Escape Paradise by kavs
This is my first LD ever, and while the game isn't anything worthy of too much praise, I had a great experience and learnt a lot for the next one.
Lessons:
1. Study up on tech BEFORE the compo starts. I spent a good chunk of time doing FlashPunk tutorials and things just to get my game going and it wasn't until Sunday where things really pulled together.
2. Keep it simple. I over-scoped bigtime on my game here and had to hack together gameplay at the very end. There is so much I wanted to do, but just no time.
3. Learn how to make music. I can do the art, coding, and effects just fine, but I am hopeless with music. For the next one!
Software:
FlashDevelop IDE
FlashPunk library (thanks Chevy!)
Photoshop
Ogmo level editor
Send any feedback you have to @bkavs or the e-mail on my website at www.kavs.ca.
Thanks!
EDIT: Some players are getting stuck inside collision when they change zones too close to a wall or water tile. It's rare, but try and 'zone' at least half a tile away from collidables. Also, it sometimes goes funky if you change zones too much (primarily around 1-1 and 1-2). Sorry. :(

p.s: epic intro music!
I really wanted to make the spiders wander (they have a full spritesheet to support it) but I just ran out of time. If I had another 6 hours I would have made them wander, animated the player, and added some game music... but such is the nature of LD48, I suppose! :)
Thanks for the feedback and I'm glad you have a deep appreciation of my beatboxing. Untz Unts Untz. <o/
In-game music is the only way it's really lacking, IMHO. A little more challenge wouldn't hurt either but I thought having to gather food was enough, possibly perfect for LD.
I especially liked the visual theme and look of the character :).
@jedi, if you watch my timelapse you'll see me fighting with myself to do the character animations. I feel like I'll never do them justice, so I just postponed it... indefinitely. ;)
@PaulSB, I'm glad you enjoyed wandering aimlessly!
@Rich, had I known my competition would be mushroom trips, I would have upped my game! :) How can I compete with that?!
Thank you guys so much for checking it out!
The basic mechanic (collect stuff) is nice, and the size of the island is just big enough for exploration, but not too big to get lost.
Thanks! The world was supposed to be 8x8, but I'm happy I scaled down or it would have been so incredibly boring. ;) 4x4 is a good enough size for the scope of the game I ended up with.
Nicely done!
I like the mouthmade sounds. Got stuck once in a wall after changing the screen.
:-D
