PSA: Do not heart comments on other people's games

Edit: Before anything, I want to say my game has 20 ratings now, this is no longer a problem affecting me this jam. This post is about the more general problem, and why you shouldn't heart certain comments at the moment. Please rate other people's games who are in the danger zone.

As has been discussed, when you heart comments on other people's games, it lowers the smart score of that person.

This can be extremely devastating. I have rated 23 games and have 27 karma, but because of (what is effectively) a single comment on my game that has amassed 21 additional karma, my smart score is being drastically deflated, making it shockingly difficult to reach 20 ratings:

metricsem27/emkarma.png

I am hoping that this formula will be changed by the next Ludum Dare, but in the meantime, please avoid hearting comments unless they are on your own game. One of my own comments on somebody's game has amassed 5 hearts, and while that is not nearly as devastating, I still feel bad about it, knowing how much impact it can have.

(To be clear: hearting comments on your own game does not hurt your smart score. You should still heart comments people leave on your game!)

Finally managed to sit down and glue together all video material of work-in-progress Void Timeline we gathered during the jam. Enjoy!

I was surprised as to how easy the recording part ended up being. Turns out Unity offers a recoder package, and it seems to work pretty well, for what we used it for at least.

Aside from a manually-controlled recorder window, the package includes scripting samples. You can use those to set up your own recording behaviour from code. Together with InitializeOnLoadAttribute and playModeStateChanged event - recording can be automatically triggered every time you enter play mode.

I was able to record to an MP4 format in a high(-ish) quality basically at all times, without performance issues (though capped at 60 fps). The original video came out better than the youtube version, which really hit the sped-up FXes with compression artifacts.

Here's the best part though - I could work normally in the editor, with the game relegated to its usual, non-maximized viewport - while still recording at the target resolution of 1080p! This alone made the whole effort worthwhile to me.

In general I can recommend looking into this package, if you're capturing footage of your game for any purpose.

PS Apply CursorMode.ForceSoftware while recording in the editor, if you want the cursor to be registered as well.

4 more ratings!

Final days of the curse

wereburgershowcase_2.gif

With only a few days remaining this jam, time has almost run out for this poor farmer... And my transformation from human to burger is nearly complete. It's been an honor serving with you all. If I do fully transform into a burger, please enjoy me with a side of curly fries and a large soda. Thank you.

RandoBots supports up to 4 robots now!

In this post jam version of RandoBots, we added an option to compete with either 2 or 4 robots in the game field (jam version only had 2).

Two of the players are either humans or bots, the other two are always bots (though we can add human inputs for these two, if anyone wants, with gamepads or so...).

Enjoy!

Only 4 days left! :3

Only four days til' results day ()! Thankfully, I've been able to pass the 20 ratings threshold (by a lot), but if you'd like to give my game some last minute feedback I'd really appreciate it! Thank you in advance to anyone who tries it, it helps a lot!

I typically don't get very much feedback on my games, so I love coming back to my computer to see peoples opinions on it! >:D

Changes - My first Ludum Dare game

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/51/changes

I was very happy to get it, I can't say complete it completely, but come pretty close to it, my first game for Ludum Dare. I've been working alone, but I ended up getting into the Extra category, which gave me some extra time. Even so, I haven't been able to make the song yet, although I have plans to add it. I usually draw most of the graphics on paper and then scan, and most of the graphics were taken from some other projects I have. The final look pleased me, you can check it out below:

Captura de tela.jpg

I have a hard time with themes, but this time I imagined something that alternated between 10 seconds of danger and 10 seconds of calm. The game doesn't have an end yet, but it does have a difficulty progression, and a lot of randomness in where the traps appear. You are an insect that is flying and you have to manage your energy all the time, because flying takes energy. If you run out of energy you will fall to your death. Fortunately you can collect the blue energies and recover your health, but only when the screen is not red. There are 10 seconds of red screen, and 10 seconds of non-red screen, where the extra energies appear. You have to manage it. I ended up adding a pause menu, which took a considerable amount of time, but I don't know if that was really necessary. I always waste time with menus, which is why I realize that most jam games don't have a menu. I need to consider this in the future. I don't have ratings or feedback, and part of that is because I haven't rated much myself, although I'm taking the day from now on to do so. Help me and give me some feedback please. Thanks

Here is HOW I've made a GAME using my own Dream GAME ENGINE

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWYvld-CkmY

This jam was a different one for me: I've made my game using my own 3D game engine, made from scratch! If you're interested to see how I've made it, you can watch this video because I've shared every detail on it!

Did you know?

I have seen a lot of games with rating data looking like this V1.png

But did you know that you actually also can get one of those V symbols next to the 'Rating given'. I think it is looking great, and maybe you also can get one of those.

Here is a link to a place, that might help you to get one of those cool V symbols https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/51/games/danger/all.

Fittings for catering facilities

Guys, if you want to buy yourself some nice shopping bags, then please make sure that they are eco-friendly and that they are really beautiful. The masses of customers will remember your store when they come to shop. This is all done very quickly, and I want to tell you that there is one good store where you can order your own shopping bags for your business. I recommend that you go to this site https://mcdonaldpaper.com/safepro-10712-10x7x12-inch-kraft-paper-shopping-bag-with-handles-250-cs/ , because that is where you will find that perfect store.

A few ratings short!

Hey everyone, I'm a few ratings short on my game '10 Seconds or Less'. Would appreciate anyone who could give it a play and a rate to help me get to 20 ratings.

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/51/10-seconds-or-less

Changed category from Compo (unfinished) to EXTRA

rect896.png

I've just discovered that it is possible to change my entry category to Extra until the end of the rating period.

I was very frustrated with my initial unfinished Compo entry. Finally, I've used some time of the last weekends and continued the development.

Features of the extra version : - Added animations (Idle, Move, Attack, Hurt, Die) - Reworked combat system (attack, defense, bonus, malus …) - Added icons to display HP, defense, attack … - Added minimalist sounds - Added Help screen LD51Extra3.jpg https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/51/timed-turn-based-strategy-game

Feel free to test and comment this new version. I will now take time to review a maximum of others entries.

Doubt...

Would it be interesting to have an "official fake" profile with the additional ability to know who has given ranking to filter who passes by giving votes without testing the game?

That is, submitting an empty game, deleting comments to not alarm those who cheat in voting and, what might be even more interesting, knowing how much the person gave in each voting thread... To know how harmful to the grade these fakes can be...

The idea could be to ban these profiles or even invalidate their votes (the bad thing is someone getting twenty votes and leaving the ranked game because of such removals).
