Eustus: On The Squid Farm, A game by Jared Saizdelamora

Created for Ludum Dare 32, "An Unconventional Weapon"

Controls:

-WASD/Arrow Keys (move)
-Mouse (rotate view)
-Shift (hold to run)
-Mouse click (attack)
-1,2,3,4,5 (cycle between different attack/utility squids after you've discovered them)
-Space (jump)
-E (when prompted)
-Z (change camera between freecam and follow)

Rotate camera with the mouse, press W/forward to move in the direction the mouse is pointing

CLARIFICATION #1: There is a day/night cycle in effect. It may start off dark. Just wait about 30 seconds for the sun to come up, or grab the lantern squid on the outside of the cabin.

CLARIFICATION #2: There is now a webGL version available on gamejolt, but so far it seems pretty buggy (The view stops rotating when the mouse reaches the end of the screen). Your best bet is to either play on a supported browser, or download the standalone.

Eustus is a simple squid farmer with a big problem; at the end of the month, he needs to come up with $500 dollars to pay his mortgage, or risk his farm be repossessed by the bank. So what's a squid farmer to do? Why, farm some squids, of course!

Your goal is to head out into the world, hunting and battling for food, which you can then take back to Eustus' cabin and feed to the mothersquid, allowing her to lay a fresh brood of squids. Then, you can take them out to Eustus' squid stand and sell them off for cash. Make sure you have at least $500 dollars saved up at the end of day 30, or the bank will take you for all you've got.

Take care in combat, for if you lose all 3 of your hearts, you'll be penalized and sent back to an earlier state. You can replenish hearts by purchasing them from the refrigerator in Eustus' cabin.

Take care outside, as when the sun sets and darkness falls, larger and far more deadly creatures can be found wondering the wilds. You can choose to sleep the night away at the mattress at Eustus' cabin.

Scattered across the world are various powerful squids that Eustus can use as both tools and weapons; Such as the squid hammer, which deals massive damage to enemies; The lantern squid, which helps to light the way; Or even the fabled cosmic squid, with super space age powers! Unconventional to be sure, but a squid farmer's gotta do what a squid farmer's gotta do.

DEVELOPER'S NOTE:
Thanks for taking the time to play E:OTSF! This is my second entry into the Ludum Dare comp, my first being the rpg-ish story generator Papercuts. As with most Ludum Dare projects, I intended to add a whole bunch more to this game, particularly in fitting with the theme, and adding all sorts of strange and nonsensical weapon and utility squids. But alas, 2 days is all to short a time, so most of that ended up on the cutting room floor. I'd like to think that using squids as weapons is pretty unconventional, but I guess in the end a few of the mechanics felt a bit... well, conventional.

All the textures in the game were hand painted with acrylic paints on parchment paper and cardboard. After having a lot of fun animating 2D ink on paper drawings for my last Ludum Dare submission, I wanted to take some of those techniques and apply them in 3D.

If you'd like any of the raw images or any of my blender/photoshop/garageband files, feel free to ask! I'd be happy to share!

In the mean time, I hope you enjoy, and please make a point to play as many LD games as you can this season!

#ludumdare

*EDIT 1: There was an issue with the mother squid's food cost for creating squids. Done been rectified! Also, camera switching now works. Huzzah!

*EDIT 2: MAJOR BUGFIX- So apparently, there was an issues with the enemy spawn script where 99% of overworld enemies weren't spawning. Has been fixed. Still trying to figure out how to get the mouse working on the webGL version. This is why we gametest.

I found the controls annoying. Had to lift my mouse and scroll all over the desk 3 times to turn around. Graphics was OK, kind of reminded me of Alone in the Dark. Good effort.

I loved the art style and the textures. Was really nice having a day and night cycle as well.

I found the world quite barren and even when running I found very little to interact with. Maybe it was just me though.

I would love to see more things done in this style.

For reason, I keep on reading the title as Estus. Too much Dark Souls lately I guess.

Anyways, got it to with Wine on Ubuntu. Unfortunately, the mouse doesn't get locked to the game screen region in windowed or fullscreen mode, which makes the game pretty difficult to control. Movement in general feels kinda clunky.

Graphics and concept are kinda of nice, I guess.

Shouldn't this be categorized as a "jam" since you had Tim Burton helping you out? jkjk

I spent way more time playing this than the other LD games so far. Quite fun! The controls could have been a bit smoother (e.g. the mouse click kept taking me out of game when it wandered to my other monitor) and such. But I thought the art was really nice--it embraced what it was and in doing so really contributed to the game's mood/atmosphere.

I like the interesting look of the game, and the walk animation is pretty humorous. The controls don't really work in the web player since the mouse is nowhere near sensitive enough.

The world is so barren. I walked outside and then walked around for quite a while but I didn't find anything. Eventually I came back to the house and found a bunch of stuff behind it. I think the game could be a little more focused.

Some of the graphical ideas seemed nice. a bit dark/tim burton-ish. But the game wasnt really playable due to the rough controls.

It is a great and very ambitious idea for a Jam and seems a lot of work behind this project, congratulations. I like the Tim Burton style but I didn't find it very fun, maybe because is very hard to play on web version and I didn't understand what I had to do at the beginning of the game (then I read the instructions) Maybe to improve the fun you need more game balancing but it is a great project for a Jam.

A unique world with many interesting features. Gameplay is not smooth, but the game is worth playing for the graphics and music alone.

A spider insisted on me riding on his back and the only times I was able to get off his back were the times he was preparing for a hit. He did finish me off in that occasion.
