Dwarven inspiration and first game celebration

blog1.gif

Being the artist of the Lemmings-like game Dwammings, I am ecstatic about the positive response of the sprites I created for our game. Seeing that folks out there are finding these little dwarves I created as charming as I did when I got the first one walking, it makes me happy. When the team decided to take to dwarven angle of this jam's theme, I instantly started thinking of the line of dwarves heading into their mines. With their miner caps on and bulbous noses sticking out beneath them, marching happily to get to work. The finished design ended up resembled having a Brian Froud styling, an artist that I turn to for inspiration for mythical fae creatures like gnomes and faeries.

Even their actions I created is paced similar to Lemmings I played when I was younger. (It was actually one of the first DOS games I played on the family PC.) They had that carefree pace that I could just watch while others wonder around, often to their demise. A pace that I was glad to care over in my animation.

If you haven't had a chance to see these dwarves move first hand, I recommend giving our game Dwammings a play. Click here to head to the game page.

And with now that 50 plus folks have rated our game (and 250 individuals viewed the game on itch.io), I like to admit that this has been my first game that I've been part of creating. Every comment and critique I've been reading feels me with pride that even a guy in his mid 30's can still give his passion a chance. With the feedback and experience from this past week has made me realize that what game I can create can be enjoyed by other. So, for every one leaving a message for the game creators out there, you are helping inspiring individuals to continue creating games. Keep leaving feedback on every game you play (not just ours), cause no matter how simple it may be, we appreciate ever bit of it.

Burst Vein final bugfix changelog!

GameLogo.png - Player uphill slope limit adjusted to prevent getting stuck on terrain - Keys now rotate on the correct axis and speed when picking up - Night sky light now correctly displaying, outside was previously pitch black - Torches no longer broken and flashing when player is close - Fire particle now correctly scales by distance. No more giant flares! - Goblin skeletons now have the correct material - Major mouselook bugs fixed - should now run much cleaner in WebGL - Easter egg notes were being regarded as gameplay-important so are now properly hidden - Password notes have been moved to be more obvious as some players were struggling to find them - One additional note hidden to support with onboarding an obscure puzzle element - "Sotaroni" easter egg text replaced with something a bit less inside jokey. Didn't expect so many people to find it!

We're going to be considering this the definitive version now, as through watching multiple streamers playing the game and rigorously playtesting ourselves, we believe every major bug and positioning issue has now been fixed. Thank you to everybody who gave us such detailed feedback and bug reports; we hope you enjoy playing the definitive version of Burst Vein for the remainder of LD48!

Deep Mine Intro GIF

I'm having wayyy too much fun with this engine so I went ahead and made a little intro title screen that is 1000x better than the plain text I have in the original game!

Happy gaming, everyone!

I uploaded Dark Dive v2 of my game

A lot of people were unhappy with a key binding so I fixed it along with slowing down the rate at which you lose 0xygen and energy. It was too hard and nobody was completing the game (i think).

Don't worry. The original ludum upload submitted before the deadline is still there if you want to try that and rate me based on that first but if you want to try my fix later and let me know if it's better, feel free to try that one too

How about a relaxing game with a nostalgic atmosphere?? Try The Deepest Dungeon!

Participate at the greatest trivia game at the abyss!

VOTOV GIF 10

What would an omniscient creature of the abyss do with all that knowledge? Well, host a trivia game, of course! Join the challenge of the Thing Of The Void (or Thothev for short) in Vast Trivia Of The Void and go deep into the abyss to win big! 👾

Put your knowledge of several topics to the test! Sports, history, science, anime, videogames and more! But since Thothev thought that just knowing wasn’t fun enough, move around in his playground, collecting cards and increasing your combo! Cash out or go deeper, for higher rewards but possibly higher risks! Monetary, of course!

Do you have what it takes to make it big? Will you come out as a winner in the biggest game show from the darkest pits of the universe?

VOTOV GIF 2

Vast Trivia Of The Void is our brand new entry from Whales And Games for this Ludum Dare! Those were three hectic days of game development, and we’re only posting about it now because we just finished the Web and Android ports! And all of that was right after our release of Townseek from last week! We may be super tired, but that’s not stopping us from hyping it around!

You can download the game, play it on the web or, as surprise, play it on your android mobile devices over on our entry page!

VTOTV GIF 4

In addition to our own questions, we’re also experimenting with allowing for users to make their own questions! For that, we’ve made the User Questions Manual with instructions of how anyone can make their own question packs! Neat!

Joining us for audio this time around was @zachary-blystone (Twitter) who has previously joined us while making Super Sellout and Petty Puny Planet, and his synth music fit our trivia game show like a glove! 👏

We’ll be taking the next few days off from any IDEs, engines and art programs to recover from all this jamming and play some of the jam’s games, so make sure to link us yours over in the comments! You can also come hang out with us over at our Discord for some casual after-jam talk.

Enjoy Thothev's crazy game show, and enjoy deepening your transdimensional trivia knowledge! 🌌

My favorite games so far (plus obligatory self promotion)

This post started as a shameless self promotion, but quickly grew into a list of my favorite games so far. Let's get the self promotion out of the way first, shall we?

*AHEM*

Tired of playing games that actually require you to THINK? Fear no more! Sploosh: A Guinea Pig Saga is a chill adventure where your only goal is to explore.

Features: - Hand drawn!!! - Super big open world. Like, really big. - (Allegedly) cute animals like guinea pigs, llamas, crocodiles, and jellyfish - Did I mention jellyfish?

Screenshot4.png

Here's the link https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/48/sploosh-a-guinea-pig-saga

Whew! That's enough shameless self promotion for a long while. Let's balance it out with some shameless promotion of other people! (opinions incoming, brace yourself)

  • Most inventive mechanic (so far): Dungeon Painter - Reveal the level as you go by shooting paint! (https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/48/dungeon-painter)

  • Best art and theming (so far): Yermak Super cool papery art style paired with an awesome mood. The game itself reminds me of Oregon Trail! (https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/48/yermak)

  • Trippiest Game: Dark Waters This game is pretty relaxed, but their crazy take on diving and just the 3rd dimension in general was enough to make me go 'whoa' (https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/48/dark-waters)

  • Best puzzle game: Deep Roots - Making a puzzle game for a game jam is hard, and this is a cool take. Control three different roots trying to get to water hidden deep within the soil. This game is super cool. (https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/48/deep-roots)

What have been your favorite games so far? Link them below and you can have a free self-promotion!

Send me some HTML 5 games

Hey all I'm playing some more HTML 5 games, maybe the last batch!! If you haven't send me your links in previous post send them here :D , I have like 1 hour or so .. Thank you!!
