Quest Island by bentglasstube

[raw]
made by bentglasstube for LD 38 (COMPO)

You awake to find yourself on a small island world. Find items to help those in need.

You have to explore the island and find the three NPCs that need help. They will give you some clue about what they need. All the items are hidden in chests in caves, but the caves are dark. After you turn in the first quest, you'll get something to help you in the caves.

Not really much of a game but I wanted to spend time learning some procedural generation techniques and I succeeded there so that's fun. There are 16 different items in the game but unfortunately the only bit I got finished in time places only the items you need in each generated map. As such, some items will never appear in the game, and only a few items are in each play through.

Controls

A nice little game. I found the fishing rod, caught a fish, got a torch and then got hopelessly lost. That world surely isn't small :)
And that's the major problem actually, you're getting lost, as the world seems to be pretty huge.

Great nostalgic feel. I commend you for your procedural generation efforts; I love games with procedural generation and it is a lot to take on in a short time. If you can, list the quit button in controls as well; I had to force quit your game from the OS. Thanks for your game, it reminded me of the old-school Legend of Zelda games!

Nice world generation! But since the world is so big a minimap / arrow pointing you in the right direction would help a lot in finding the NPCs.

I felt lost more than anything, but I managed to retrieve the book and the chicken, PNJ's rewarding me torches both time :D
And I looooooved the music :)

The man is so big! But I found a sword anyway)) For me personally the music was too minimal, but I like the atmosphere of the games I was playing in my childhood

Cool game, I liked the exploring aspect. Like others have said already, the map size is pretty large. Some means of orientation would be helpful. Overall well done, especially the generation part.

I would not call that a small world but it was nice enough bumping around. Found 2 items and got 2 torches but then I believe I hit the content limit. Nice generated world.

Impressive with multiple songs in a compo game! Good work! It has the same problem as my game though... Some kind of compass or other directional hint would make it a bit easier to find things.

Dapper 80s RPG.
It's a wonder that the dev writes such beautiful 8-bit sound and retro pixel-style map design in a few days.

This was interesting, but I couldn't find any vittles for the NPCs that I found. The world also was really big, and it was hard to keep track of where things were! The music was cool though, and I liked the sound effects when you talked to things. It also was frustratingly hard to talk to the NPC - they move away so fast, and sometimes you're not facing the right way either! The game looks pretty cool, but I couldn't figure out how to progress. :(

I really liked this! I would like to be able to play in a window, and also save my progress to come back to, but overall this was really fun, nostalgic and rock-solid to play.

I wish I was better at finding stuff! You should start the game with a lasso, so you can wrap up those squirrelly NPCs and hold them in place, forcing them to tell you their problems. Yes, person in blue robes, I will find your incantations, if you just. hold. still.

Good work! I love overworlds with pretty symbols for fun environments. I could play in maps all day.

Love the artstyle! Personally the dialogue text took a little bit too long to write itself out, but I love this! :) Great job!

The world generation yielded some neat results, but I didn't find the game visually attractive. The tile contrast was so high, it hurt my eyes when moving. Also, I found the NPCs but wandered around for ages not finding the treasures. A Minimap sure would help prevent this. The music fit the game very well.

A game with more exploration than typical. I like it!

Dear diary. I'm writing this as I'm wandering around the fishing pole cave and can't find the way out. I wonder if I'll ever see the light of day again. I want to give up but I can't because this game reminds me of Zelda 2 and no matter how much people bash it, I still love it. See, even the main character looks kinda familiar...

![bagu.gif](///raw/1e4/3/z/466c.gif)

So, I made it out. Took a lot longer than I'd like to admit. Kinda dreading the idea of entering the cave next to that previous one. Someone give me breadcrumbs...

Okay, that was a lot easier. I kept a mental note of where the exit was at all times. This might be a fine point to break the 4th wall and discuss game mechanics. One in particular and that is allowing to skip/fastforward the speech texts. So many "you looked all arounds".

So some dude just thanked me for something and gave me a toch. Sweet, that would have been nice when I was stuck on that stupid dark cave. Anyways, was that the laundry dude? I don't think I found his loundry...

Another cave! Piece of cake with the torch. Seems to be empty though. Maybe I need to find something else first...

Strange feeling of deja vu. Another random person just thanked me for nothing and gave me a torch which I already had. Thanks for nothing, grey dude!

Seriously pink girl? You too...

---

So I'm officially giving up now. Dunno what grand adventures I missed. Loved and hated it at the same time. World could have been smaller since it was mostly empty anyway. Would have fit the theme better also...

As some others have mentioned, the graphics are literally eye-hurting. And after walking for what felt like ages, I only found the wizard dude, two laundry-people next to each toher and two huts. You say that there are 16 items and who knows how many people, but the game doesn't try to make the player want to look for them. Imo the map is too big for anyone to be willing to walk for an hour to find just 3 items. I think this game would've been better with a tight map that had everything within, say, a 100 block radius or less, possibly with multiple levels (dungeons, caves, etc.). Now, I don't have anything against exploration. Quite contrary. But let's see how Skyrim nailed exploration. It had a living ecosystem everywhere. I'm not saying you should make Skyrim in Ludum Dare, I'm just saying the world lacks life, i.e it doesn't have depth

This world is actually kinda big...

I explored a lot, and talked to two overworld people, found things for them, and they gave me two torches. The pink girl who is hungry was hard to talk to because she kept moving so fast, which was annoying.

It seemed like the world was mostly empty, and there wasn't enough to do, or maybe it was just not obvious enough for me to find it. I think designing the world map to make things a bit closer together and more obviously connected would have been helpful.

Overall the engine is pretty nicely done, and this could have potential if you wanted to add more to it and polish it more. Keep going!

Neat map! I included it in my Ludum Dare 38 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look :)
