Shmlashing Shplanets by let-off-studios

[raw]
made by let-off-studios for LD 41 (JAM)

The goal is to smash all the planets. When you control one, collide it with a matching colour, and one of them is smashed. If you smash all of them, you earn a score bonus. Playable in nearly any web browser.

CONTROLS:

  • ARROW KEYS: Move your ship or an activated planet

  • Z KEY: Cycle the different colours of projectile. The edge of the screen will show your current colour.

  • X KEY: Shoot a bullet. When a bullet touches a matching-coloured planet, control switches to the activated planet.

Enjoy! A friend of mine described it as, "You know, it's like that one Star Trek: TNG episode where they were fighting the Borg, and to make it past their shields they had to keep shifting the frequency of the phasers." Never saw much Star Trek, but I know enough about it and this game to pretty much agree with what he said.

  • I built the game in Clickteam Fusion.
  • Background music made with Wolfram Tones: tones.wolfram.com
  • SFX made with BFXR: www.bfxr.net
  • ...Except for the end sound, which is from Centipede (Atari).

This game is great fun, it is a little confusing at first but once you get the hang of it, it is sweet. your game is very original, and a great idea. Audio is amazing as well.

Thanks for the feedback! I've updated the instructions just a little bit so that might help a new player.

I appreciate that you took the time to play Shmlashing Shplanets. It's my first LD game and I really didn't know what to expect. :)

It was interesting, music was nice, the graphics seem finished. With some UI polish and some particle effects it could be an eye candy.
Well done!

It's a nice, simple little puzzle game. It took me a bit to get the controls and goal, but I was able to clear it on my second try. Not bad for your first LD!

It makes a horrible sound when it starts; is that intentional?

Yeah, the sound is fine with me. It's a mass-correction of placement of the planets until no more of them overlap one another.

I personally go for a "trashgame" aesthetic, so these kinds of things aren't so bad in my book. What I don't have in skills, I make up for in gusto. :)

Thanks for playing, @Dovakla !

The excellent idea, in a game at once three mechanics. I Didn't expect that it will be possible control blocks

Took me a little bit, but after you play a few minutes, it's really quite fun! Biggest thing I would change is the selected color display. I found myself having to constantly move my eyes back to it when I feel it should have been a peripheral thing. That aside, it really was a lot of fun! The art also reminded me of good old Crayola Art Studio 2 back in the day xD

For some reason, the game wouldn't play properly in Chrome. The sound wouldn't load and the results screen wouldn't show up. Works fine in Firefox though. And even then, I couldn't get the arrow keys to stop controlling my scrollbar, so my view was constantly changing.

Once I got it all figured out, I found you made a pretty nice game. The music was nice and the colour-matching element gave some variety to the game. That said, I agree with Ratherjolly about the colour selector being too difficult to read at a glance. I feel it should have used more vibrant colours since they blend into the black background otherwise.

A cool simple concept. Nicely matches the theme.

@niterich, I've received a number of reports about Chrome not playing games correctly. I suspect it has something to do with the exporter (I use Clickteam Fusion), since it's not just with this game. My apologies. It's kinda beyond my control, and your perseverance is appreciated.

In any case, thanks for playing and taking the time to offer your detailed feedback!

@ratherjolly, oh man! I hadn't heard about Crayola Art Studio until you mentioned it. What a throwback, eh? I liked using so many bright, saturated colours for this one, and although I am not exactly a kid of the 90's I can see the attraction and a lot of my aesthetic emerging from that era.

The perhaps "overzealous" or maybe "enthusiastic" use of random sound-files is DEFINITELY something I want to do more of in the future. Thanks for letting me know about it, and of course thanks for taking the time out to play and comment on my game. :)
