16:9 Micro Shooter by Remi Gourrierec

[raw]
made by Remi Gourrierec for LD 42 (JAM)

A real shoot'em up in 16 x 9 pixels ! Less than the size of the smallest icon.

I was aiming the Compo but change my project saturday, so I keeped working on monday. So, no compo but still a one-man game.

Only two levels with unique patterns, then it's a loop to become stronger and see all the weapons and turrets. You can see this as a proof of concept more than a real game. I made more ennemies and patterns but no time to put everything.

CONTROLS (Keyboard QWERTY, AZERTY and Gamepad supported) :

Move : "ZQSD", "AWSD" or Gamepad D-Pad

Shoot : "Space", Button A

Change Weapon : "E", ShoulderRight

Change Turret formation : "F", ShoulderLeft

Reset : "R", Button B

Smaller scale : "-", Button X

Bigger scale : "+", Button Y

Have fun !

I'm actually really impressed with this one! You do a surprising amount graphically, considering you only have 144 pixels to work with. The health bar and text scrolling are particularly well-designed. For a game like this, and especially at this resolution, I think you could have used a little more contrast against the background --- it was sometimes a bit difficult to tell in an instant what was background and what was me or enemy. Maybe lighter values overall for background, or light characters on a dark background?

Way to take a pretty worn-out genre and make it fresh and interesting. Good work.

so amazing how you got this game to be fun in such a small space - thanks for making it

I love the direction you took the theme. Excellent use of colours and a simple but effective game play. I couldn't work out how to use the turret correctly though.

You made the low resolution work very well! I like that you have powerups and bosses.
