I have the following question: unfortunately I used Wingdings as enemy graphics, and those are not allowed in the rules. I didn’t know about that, but that also means that I disqualified myself.

Question: is it still ok to change the graphics now? I don’t want to be a spoilsport, so I have these to offer, intentionally making them worse to indicate that

You’ve made the new graphics super bad so people will just say to stick with the old ones 😛 well, i dont know what the rules are on that; this is my first LD. But if i find out i’ll be sure to let you know.

I guess technically that wasn’t allowed but I don’t really see a big problem here. I think the rule is there to avoid some real problems with fonts that contain very detailed graphics. Anyway that’s just my opinion.

Making the graphics worse was really intentional. Mea culpa, mea culpa, and if I would make the graphics better, that would be even worse than having the wingdings :).

My vote: definitely keep your entry in, and it doesn’t bother me if you stick with the old graphics.

Oh, by the way, yes, there’s a bit on the wiki saying roguelikes are allowed, but I think that’s inconsistent with the idea of not using “found art” in font form. Better to broaden the scope a bit. In any case, you still can’t use public-domain fonts (since they would count as public-domain art) which aren’t on the target system already, so I think it’s not too exploitable to allow wingdings.

For me it’s ok to change the gfx the way YOU like 8)

Dude, I didn’t know it’s not allowed to use any font from the OS. I mean… it’s a font. You can’t expect to draw a font in 48 hours manually.

Meh. Well im not claiming to have done it within the 48hours (although it DID only take about 10 mins to do the characters i used while i was making the font) but i’m just saying no-one can say i didnt make my own font 😀

KungPhoo: the rules call out the fonts with graphics in them specifically,

“Fonts are allowed. You’re free to use any font you’re legally entitled to. Fonts are meant for text output, not as base for graphics (so you can’t get around the ‘no clipart’ part by using windings/webdings/dingbats and whatnot). ”

So it’s not that all fonts from the OS are disallowed.

I wouldn’t worry about it, and I’d think changing it now is worse than leaving it. But don’t use wingdings in the future! Seems like a pretty minor thing since wingdings isn’t exactly high art, not much better than the classic roguelike of just using letters.

I personally think it’s inconsistent to disallow public-domain clipart and allow public-domain fonts, but *shrug* if it works for people, it’s cool. I actually was quite careful to only use fonts from the OS for that reason.
