Oh No, Earth! by JudgeZedd

[raw]
made by JudgeZedd for Ludum Dare 50 (COMPO)

AUDIO BASICALLY REQUIRED, HEADPHONES RECOMMENDED

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1A4Th7ONgY

My entry for Ludum Dare 50, with the theme 'Delay the Inevitable'.

The Earth is about to be destroyed, and you have elected to stay behind to make sure that the escape shuttles can make it to the gold-plated Invincible Space Station. Rotate around the earth, shooting down asteroids in a way that's probably really familiar if you're a very old person like me.

Try not to shoot the escaping shuttles, and go for a high score!

CONTROLS:

Arrow keys/A or D - Move left/right around the Earth

Spacebar - Shoot

Down arrow/S key - Apply the brakes if you're flying too fast in one direction!

Kinda fun game, I had a hard time controlling the ship tho... don't know if that was intentional or you just being high and almighty as usual. Great game tho, liked the funny voicelines and the kinda neat graphics...

10/10 humor. I just love when I enter a game and there's a catchy joke... and this 'oh well' when you die. Love it!

Delightful game! While the gameplay is nothing new, the audio commentary elevates it a ton and makes the game a real gem. Love it!

Simple but fun game idea! I got to 8370. After a while it got a bit repetitive but having to avoid shooting the ISS added some extra challenge which was good. The narration was really funny too. The controls are sometimes a bit hard to aim precisely but that adds to the challenge, and it felt pretty intuitive to play. After a while I figured out you could hold down space to keep shooting which helped a lot. Good job :)

Excellent interpretation of this genre, specifically the ability to blow up your own ship creating a blind spot. That made it much more interesting than without that.

Managed to get 4760, not too bad :)

Great entry, not a whole lot to give feedback on. Perhaps it could've used some power ups or more variety, but the lack of those things is totally understandable during a jam

Your video is great, your voice is soothing, and most importantly...your game is AMAZING! This is a perfectly finished game with good fun and the greatest humour I've played so far!

At first I thought I could just hold space and aim behind the escape shuttle and protect the Earth forever but no, the asteroids get faster and I just couldn't rotate my ufo fast enough. It is truly "inevitable."

Nice, I liked the voice acting. It was kinda hard to coordinate at times but that's the challenge of this game. It didn't feel all that inevitable that the earth would get hit since it didn't feel like the number / speed of rocks was increasing that much over time at some point. But I accidentally shot a lot of the rockets lol.

Cool, asteroids with a twist. Pretty cool overall, but the game over is a bit... Last min perhaps? You tell me. But everything else is on point(I hate the icy movement I hate the icy movement I hate the icy movement), congrats.

Pretty neat idea, but the rough polishing and constant grating high-pitched squeak made it feel a chore to play for an extended period of time. The explosion of squares that is used for every interaction felt very rudimentary, and very unbecoming of a game with this visual style, it feels very cheap, and perhaps thrown in to cover a forgotten last angle. The different elements were constantly clashing, and it could never make a cohesive game in my eyes, what with the realistic-looking asteroids, the goddamn square explosions, the "whoops" text that looks like its taken out of a '80s comic book, and it felt pretty bad. The ice physics made most attempts at control impossible, and it boiled down to spinning and holding shoot whenever the spaceship isn't above the player. The voice acting, while at a reasonable quality, got on my nerves, and all the other sounds felt very annoying. I also couldn't seem where the theme was at, at all. It seemed to me just a standard, albeit infuriating, planet defence game. Unfortunately, rated very low.
