The Quest for an educational game

Hi Ludum Dare community! It's been a while since my last Ludum Dare and even longer since I have made a Ludum Dare game that I was proud of.

Since my last "successful" ludum dare game, I've completed undergrad, started my first full time developer job, published my first conference paper, and got to be help design and develop a real educational game with real life graduate students and did a real life study with real data that we analyzed and really presented about.

Looking back (and looking forward) I feel like my older games were kinda ... bad. I don't know how to make an open source project sustainable and I lost drive for working on it, so the educational game also kinda pittered out once we not longer could devote all our time to it. While I have gained experience in the world of both development and academic stuff, none of it matters unless I actually sit down and MAKE something useful.

After being exposed to the fancy academic world with conference names like ""FDG"", ""ICCE"", and ""SIGCSE"" and statistics about the state of CS education in United States, I would like to approach this Ludum Dare with the goal of making an educational game that could be used as a resource in learning something with Math or CS.

I want academia to be somewhere in my future, and I usually learn the most in the shortest amount of time doing game jams like Ludum Dare - so why not use this Ludum Dare to work on an educational game? My goals for myself include:

  1. Have the game be a potential resource to teach SOMETHING with CS/Math
  2. Have at least 1 paper I can point to to show the design as SOME basis in theory
  3. The game should be fun (or at least not-dreadful) to play

I look forward to using this weekend to learn more about educational/serious gaming!

TLDR; I'm in
