Light On Light by Mathstr0fficial

[raw]
made by Mathstr0fficial for LD 39 (COMPO)

Light on Light is a simple puzzle-esque game where your flashlight is running low on power, and you have to get to the next level to keep on going. Arrow keys to play.

More levels expected; the stuff you finally see in Level 10 will play a larger role in newer levels. Some of the levels seem to troll pretty hard, but there are a couple of hints if you really think about it. :)

Good luck, have fun, thanks for playing!

Hey, I actually completed the game. Nice game :)
The music was great, the graphics were all right (even though I couldn't see most of the game beacuse of the LACK OF LIGHT). This gameplay made me exercize my memory, and god know ho bad my memory is. Congrats!

Nice job! The game is fairly polished, and has a good presentation. The game-play kinda feels like a mix between a memory matching game and an old school dungeon crawler.

My main complaint is that some of the levels are a bit too "trial and error" like, and felt more like guesswork then actual puzzles.

Other then that, It kept me interested until the end. Good work!

Good work! It could be great to have any visual representation for the - and + objects to give the player more immersion but It's a good game. Congrats 👍

@adrien-dittrick: Thanks! It was definitely supposed to test memory, and I'm glad it wasn't too aggravating!

@zee: Yeah, I was definitely worried about that during level design, and with some of them it did seem like that was the case. I really was just running short on time, but I feel most of the levels were pretty well-balanced.

@franfox: I was thinking about adding that, but with all the other stuff I was doing, I was running short on time. I did want to give them a sense of what they're stepping on though, since at first they were just green and orange squares.

This kind of light based puzzle has a lot of potential. In this case, I found it to be a huge exercise in trial and error. As the player is given such a small amount of knowledge, the puzzle is reduced to a matter of trying paths until one works. To say that this game is pure trial and error is to do it a disservice, however. There is a comprehensible design language and the mechanics are designed to allow a player to come back from poor decisions. After a certain point, I began to get a feel for how to avoid paths to nowhere. The relaxing soundtrack went a long way toward preventing the experience from being frustrating.

@piscythe: Thanks! It definitely was meant to be somewhat memory-based, hence the trial-and-error. I did try to make it somewhat comprehensible, and I'm glad it worked! As for the music, I'm really happy with how it turned out in such a tight time frame. I just went in and made it it Submission Hour, so I feel it could've been better, but for now, it's pretty good. Anyway, new music and more levels will be added post-LD, so keep checking the website!
