Come Forth by Starlight by Chris Bode

[raw]
made by Chris Bode for LD36 (JAM)
A metroidvania game set inside a recently re-discovered pyramid. I'm not saying it was aliens, but it was aliens.

------------------------------------------

Controls:

A and D to move
W and S to aim up and down
Shift activates diagonal aiming mode.

S to drop through platforms

L to shoot
; to jump

F4 enables some debug features. When in debug mode, K is suicide and backspace is reset, which simply reinitializes the game and returns you to the entrance of the pyramid.

Rebinding:

The executable version does not support key rebinding, but if you run the game from source, you can modify keybindings.lua in the source root.

------------------------------------------

The game is far from finished. It lacks the sound, enemy variety, and map size that I wanted to achieve, but it has progression and a win condition of sorts, so it'll do.

Made with L脰VE

The egyptian name for the Book of the Dead translates more accurately as "The Book of Coming Forth by Day."

Collisions are a bit wonky, sometimes i die despite landing on non hazardous platforms. There is not player model/sprite. Good job getting a game to completion. Also level design that involves dropping down and hoping that you do not fall on to spikes feels like a cheap way to add difficulty so I might advise to not go that path. Kudos to completing a game though. Hopefully you'll expand this.

Solid entry! I had a couple collision issues in areas with the boxes though and got stuck in the ground at one point, so I didn't get through the whole thing. The hitboxes on the little burrito slugs are also pretty unforgiving.

Unusual choice of controls btw, is there any particular reason you went with "L" and ";"?

@Sean Yeah, I encountered the box collision bug for the first time immediately AFTER submitting the game. Shooting upwards will typically destroy the block that is holding you in the ground

The control scheme is actually just a derivation of my GBA emulator keybindings. Left and right shift serve as the L and R bumpers, WASD for the D-pad, L and ; for B and A respectively. With those bindings, my game controls roughly the same as Metroid: Zero Mission.

The burrito slugs are robotic scarabs. (Trust me. Just go with it. I can't draw organic shapes to save my life.)

Well, other people already said most of the problems, so I'll keep it easy to say that it's still enjoyable for what you've able to made in 3 days.

Not bad for your first game, probably, since there's no account info when I clicked on your name.

Quite a lot of unfair death in this one, when you first encounter the spikes they're at the bottom of several leaps of faith and there's nothing you can do to avoid them but memorize the level. Also the character **is** a hitbox, and the slightest touch with anything that will harm you, kills you instantly. Some hit points and a more forgiving hitbox would help a lot. Good graphics overall, but an animated character would have been better than a white rectangle. Also why am I fighting loafs of bread in a pyramid??
