though "well its april jam, i dont expect much so don't grind the game". Worked out good at all.

I was really wondering that a game like Fallums wins the jam category.

Don't get me wrong - congratulation to you. You deserve it really. I just didn't expected that a match 3 game like columns would hit the overall category.

However - this is how LD works :) Expect the unexpectable.

See you the in the next LD.

Ludum Dare 49

I'm in!

So it is this time again - Ludum Dare 49.

If you feel not in the right mood and want some warmup i would suggest you watch some "Ludum Dare Post Mortem" from Pixel Phrophecy (See : https://www.youtube.com/c/PixelProphecy/videos). This is a task that i do everytime now in the week before.

It gives you the right mood to cry when the theme is announced ;).

Besides this i thought about this time "How to prepare right?". How do you prepare your code base or tools for Ludum Dare specially for the Compo ?

My setup: - Unity 2020.3 (Probably using Cinemachine, Tiles, Pixel Perfect and UWRP). - Aseprite - Photoshop maybe for some high res art - Bfxr for Sfx - Beebbox or Boscaceil for Music (also have some other tools here too)

This is my 11th time in a row i participate in Ludum Dare.

So here are some small advices (and to myself - i should REALLY follow some of them...this time).

  • As Jupiter Hadley said in the keynote: "work on the fun mechanic first and then polish". Yeah i should really do this this time really. The reason is: if the game mechanic is not fun or sucks you will notice that too late when you first polish. Some of my Ludum Dare games (many of them) suffer that.
  • Start with the minimalistic feature set that your game needs. Strip features or write them on the "nice2have" list
  • Have a tasklist could be important. A txt or just trello is enough for it.
  • Jam Tip: if you are not good in music, just use some Public Domain music in your game and opt-out the category. The reason is: when your music matches it has influence of the gameplay complete. It feels much better.
  • Don't stress totally out. Take some pause sometimes.
  • If you want to hit the compo but feel at sunday that your game needs more time - just don't submit it anyway. Take the extra time and submit to Jam. I made the mistake some times :)
  • If the game is bad on monday evening but playable - why not submitting it? The feedback you get is really helpful.
  • If you have things on the list you don't know how to make, just try to figure out first. Because you don't know how long this could take.
  • Don't learn a new engine on the jam. Mostly this wouldnt work (ok sometimes it does but its extra stress).
  • Build your project sometimes (even if you target WebGL - this has often problems).

These are my advices....hope it helps a bit. And i hope i really take care of gameplay first.

Have a nice time and i am so excited to see what games you all made.

Cybotica is live

Well its done and my game is now live for Windows currently only (Web will come later - need to fix annoying Sound bug first that i have so long now).

Welcome to the destructive world of Cybotica. Play Cybotica here : https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/49/cybotica

Cybotica can now be played+rated

Well its done and my game is live for Windows currently only (Web will come later - as there is again an annoying soundbug which i had in all other LDs too).

So....WELCOME TO THE DESTRUCTIVE WORLD OF CYBOTICA.

Play Cybotica here : https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/49/cybotica

Cybotica has now a HTML5 Build

You can now play it directly in the browser.

Wanna play some Cybotica ? ;)

Come, shoot and jump here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/49/cybotica

Can you survive in this destrutive world?

Come one and try it. Pro Tip: Even if you can shoot enemies it is sometimes not so good to use so much bullets ;)

Play it here : https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/49/cybotica

Thinking about a "full game" version of Cybotica!

First: if you havent played it and you want to play - check out here : https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/49/cybotica .

cybotica.gif

It is a platformer with a fully destructive world.

Second and more important: i like the game. I think it has potential for more. This is something which i often think in a LD.

What i now need: tell me what you would like to see what is missing in this game. I mean : more different enemy types ? Sure! Much levels ? Sure!

But what else ? You can just comment it here if you want.

I just started to polish the levels a bit more and test around.

Oh and i increased the screensize so that you have a better look for the level to see whats going on.

Obligatory "Last Day" Post ;)

So as usual it is this "last time to play my game" post (which is not true as you can play the game further then - just the last time you can vote :D).

If you want you can rate my game here - a destructive 2d platformer made in 48 hours for compo : https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/49/cybotica

cybotica.gif

However more important is to help other to get their game a score - so have a look into the "Danger" category.

This Ludum Dare was a good one (even if i first thought the theme wouldn't but it matches pretty good). I made a game which i wanted to make some years ago after my first "Broforce" gaming phase.

So it is something similiar like this and could be a good base for more.

See you other guys on the other side.

Results are in, i am very satisfied with it :)

First thank you all vor your voting.

So that is my result and i am really satisfied with it.

ld49res.PNG

I think its my best result for graphics so far and also satisfied with fun and overall ratings (as they are pretty good).

Also had a look into the winner section (and hopefully someday i will made it too there :joy: ) - you all had made a great job and noticed i missed some of the greatest games here.

So i might play them now ;)

My LD48 game Duggy is now on pre-sale for Nintendo Switch!

I am proud to announce that my Ludum Dare 48 game Duggy will come to switch very soon.

It is now on pre-sale here: US : https://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/duggy-switch/

EU : https://www.nintendo.co.uk/Games/Nintendo-Switch-download-software/Duggy-2166152.html

After the Ludum Dare and after many monthes i decided to improve the gameplay and make a fully arcade game with more levels and increase the difficult.

Also you can collect lives when you reach specific amount of score.

To be honest: this might not be my greatest game but what was important ist to put the name from my son (who had this idea for this game) in the titel screen (which is btw. important for every developer to put).

Hope you have fun playing it.

Ludum Dare 50

I'm expect to fail! :D

Hello all together, it is a new seasons in "Ludum Dare" now with 50th edition.

I am - maybe - in. This depends a bit if i come up with an idea with motivates me enough to complete.

This time i plan to chill a bit. So instead of wake up early in the morning and go early sleep on friday i will wake up normal and checkout the theme.

The plan is to talk with my son about the theme and try to find some good ideas and decide what we want to make.

Why to chill this time a bit ? Well the problem is that my april jam games are often not the best (Duggy was a small suprise to me - which is btw. in the eshop (see https://www.nintendo.com/store/products/duggy-switch/ which was also an idea from my son).

The problem about that that my ideas were not good enough and i just wanted to take part - just to be part of Ludum Dare (dont care about if my motiviation or idea felt good enough).

So this time the deal is simple: - if we come up with a good idea to make we will make it - if we are not fully behind this idea, we will make nothing (this will be a hard decision as it would break the row since Ludum Dare 38 i made everytime something haha).

So lets come to the setup.

Also i maybe try to use GoDot this time ? I try to complete my 10h Udemy course until then (btw. from a guy who also took part in ludum dare here - see this: https://www.udemy.com/course/create-a-complete-2d-platformer-in-the-godot-engine/)

I know using a new engine is a "no go" in game jams - but i think..why not ? :)

Have a good time jammers.

I'm probably in!

This could be my 12th LD Jam in a row ;). So its also a long journey to go.

I hope i come up with a good idea this time - as sometimes it wasnt a good idea hehe. So thats why i say "probably" because this time i decided to just make the game when i feel that this is the right game to make. The Theme always suck (ok..now always but mostly).

Toolset: - Art: Aseprite as always - Music: Beepbox for music maybe - Sfx: maybe beepbox or sfxr - GameEngine: Unity or GoDot (i just had started learning GoDot which i really like but i am not sure if this is a good idea for a jam :)) - Stuff: Moisturizer! ...or even just coffee and energy drinks

Small tips from a "LD Veteran light": - think small (the Compo is 48 and the Jam 72 but the effective time might be a bunch of less more) - doing art later when you are solo - get the key loop done first - (Unity Only): If you want to publish WebGL, test very often as it might suck sometimes. However you can always export to Windows as fallback. - playtest could be important but as i know from myself (and from many post mortems of Phil Strahl) we never have time to playtest often. Sometimes time is so less that we just try to do a playthrough and publish then. - if your game getting good ratings, you should not care too much about. It is more about fun. I often forget this too :) - You can prepare a template project for the jam which means you can have a skeletton with title screen, game over scene etc. as a base. Any codebase is allowed from yourself.

If Folklore wins...

If Folklore wins that would be ....

Got checked all themes and thats the only one which is a so bored topic..i wouldnt have a good idea haha :joy:
