Second attempt

I’ve got it, my new idea to replace the impossible one.

I’m not sure if I should admit this, but it came to me during… an intimate moment. Since my special person is home this weekend I’ve decided to make something the two of us can play together.

progress02

Not much to look at yet. When it’s done, I hope to have created a roguey/gauntletty thing in which one player crafts the next dungeon level cavern while the other player hacks their way through the previous one. I’ve just decided to make it top-down rather than a platformer, which might be less of an experience than I originally imagined but it’ll let me get a lot more content done inside the time limit.

I guess I’ll miss out on votes for making something that needs three hands to play, but this is something I’ve wanted to try out for a while. When I was a kid we’d turn anything into an epic role-playing adventure; graph paper, Chinese checkers, Cluedo… I’m not sure if two people can get the same spontaneous story-creating effect with a video game that requires so much less imagination to visualise but I think it’s an interesting idea.

Cake Story?

Well, they were meant to be rock/dirt textures, but they look far more like chocolate brownies! (mmm… chocolate… need more snacks!)

cavern_shot01

Making progress… As usual, I’m putting the tech before the gameplay… I’ve not go a game design beyond having my usual blob character jumping around it and avoiding the lava…  Now do I put a physics engine in it? Or keep it simple and spend the time on visuals…

moar food

Apparently I eat a lot…

Some Progress…

I wasted hour and a half to think of an idea… then started to draw the graphics =]

I had used my yablet to make the platforms graphics 😀

the story line is simple Skin is angry about all those who think his colors are gay, so he decides to put some joker makeup and go for a revenge like only he knows how =]

here’s a screenshot of Akin jumping and slaping the air =D

humdedum.

So, I didn’t really have time this weekend. Too bad, the theme was great; I had some nice ideas I’d like to implement, and might yet. So, all I’m leaving you guys is the silly joke. =)

Instead of trying to do something and getting frustrated, I spent time with my wife and baby.

Judging from the screenshots, this LD seems to be a real success. I won’t be around much tomorrow (either), so good luck to everyone and make some great games!

Some kind of idea

I didnt take a picture of my sandwiches, so instead I grabbed this off google.

OK, egg sandwiches consumed, I now have an idea that actually is a game. Maybe.

You, archaeologist Ted Stuart (because archaeologists are always action heroes, for some reason) have wandered aimlessly into a cave that has laid undisturbed for millennia. Well, or so you think. It’s actually been disturbed rather frequently by all the dinosaurs living down there.

Living dinosaurs would make your job a waste of time, and so to preserve the livelihood of archaeologists everywhere, you seek to destroy them all! However, your puny gun is no match for their unusually tough skin! Your only hope is that you can shoot down loose rocks from the ceiling to bonk the dinosaurs on the head with. Only then can you remain safely employed in these harsh economic times.

So, yeah, lots of waffle to describe a game of very limited gameplay! I can think of other uses for dropped rocks, but that’ll depend on how much time I have after.

Caverns

I’ll participate in this ludum dare with a simple exploration game. I don’t usually do this but I got an idea that could be implemented in some hours so I’ll give it a go.

It’s about life in a cavern, that’s about the most I can disclose right now 😀

Icy caves

ld15-7

My caves are no longer stereotypically brown! They are now stereotypically blue! I’m going for the whole icy cold cave thing I think. :)   Just been working on collectable items which have a nice sound effect thanks to SFXR! It feels almost like gameplay!

Just woke up, so now it’s time to get making away at My Little Cavern. This is the start for the art that I did last night. I need to do more, but I think it’s a good start. No game working yet, but it should be soon.

Ready to start!

I woke up at 5.00 am to see what the theme was and then went back to bed. This morning/afternoon I played with a string quartet in a little concert for somebody’s 90th birthday. Now I’m back again and it’s time to get started.

Not sure what I’ll make yet, but I’m thinking about doing a platform game using Physaxe. I’ve never used it before, so I’ll start with experimenting a little.

Here is some food I had:

Voronoi sprite test

Ok, first tech tests — here’s some “voronoi sprites” in action hoping to resemble some rocky cavern structure.

genre blending

Out of sequence photos:

My original plan, written on a bus:

bus plan

My dinner:

green eggs

I need some vegetables.

I also need a way to make cave flyer not like every other cave flyer. is genre-blending the answer? Let’s brainstorm.

  • cave flyer RPG
  • cave flyer Roguelike
  • cave flyer Legend-of-Zelda exploring the wilderness
  • cave flyer + get out of your ship and it’s a platform game
  • cave flyer + base builder\tower defence\support a city and bring it supplies
  • cave flyer + trading game (buy low sell high)
  • cave flyer taxi (get from here to there, quick)
  • cave flier + Meritous (I enjoy meritous)

The trick is choosing something that is original but won’t take too long to code.

Player Character

I’ve spent a bit too much time fiddling with the level editor and changing the cave background tile, but here’s what the player character’s going to look like:

robotrobot

Hopefully now I can get on with the business of coding the game itself…

saturday morning sketches: horror caves?

hi, everyone!

nice to have a compo again!
it’s my second ld… and i hope get something done this weekend. most likely in flash/as3 again…

#gallery-1 { margin: auto; } #gallery-1 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-1 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-1 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */ cavern_00a cave_lake_00a cavern_02a
cavern_01 cavern_03a caveguy_00a
evilones_00a geist_00a huh_door_00a

i was pondering about the theme after getting up…
no good ideas yet :/

but i’m moving over to test a pseudo 3d cave race technique now. 2d sprites, scaling, maybe some color adjustments for more depth… steering, either on 3 different tracks, or free in horizontal direction. with constant speed, probably. then… collisions. enemys? jumping + shooting? huh… i don’t even know how to do pseudo 3d zooming in flash, and how i’m gonna layout the levels… 😉

i’ll keep it simple as possible today, till it’s getting playable.

Fueled by the breakfast of champs

And by breakfast of champs, I mean my turkey and cheddar egg sandwich, courtesy of Eistein’s Bagels:

Breakfast, half consumed

Breakfast, half consumed

Now it’s off to mad coding.  In the next hours hope to have everything in place so that I can crank out simple scenes/levels.  By mid afternoon I should have some preliminary screen shots, and towards the end of the day, have a fair amount of gameplay (for suitable definitions of “end of the day”).

Progress

I now have the complete gameplay, or so it seems. I’m adding bad guys and in order to make them move, I coded A*:

A*

Not too fancy yet, and I’m not sure it’s fun. A lot of balancing shall be done, and I think I’ll have the time, for once.

Food and mushrooms

ld 001

Mm-m, smoked meat pizza and smoked salmon pizza. With shrimps.

Also, I found some MUSHROOMS while on a walk with my dog!

Cake failure, breakfast and an idea

First of all, my cake failed:

IMG_0530

The turning plate thing in our oven is broken so I placed the cake mold on an oven-safe pie thing so it would turn, however the mold was too flexible and the batter spilled.

Next, breakfast (3pm is a perfectly acceptable time to have breakfast it seems):

IMG_0531

I finally had an idea for my game :) . It’s not terribly original but oh well. Now I just need to make it. 😛

I also decided to reuse some collision code from a previous entry of mine. I feel that since you’re allowed to get the same functionality in a library it should be ok.

I cry for your cake. Good luck with the game though – at least if it’s not too original, you know it can work and you can focus your efforts on polishing the implementation?
