The Internet vs. Ludum Dare by truck
You are POV, and you must launch the Ludum Dare theme at 04:00 Helsinki time! Which is some other time in other places, but no one cares about those other places.
So it's 3:55 and of course, the server is running out of power. Because everyone wants to know the theme!
You must push the 6 buttons to launch the theme, but you must also keep the power going! Oh noes!
The status board up top shows your money and the server status.
The numbers in the center show the total hits per second, the needed power, the total power available, and the production of your critters.
the 4 machines with critters in them are the wheels that are fueling the servers! Keep the critters fed.
Sadly the renegade master's awesome ill behavior screen is not in the game. yet.
Move to the doors on the sides to go to the other room with the c64 where you can make purchases and tweet.
Tweet for donations! (Sadly this part of the game is very much unfinished.)
Purchase food and carry it to the critters in the wheels.
Upgrade your critters and your servers
Keep people happy!
Make it to 4:00 Helsinki time to see the amazing clock failover bug!
controls
move pov around with the arrow keys.
move the menu with up/down.
use Z (or Y, I think pico-8 adjusts for QWERTZ and AZERTY) to purchase and drop food on the critters.
theoretically see the end concepts that could have made it into the game had I not had tons of birthday beers!
- Please do not rate the audio. Because it is basically nonexistent, and IF I have time to add some that is not completely horrid (which will take at least 3 months, estimated) then I will do so at the END of the jam.
- To the full extent of the jam.
- Yes this is silly.
- I hope people enjoy the concept, and, well, it may get fleshed out a bit more with some more time in the coming weeks. And released on c64, perhaps, at Zoo 2017.
``` a Team (" game! that is read 'team parenthasis doublequote' I was the only team member who worked on this game.
why is this editor light grey on white ```
This is uploaded in the state that it is, which is MILDLY playable. It is about ... it could use a day or two more. I.e. if this would have been worked on during all days, instead of my birthday and the beer festival that happened to also be here on my birthday, then... well.
- As it is, thereś a game which is further along than any of my other LD attempts, and weŕe sticking with it. I hope someone (hi POV) gets a kick out of it.
- I may just port this to c64. In a more 'finished' state. With, you know. The ability to actually upgrade servers (:
- an instruction sheet is sorely needed, I may add that below when I am done fixing up the hosting for the file
# I THE ENTRY
- I had a birthday in the middle of this and it involved beer, thus jam
- This is very silly.
- It basically just was the 'Obvious' game to be made. So I made it.
- I am making gameply now. GFX mostly done. SFX/Muzak: OMG BECKY LOOK AT HER BUTT
- I don't know if these are to be blog entries or not. I submit actual game SOON.
Right now, I had better get the GAME file online. source is up. It's wildly ... yeah more on that in postmortem 2.
- this edit box is STILL light grey on white. WHY?
Also you probably want to remove the `s` from `https` in the game link (errors).
The ui is quite esoteric and could use some explaining. All round, the game needed more visual/audio cues - I had no idea what I was doing for the most part. Perhaps starting the player off with just one worm/hamster would have made the initial interactions more intuitive.
Can see what you were going for though. Better luck next time! :thumbsup:
Starting off with money and needing to buy an animal - that is a good suggestion, that would definately reduce the learning curve. Of course, that would MAINLY be due to having that code in the game and working!
I will be definately adding a 'sound' cue in the next game for such things as dropping food on the critters - that would help. Essentially you do get a visual cue when it works, but it was a very last-minute-rush "ok just take 20 pixels from the center of where it is that's good enough I only have an hour" so it really is very hit and miss. When you do succeed, the 'food' in front of pov dissappears.
Unfortunately, buying critters only subtracts the money - it doesn't actually trigger an upgrade, as you should have also been able to carry a critter, not just food.
I'll detail this more in the post-mortem. And I'll ... I think I'll release a final after this coming weekend (the Assembly demoparty in Finland.)
Again, very much appreciate the feedback. Glad you liked some part of the game, means I did the right thing releasing it 'as is' and not 'hiding it until finished' (:
Sadly the server is offline, because we moved it physically. Luckily, source! So I put it online soon.
