Idea

There is no space, at least after the city grows a bit and you have more than three carriages to manage. In Busy Streets, it’s your job to supply a city with the resources it needs to grow. Build and manage production lines for boards and bread.

Our idea was to create a small world with an increasing number of carts and other elements that block paths. The player has to use the input and output locations of the buildings clever to prevent deadlocks and find Collision free Paths. Sadly, the feature to tweak paths manually was not done in time.

For our art style we tried to recreate the look older board games, mainly the Settlers of Catan, and we are rather pleased with the outcome, given we are both no artists.

With this being our first, respectively second entry to a game jam, timing and picking the right scoop for our game was a bit of a struggle. The first playable build was done mere seconds before the time ran out. We still had a lot of fun (the kind that feels more like panic) and learned one thing or the other as well.

Control

Click on empty Fields to create Buildings. You can only Build on Meadows and every Building will cost Gold.

The two needed Production Lines are:

  1. Logger(Wood) -> Sawmill(Planks) -> City
  2. Farm(Grain) -> Mill(Flour) -> Bakery(Bread) -> City

Build

After a Building is created you can click on it to set its IO-Locations.

Input-Output.PNG

Every Item will Block the Path, so it is important to find smart Locations for Input(Green) and Output(Red).

Transport

The only Way to get Wares from A to B is the Carriage.

Carriage.PNG

Manual

Simply select one of your Carriages and right-Click on a Building. An Empty Carriage will drive to the Output-Location and Pick up the Wares or wait for Wares to Pick up. A Full Carriage will try to Deliver its Wares to the Building(Input).

Automatic

If you select a Carriage and hold Shift (or "X" if your Browser dislikes shift-Left-click) your Carriage will automatically create a Route.

Route.PNG

Deselecting and Reselecting (Sorry) the Carriage will create an Overlay that shows the Stops on this Route.

Every Click will be a Single Action! So, if you want to create an Automated Plank Production Line you have to Klick:

  1. 1 x The Logger (to collect wood)

  2. 2 x The Sawmill (to deliver the wood and collect the planks)

  3. 1 x The City (to deliver the planks)

Remember that a Carriage is NOT able to move trough other Carriages or Wares on the Road!

City

For every delivery with needed Goods (Planks and Bread) the Happiness of the City will grow. If it reaches a Threshold (100% the first Time) it will grow and curse you with more Carriages to Manage.

Have Fun!

This is a cool game idea, but it could use a tutorial to show you how to play. Even text at the beginning would be useful.

Nice entry! Even though the horses got stuck sometimes it was nice to see a 3d strategy game (even with web support!) . Maybe next time let the player focus on building stuff and let the horses walk by them selfes.

Could you post a walkthrough video or some more instructions? I've read the explanation and I'm still stumped. I'm placing things. I think I'm setting input/output but nothing changes to indicated that. Eventually happiness depletes and I run out of money. Has potential! @netguy204 me and I'll come back and take a second look.

I really liked the art style, it really feels like a board game with wooden pieces. The controls are a bit confusing however, and the carts seemed to get stuck on something. I tried really hard to get two buildings to have input/output on the same side, but I guess the game would be too easy that way :)

Yeah, I agree with Flash. It's a bit dense to play, even with your instructions on this page. It sounds like an interesting idea? Mad props for making a game in this genre for a game jam. I understand you not getting a build out until the very end lol.

I really like the concept here. I think I'm bouncing off the interface UX. My next iterations would be some quality of life things like highlighting the paths that are available between a building's supply and demand to help telegraph the goals to players. If carriages remembered a sequence of stops and could show me their path then I could make better decisions. I think these things make the game more interesting because they reveal enough that I can start to think about the implications of my choices. Right now I can't get past the first layer and the implications of my choices are surprising and hard to learn from.

This has quite some potential! The controls are somehow difficult and not really intuitive, a tutorial would really help the game and also it would be nice not to use right click to move the camera AND assign the carts, as I always accidentally move the screen then.
However, I think that this game could be really cool, with a few more features, so keep me updated if you do a later version!
Also check out our game, we also made a city builder, where you run out of space :D

Very interesting idea, I was immediately drawn to the visuals and web-based strategy - however, I think it would be much better if you could put the tutorial, even in the written form, in the game itself. Checking in between this page and game window just to make sure if I'm doing things right was a bit of a chore. Also, not a huge fan of the music - was a bit too repetitive and I'm sure it must've gotten annoying for you during the development :) On the good side - idea, visuals, building mechanics, all worked nicely!
