Bricklayer! by triplefox

[raw]
made by triplefox for Ludum Dare 45 (JAM)

Builder Bat needs help laying the bricks for his newest construction project. Can you help?

To play, run main.exe and press the "A" key to begin. Then press the arrow keys to move your paddle. Hit the flashing targets to build the wall. Your score is your time, indicated by the six numbers at top. There are five levels, and the score for each is added to make your total time.

Bricklayer is a demonstration of Galapagos, my upcoming fantasy console project, which will be on my itch.io page sometime later this month, hopefully.

Thanks for bringing this to the stream! I'll be sure to have another go with the fixed controls and check out the later levels. :)

The game got very repetitive after a while, probably because of the lack of different types of bricks and powerups that I am used to from other breakout games.

Huge respect for non-engine entry. It looks like an old game and it looks sweet. Again big respect for non-engine games/entries!

Thanks for reminding me that I'm still just as bad at these kinds of games as I always was. Seriously though, this is nicely polished and well executed. Great job!

I can't seem to move the paddle at all. :( Instructions say "Arrow Keys" but they aren't working for me...I tried mashing every other key on the keyboard to no avail...

I like the idea of this one though, so I'm definitely bookmarking to come back to later. :)

@coleslaughter three questions:

1. Was the window focused,
2. Did pressing "A" start the game,
3. Are you by chance using an unusual keyboard layout? I've been testing on a US 104 laptop with the Windows defaults. The game is testing specific scancodes, and it's possible to edit them in config.toml.

I believe the window was focused. Pressing A did indeed start the game. And nah, just the regular ol' keyboard layout for me.

Fun take on the theme, reverse brick breaker, i like it. Overall really simple, polished and a fun play.

It's like a reverse (whatever the game was called). Its fun, but if it would have more music.

I like the retro feel of the game. Though it doesn't fit the theme well.

Neat take on a breakout game. And I certainly do find the self-written engine rather interesting.
It does indeed get a bit repetitive, but I think you could combat that if you come up with another twist for later levels.

Fun game. Cool feeling. You could block the paddle from leaving the level. If i press one direction for some time, it will take that amount time to bring it back in the level. Of course I don't consider this as a problem and i won't take that in mind. Nice entry overall.

Oh, so that's where Arkanoid levels come from.

Neat concept. As much as this theme seems to promote incremental games and power-up themed ones (usually platformers), there are some cool twists on it like this one.

I like how the game didn't really have any losing conditions, but instead is just based around getting the job done as fast as possible. It makes for a less frustrating and more relaxing gameplay, which I appreciate in Jam games.

The graphics are simple, but functional, and there are some stars in the background too. Sound effects are fitting. While I initially didn't know what are these counters above for (especially the constant 0 ones), I eventually figured it out while playing 2nd level.

Pretty cool game, overall. ^^

(by the way, my final score was 104483)
