What is this

You are in charge of powering the Random Number Generator inside the computer. Keep it juiced up so our friend can keep grinding those pesky legendaries.

My thoughts

My intention was to experiment with some RNG based mechanics which you could somehow affect and take advantage of, but due to a lack of planification and rule design, the RNG aspect of the mechanics was thrown out the window. The resulting game loop feels in a way repetitive, although the bullet hellish vibe can lift the gameplay to something. I will take this ludum dare as a lesson for two things I should've taken more into account: Optimization and Planification.

Having said that, I'm really happy with the humorous feel of the game and I tried to pump up the graphic quality and attention to detail compared to the previous game jam. While I don't feel like the final product is the best that I could do, I definitely think it was worth the effort. I hope you enjoy it.

How to play:

For the best experience I recommend playing the desktop version with a game controller.

Move: WASD / Arrowkeys / Joystick

Jump: Spacebar / Y Button (Controller)

I will probably upload a revised version with some bug fixes and maybe even an alternative for ALT+F4.

Probably.

Nice graphics. Nice voice acting.

I like the graphics for the computer chips and such, and the voice-lines are great. The bullet-hell elements are slightly painful (but, I also tend to stress out a lot whenever bullet hell elements appear anywhere) and there were a few bugs with the fan, but otherwise...pretty good.

Looks very nice and interesting idea. It gets repetitive as you said. Unfortunately the batteries never lasted that long that I would have to care about the "bullets" flying around.

Nice game! The mechanics have a lot of potential, but in it's current state the game is a little too easy. The bullet hell aspect is barely noticeable because the ways are so short. Movement felt really good though and the graphics look pretty nice. Good job overall!

Great graphics, great particle systems. It's quite fun and has a lot of potential.

Well done, your game is really polish for a compo entry, It is repetitive but this is normal for a game developed in 48h.

Good graphics, and I liked the voice recording, it gives a pretty funny touch to your game ! The gameplay should gain in being more diversified though, as it is it becomes quickly repetitive and dull, but I know what it is in such a short time of production. Congratulations !

I like the idea :D And the player's voice was quite amusing.

It also made me wonder about things you could do with a game where you can manipulate the RNG. Would be very interesting in an actual multiplayer setting where some people can secretly control the RNG …

The audio/voice over is very funny, graphics looks top notch too. It does become a little repetitive but the difficulty ramps up too with the bullet count to compensate. Perhaps some more variation in the players task would help. Well done!

Cool game with great graphics and some nice sounds as well. Too bad my laptop really struggled with WebGL version but it was fun none the less. Perhaps a second RNG could be placed in the right part of the screen since it's not utilized at all but hey, it's a Compo entry and I think you already managed to squeeze quite a lot into it.

Keep up the good work!

Interesting premiss, but the gameplay itself is a little simplistic / lacks depth

I liked the gameplay and being able to zip around to get the power for the RNG. That worked really well. I also liked the trailing light effects as I zipped, which added to the fun.

Nice graphics. Some reason sound was not working on WebGL for me. Running on Mac 10.12 in Safari. The jump control felt a little too sensitive. I think i prefer a standard jump height each time, maybe you could add a second jump (press the space bar twice). Had a hard time figuring out the objective and who I was playing as, and would have like to know where I was supposed to deliver the batteries. Once I figured it out, then it became a matter of wondering if I missed a battery somewhere as I kept dying quickly. All in all a nice start to a game. Like your take on the theme. Would be neat to have the game progress to different parts of the server (maybe a CPU level or a RAM level in a future update.

Fun little game. Tricky to get a high score. The graphics art style is nice, it reminds me of some of the artistic renderings in PCB layout software. Do you play Guild Wars 2 by any chance? I'm sure there are legendaries in other games too, but people seemed to like ranting about the RNG being bad in that game quite a lot for precursor drops.

@ryan I've played GW2, but not to max level. I've played WoW though and the last expansion has been a legendary shitstorm hahaha.

I don't know anything about computer science and I didn't understand the main objective or the whole purpose of the game. I still played it for about 10 minutes because I liked the voice acting and the fan (sounds like I liked very abstract things). I'm sorry I didn't get your game. Congratulations on creating something completely original, though.

Game objective wasn't obvious to me, but once I realized battery location targets I started jumping around for that high score! While bar based lose conditions can be a little underwhelming, because losing is a secondary event not something happening to you, I like the fact I could fight heat by sacrificing time/power to the fan. A nice push/pull, because the economy is tight, and so the decision to go to either power source is palpable, and often driven by the random element of the heat. I like the race against the clock tension of it, might be benefited by more discrete display, like time "chunks" in the form of seconds instead of smooth bar proportion current/max. Also the use of the green bar for battery regen and also power took me a second to learn, maybe split that visual language up (even though one is sideways, one is horizontal, could differentiate in bar style/color, or just not show regen rate). Sound was quirky! Fan was gratifying, especially with large heat groups.

I walk away proudly with a high score of 12. Thanks for sharing this fun little game!

My jam is also a goal oriented, time pressured, platformer. Tiny Dentist! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/tiny-dentist

This is exactly how I picture how my computer works when generating a random number.

The idea is fantastic and very original! I would pay for a full-polished version, no doubt.
