However... I'll be bluntly honest. There were some missing controls that really should have existed, such as a key to force the next wave (the wait between waves at the beginning is waaaay too long), a key to restart the game after game over (rather than closing and reopening the game), WASD keys as well as just arrow keys to move, and perhaps something to toggle autofire while the mouse is held down... as clicking the mouse constantly was a bit tiring over time.
Graphically rather flat... the colours worked together so it was fine, and it works for this kind of game perfectly well. It's very hard to tell what the different guns in the evolution tab are supposed to be, which is something of an annoyance since you don't know what you're picking.
The sounds were okay, but a game like this could really have benefited from some fast paced, adrenaline pumping music later on, and slower music earlier on perhaps.
Overall I'd call this good, but it could've done with some music, better controls, and clearer weapon evolution graphics.
Finally, a standalone file would've been better than an installer, but I won't change your rating over that.
The theme felt kinda tacked on. Overall the playability was ok, albeit nothing new. I wish the character graphics were finished. :P I had trouble understanding what some of the icons meant, perhaps you could've just written the descriptions next to them (especially so I shouldn't go back to your post to see which weapon does what). I was really missing WASD, which is really a must for right-handed people while using the mouse.
I originally wanted to add jumping/flying enemies. Also, if you upgrade your jump height a bit, aiming below you becomes useful ;)
As for the theme, yeah every leveling system could fit the concept of evolution, but I think the theme were an invitation to try to add something else to that. Like maybe you could get some of the zombies abilities and make them your own ; maybe fast/jumpy/strong zoombies could spawn some pickups and by getting these pickups you'd evolve into a faster/jumpier/stronger being.
Anyway, it was fun (:
Oh and please don't make an installer next time - especially one which then goes and downloads the game. It's a nuisance having to uninstall afterwards & it gets in the way of me running my virus checker over the files before they launch. A plain executable is much more friendly. :-)
Ok, the graphics are kinda retro, but really good.
The sound... there is some, and that's enough.
The gameplay is not new (and once I buy a weapon I die), but addicting.
The installer does not work (as always with ClickOnce), but compiling the source is no problem (XNA ftw!).
The controls are crappy (left hand on the right side, Right hand on the mouse), but changing the source of this part is not problem in VS.
I always die (You've been killed by: a green square.), but that's _fun_!
At the beginning the countdown is too long, at the end it makes it hard to survive (did I say I always die?).
Really nice game!
Audio and visual feedback for core events such as being hit, hitting enemies and having different graphics for evolved weapons would help (it took me a while to even know I was being hit when I jumped over the zombies).
Also, The way it plays right now, mouse aiming is irrelevant for the gameplay and could be simplified to a 'go left to shoot left, go right to shoot right' scheme. Or, even better, to add some emerging complexity, make the zombies fall from the sky real slow, like if parachutting, so that the directional aiming system can be useful, and the player would tend to try creating 'holes' in the zombies formation before they hit the ground, so that they could them jump between them. Anyway, good entry, best of luck! ;)
