Flips! - Some general thoughts and level 7 solution

Flips! is a turn-based matching game by Beavl. We're really happy with our small game and we're already working on the mobile version.

Dev Tools and plans

As with almost every game we make, we've used Unity, so porting is not really an issue but we are making more content, better levels, smoother progression, different modes and different flip tiles and more!

Flips core mechanics

But the core of the game is here. Flip a tile and try to make color matches either horizontally or vertically, between level boundaries, a level boundary and a flipped card or two flipped cards. Clean the board and win the level. The more you advance, the more flips you get. And more flips before checking matches does not make things easier.

Game and Level design

Designing levels for Flips! was a blast. With our core mechanics in mind, we've developed a turn structure consisting of "layer checks" and an after-turn after the flipped tiles are unflipped (more checks there). All of these let us think of levels with not that many tiles but with really interesting possibilities.

For example...

What about a tetromino color configuration?

Look at the orange configuration in this gif.

The central orange piece is key for a 3-color horizontal match and for a 2-color vertical match. So both matches must be isolated so as the checking is made at the same time. Timing in flips is key. Look!

Well this was not a post mortem nor a normal post. But we think that you are going to enjoy our little brain teaser if you give it a try.

Cheers and congrats to all the people making games out there!

You can play the game right in your browser!)
