Codename::GreyHat v1.02 is live!

Version 1.02

It's up and running, feel free to play it (or replay it!) and tell me what you think :)

Codename::GreyHat is a text-based adventure made in Unity, mixing a bit of hacking, a bit of detective work, and a bit of log-based storytelling to try formulating a new approach to the theme, ~~while avoiding making any actual art~~.

Devlog:

-:bug::hammer: The scrolling issues are finally (mostly) fixed! I’ve also added a visual aide in the form of a small arrow in the bottom-right corner that indicates you when the input is off-scren due to a large command output .

-:gear: I’ve also modified the UI elements to resize and position in relative fashion, instead of working in absolutes. This should provide compatibility with all screen resolutions. The build uses the native screen resolution at launch, so you shouldn’t have to worry about configurations .

PS: the command clear is still a bit buggy, and since it's really only a commodity (or was supposed to be) I recommend not using it at all right now.

Hey, I made a gif!

In true gamedev fashion, I eventually came around to recording some (albeit short) gameplay to make a showoff gif for my Compo entry Codename::GreyHat!

A detective/hacking terminal-based game made in Unity, with a focus on storytelling. I know it's a bit niche, but I'm sure you'll enjoy it if you give it a try!. Any feedback is appreciated!

Version 1.03 drops with WebGL support!

Version 1.03 :gem:

After a ton of sweat and tears, support for WebGL finally has arrived!

Porting the game to WebGL costed me way more than usual because the game uses StreamingAssets and I only knew how to use those locally. Porting the same functionality on the web has been such a pain, mostly because compile times for WebGL took easily 5-10 minutes each time :face_palm:, and the issues I was having happened only on the published versions, not on the editor.

DevLog :gear:

Besides the new port, this release also includes:

  • Fixed file names. In the employees and hospital servers, the logs referenced files that simply didn’t exist in the hierarchy. The logs have been edited to correctly point to the adecuate files.
  • Fixed file extensions. Sometimes it could be confusing to have files without an extension type, making the player think they were directories instead. Now all files have an extension type.
  • Improved usability. After watching a few friends playing, I noticed that a lot of inputs are just repetitions of the last command, with different arguments, or simply a corrected syntax. So to improve this usability issue, I’ve added a (very) simple command history cycle, allowing you to recover the last inputted command by pressing the “up arrow.

Wish you all a lot of fun playing Codename::GreyHat!

PS: this will probably be the last update for now, I've already used the Jam excuse to run from my obligations with the university way too much :P I'll probably expand a bit further upon the game, but probably after the Jam has finished.
