Resolute by RosyPenguin

[raw]
made by RosyPenguin for LD24 (JAM)
Hey everyone! This is my third Ludum Dare but very first time as a programmer.

I jumped in this time around just for an excuse to learn some Flixel and AS3. Really just a test game, so don't expect much, I was happy enough just having something at all.

[edit] Finding some spare time to add more levels. Stay tuned.

[edit 9/2] There are now four levels total. Much thanks to Tenlki for the music! Next up more game mechanics.

I wish it was longer to see what it could have been.

Yeah, I second that. I bet it would have been pretty cool. Judging from the simple and solid mechanic (moving). Pretty sweet for your first game in Flixel. Or anything for that matter.

Thanks guys! I'll be adding more levels just as extra practice to make sure I have the sprite loading nailed down.

Nice start on a game, obviously it's incomplete, but it definitely has potential, I can see how you were approaching the theme of evolution with the art style changing. Funny thing is all the 3 styles are v. polished and would have been happy to play a game in any! Maybe try adding some obstacles next.

Good start!
My advice is always to add background music and sounds. SFXR + freemusicarchive should definitely make any game without audio much much more appealing. Even when the sound doesn't match very well )

Great start to a game - the controls feel solid and the graphics have a nice lo-res appeal. Obviously needs some sort of puzzle/enemy but it's a fantastic foundation.

it is easy to see that you have experience as an artist. even though it is a simple visual still it feels consistent and really nice looking. like it a lot!

I really like the musical progression in the Post Jam version. Still wish it were longer though! I was getting excited to see what the creature would become.

Now this is a good example how to get a really nice visual style with very simple elements. I especially like the player character animation.

Also in the future please make it so that holding a key will also move as tapping a single key constantly just to move one direction is kind of dull.

For a beginner game developer its very nice you made this for 72h. The graphics look nice, but I didn't understand why the pickups change in the second level...

This is a great start! I love the post-jam version, as it really starts to show the evolution of your graphics. Look forward to seeing more level to come!

What a great effort when this is your first try at programming. I enjoyed the gameplay. Nice simple approach but showed evolution from level to level. Agree about holding down the movement keys instead of the tapping! But other than that, a job well done!

The art of the little black dude holding the key on the "The End" screen was awesome! :)

Nice start- no challenge, like pac-man without the ghosts. Nice start though and great job as this was your first flixel game.

ah- now I see the theme!
I just played your Post-Jam version as well, and could totally see the progression or "Evolution" of the graphics with each level. I did not catch it with the jam version with only 2 levels it is not obvious but the post jam version makes it clear that that's what is going on and made me enjoy your game a lot more. Clever idea! Game looks great come level 4. nice pixel art!

Thanks guys! I'm still working on the post-jam, slowly restructuring the code to allow more obstacle types and better level design. I hope to have a new version up by the end of the judging period.

Things to come: pushable blocks, unlockable doors, holding down a key for continuous movement. Thanks for all the feedback :D
