Ninja’s Ascent is Complete!!!!

Hey fellow game jammers, I’m very proud to say that our (my roommate and I) first Android app is finally complete! A while ago I posted about it, but back then it was only at v0.3.0. This is the real deal. Version one point oh. I like to think of this as our October challenge entry, we’re just half a year late to the party (or half a year early 😉 ). The goal is to make a dollar. So far, we’ve made a whopping 77 cents off the ads. Raking in the dough! Haha. There’s a paid version for a dollar if one of you spectacular jammers would like to fulfill our goal on the spot! If not, you should still check out the free version and get us closer towards our goal! We’re on to our next project now, and looking forward to the LD in a month!

The game: The game is simple: just tap where you want to jump. You are a badass ninja who jumps on falling rubble to get higher. You have to jump quickly! Also, be careful to avoid those pesky UFOs and dodge those dangerous fireballs. Power ups help you avoid sticky situations, so make sure you grab them!

All feedback, suggestions, and criticisms are welcome :)

Also, the high score board is fully functional. See if you can get your name above mine 😉 It’s DrSuperSocks

5th Time’s the Charm!!!!

Hey all, my roommate and I are IN for the jam!! This is my 5th time doing the dare/jam, and it’s my roommate’s 3rd time. We are very excited for this one! My girlfriend just surprise visited me with a month worth of groceries!!! Lot’s of goodies for the jam 😀 Also, Finals are coming in a week, but who cares 😀

Our tools will depend on the theme and the game idea we come up with.

If our game is 2D…

– Game Engine: Fission, wrote it myself for the last LD. Grab it here: https://github.com/DrSuperSocks/Fission
– Art: Photoshop
– Music: Fruity Loops
– Fuel: Pizza and root beer

If our game is 3D…

– Game Engine: Snow, wrote it myself for 3D development. It has Irrlicht at it’s core. It’s not open source yet as I haven’t had time to refactor the code, I’m ashamed of it still. Message me if you REALLY want it. It has a level editor too.
– Art: Photoshop, Maya
– Music: Fruity Loops
– Fuel: Pizza and root beer

Happy gaming and coding, and good luck to all!

You might want to check the rules. Some stuff is not allowed if it’s not publicly available. I think.

But pretty cool you have your own 3D engine.

After 5 hours

So here we are at the 5 hour mark. This is our first time using Unity, and boy does it speed things up! There’s barely any code at all! So far, I still prefer using my own game engine, but I figured Unity would be a valuable skill to learn this weekend.

We’re making a minimalistic horror game! You run in circles in either direction to avoid the scaries. We’ve got the movement down.

Lunch Time

Almost at the 1 day mark! Here’s what we’ve got so far.

We finally perfected the level and controls. Also, we got in the scary bad guy. Next comes his AI, right now he just runs in circles. We’re pretty pleased with how this is coming out. Again, this is our first time with Unity, usually we use my custom engine, and I’m pretty happy with how easy it is to pick up. Also, this is our first time doing a horror game! I’m really hoping it comes out good.

Now then, off to lunch 😀

Day 1 Over

First day ended half an hour ago, and we’ve just made a change of hea – I mean camera. We decided that a first person camera is MUCH scarier 😀

Almost Sleepy Time

There’s just a few hours left in the night for us, but we’re going to take a little break now. A good friend of ours who is wayyy up in California joined the team! (We’re in Hawaii)

Additions:
– Some textures – courtesy of said California friend
– Game over :(
– Bad man teleports

Our Game is Up!

So we actually ended up finishing this game yesterday at around noon, but we waited to submit just in case we had additional motivation to work. We didn’t. But the game has everything we set out to put in it, there’s just not much polish. It’s a minimalistic horror game! You literally just run in circles, which is why we called it *Running in Circles* dun dun dun……… Scary. If you play on mute it’s not very scary :'(

We’re in! … in spirit

My roommate and I are in! But we already have an RTS-ish game that we’ve been working on for a while, so we’re going to use this week as motivation to pump out a lot of content and get the game to a playable state, but there has been too much work already done to submit it as an entry to 7dRTS. This game started back in LD 24, although we never actually finished a game we could submit. Since then, the game has been fleshed out and rewritten to work with the engine I wrote to use for LD 25 called Fission.

So the game is a multiplayer, sidescrolling, shmup RTS in a procedurally generated 2D universe. You colonize planets, build your drone army, then fly to other planets to conquer and expand. Much of the base game is functional, we just need to get the content in. There are many buildings that still need to be implemented, and right now there is only one type of drone. Enough chitchat – screenshots!

Conquer!

So the goal for this 7dRTS jam is to add in most, if not all, of the structure and drone types, bringing the game to a playable state. The game is operational now though, and we’d very much appreciate some testers to help us stress test! It’s only built for Windows now, but we’ll build it for Linux and Mac in the future (all of our 3rd party libraries are cross platform).

Grab the current build here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/17256312/WinClient.zip

EDIT: Controls.

– Hold W to move, you’ll move toward your mouse cursor.

– Left/Right mouse buttons to shoot.

– Up/Down to zoom in/out.

– Press T to chat, enter to send a message.

– Press the structure looking button on the HUD to bring up the structure menu to build.

– Hold space to use RTS controls. Click and drag to select drones, right click anywhere to perform an action (move, attack, gather).

Innnnnnnn

We’re in for the game jam, but we’re going to try to keep it in 48 hours. We’ve been experimenting a lot lately. Usually, we compete using my home-grown C++ game engine, but last time we went with Unity. This time we’re going to be using HTML5, JavaScript, and three.js! It’s going to be a really fun roller coaster because I don’t know JavaScript! Even better, we have a new addition to the team: my little brother. He’s very new to programming and only knows C++, so he’ll also have to learn JavaScript. One final thing, I’ve always been the only programmer, so having my little brother helping with the code will be a new experience. Really looking forward to this! Also scrambling to learn JS in the last 20 minutes before the competition…

The Team:

– Me (Programmer/IT Support)
– Lucas (aka HOOPLAH/Little bro/Programmer)
– Nainoa (Roommate/All things art man)
– David (Texture guy)
– David’s roommate  (Modelling/Drawing/Animating plz?)

The entire team will be involved in voice acting.

The Tools:

– Chrome + HTML5 + JavaScript + asjldfjalsdfkjlaswebdevstuffs
– Notepad++
– Maya
– Photoshop
– Gimp
– Sound Recorder

PS – As usual, the Ludum Dare has been scheduled at the most inconvenient time possible – the weekend before our next semester starts.

GLHF TOTES EXCITED

A new morning

Woke up like 2 hours ago, but I never posted an update, and I was too lazy to post one last night, so here’s an update. Still way behind on coding. Perhaps trying to learn JavaScript, three.js, and cannon.js all in one night while doing a game development competition wasn’t such a good idea. I spent hours wrestling with JavaScript’s automagically managed memory (I’m a C++ guy) and three.js’s content pipeline, but FINALLY we have a mesh imported!!

Update! We pulled an all-nighter…

So we pulled an all-nighter last night…and we got a lot done!  The level is nearly complete, we’ve tackled a few animations, modeled a bunch, drew concept art, switched from JavaScript to C++ (JavaScript makes me pull my hair out).

As of this writing we have four enemies total, one of which is stationary, as well as a final boss modeled.  We also have a massive level that will serve as the setting for the story.

Things we need to get done:

~texturing

~rigging, animating

~alternative models

ASDASJHDKASKDJHASKDJKHASD

This weekend has been a nightmare. We had an amazing team together, but I, the coder, really screwed up. I was arrogant enough to believe that I could learn JavaScript, three.js, and cannon.js all while trying to compete in the LD. I ended up realizing there was just no way I was going to be able to finish the game in JavaScript because I kept on having to troubleshoot things and learn things I should already know how to do. So, I ended up having to switch to C++ Saturday night (less than 24 hours before the dare ended, but luckily we’re doing the jam). After switching to C++, I made a lot of progress very quickly, but there just wasn’t enough time left to finish the game. So, I’m going to jam out as many features as I can in the last 2.5 hours and post what I have. So, while you dare enterers are all relaxing, please keep us jam enterers who are still suffering in your thoughts. Here’s some art and screens:

Unfortunately, there’s no way I’ll be able to get the boss battle in, but we are definitely going to continue this week and finish the game, because it’ll be so epic when it’s finished.
