Ludum Dare 41: Opinions & Results
I'm happy to have created my title "Dandy Handy" for this LD41 compo. The game/concept(rather) was fun to make and showed me some strengths as well as weaknesses I have in rapid development.

Early development and idea forming was tricky with such a broad theme but I fixated on the word "incompatible". I thought to myself, "there isn't a game that's incompatible." This lead me to the belief that a games genres isn't really in-compatible with others. It is more or less the barrier in controls that go into making an experience. This LD was a challenge to create a intuitive control scheme paired with fun.
This idea became my objective to merge face paced platformer elements(SanicSPEED) alongside traditional Point & Click Puzzle/Adventure games.
I ate 3 ceasar salads with baked chicken that night and I cannot tell you how gracious my stomach reciprocated this LD!This brain fuel would help me in solidifying the player platformer logic to wrap up my Friday- Saturday morning.
After some sleep, I was ready and wired to start on the hand controls. While starting the mouse clicking I discovered I could use the hand itself as a half working platform. After slapping my primitive Unity capsule,I knew this was a mechanic to stick with.
I decided to give more functionality to the Hand by introducing puzzle elements & other hand commands.
This however was the bulk of my development & after looking back; sapped the most hours while painstakingly coding convoluted if statements.
Today, I woke up even more confused than saturday. "What does this even do?", "L2Comment." are phrases thought as I relearned quaternions & crappy naming conventions a 2nd time.
I remember the dissonance felt while looking to figure out the spaghetti of code that I had to un-twine to continue creating the game.
I notice there's 9 Hrs remaining for the compo. (Here would have been a great time to yah' know... create something not 8 Verts) Instead I decide to take the route of "perfecting" my controls. The timer went from 7 Hrs, 6Hrs, 5, 3, 1Hr in an instant.
3 Minutes before submission deadline I publish with Google Drive links ready.
Post Mortem/Conclusion/ TLDR
Allocate 2 Hrs for a Main-Menu & 1 Hr for ALL things UI.(Free Fonts, Title Screens,Credits)
Programmer Art is powerful, however, a cut-off in-order to solely focus on essential art is important. I can only imagine how cryptic my floating hand would look in a grayscale arbor.
- After an Hr of debugging a feature, I recommend to live by these words.("If it compiles, move on or face more trials.)
- Drink water & have fun with the challenge!
