"In the end, all civilisations fall. But some are remembered."

In response to the 'Evolution' theme, I decided to explore the evolution of civilisations.

Enter Vicariously: a game where you cannot hope to survive, but you can hope that your legacy might remain.

In Vicariously, you step through a civilisation's history, 1000 years at a time. You can build technologies, colonise other planets, attack and trade. The game is curiously multiplayer: there is only ever one board, and unless there are none left, players play as civilisations either just colonised (ie asexual reproduction) or just conquered (ie sexual reproduction).

I'm hoping that this lends itself to an interesting evolution of the universe provided.

Made in django/html/javascript/lesscss.

Finally, this was my first time to really do any real web development, so there are almost certainly going to be bugs. Please let me know if there are any and I'll do what I can to fix them going forward.

There's a lot of UI... not entirely sure where to start with it?

@Gareth - on each turn, there are only 4 moves: colonise, make tech, attack or trade.

Nice idea. At first it was cool to freeform name your own technologies and colony names, but it would have been nice to have technobabble generator give me a pre-populated choice or two.

I didn't really know what I was doing to be honest and felt a bit like it was just a webpage.

I want to see this fleshed out more so I can play more of it.

Really didn't know what I was doing, but it seems like there is quite a bit to the game. Always love a web-based game though.

I agree with the above comment about auto-generated names, I had to go to the jargon file to find out what comes after garply. :)

The loading between turns could have been handled a little better, it sometimes seems like the game locked up, but I got the general gist of the game. I like the idea of creating an entire civilization that could expand throughout space and encounter other players. It seems like this is a good start to a solid and unique multiplayer turn based strategy game, though it would be neat to see an overview of the entire live ecosystem.

UI was packed together really tight, had trouble telling what to do & why.

Not exactly sure what's going on. I conquered a neighboring civilization and invented a couple of military techs, I colonized some spots but it never did show me more of the map than that one square.

Surprisingly engaging considering there aren't really gfx or sound and you just click buttons :D

Also it is fun to have something that connects different play sessions together.

Like everyone else, I'm not really sure what I'm doing. Nevertheless, it's interesting and fun to mess around with it.

wow there was a lot of ui there. not sure if you needed it all. but if you did then man was it really confusing. interesting concept but the gameplay really needs to be fleshed out more. good job.
