Generation of a Maze with Conway's Game of Life
Using Conway’s Game of Life rules, altered to 1,2,3,4,5 neighbors equalling a cell surviving, 3 equalling a birthed cell, and others equalling a dead cell.Well I just got started, hit up the more to see what I have running in unity

Indeed it does, for the compo’s duration anyways. This is a post mainly to test its blog post notifications.

This is my first shot at the sprites for my game. This is just to show you the baseline I’m working from.
This is a concept of the game itself. I’m planning on some detailed, cute sprites, but I reckon if I worry about that later on and just get working, fun times.
Set in the Nuke-proof bunker where humanity persists following a terrying Nukular Holocaust, you’re the official in charge of managing dig operations. The idea is to mine out farms and additional living space while the surface cools off. Just, you know, make sure you don’t encounter any amorphous carnivores who’ll do everything they can to ingest every last scrap of humanity. That would be terrible.
Control is like dungeon keeper: you direct your minions, you don’t get to pick which one does what. You’ll mark areas out for mining, then dudes will come along and do that. You’ll mark areas for guarding, or whatever, and Marine types will… anyway. It’ll look like lemmings: minions mill around on a 2d plane and react predictably to events. This is all conjecture until I can get the thing playable. Might find my old copy of fruityloops and knock up an mp3, but time is always short. To arms!
So I came up with a basic idea of a game… you are a white blood cell in *caverns* of blood vessels. Viruses and bacteria attach the red blood cells which are your life.
I was thinking that maybe i would give it a kind of educational bend and to kill a baddie you have to answer a q right, but I may not due to time.
Tomorrow I am gonna start with adding collision control and a more detailed map. For now the graphics kinda suck but I will make them better at the end when everything is working right.

So, I have a start. But that’s about it. I have a map, nothing moves on it though. And now I need to sleep. Goodnight.
I just got up. After like 4 hours of sleep.
Caverns this time… Ok I’ll see what I can do
Ideas I probably won’t use #53: a colossal cave adventure clone.
Anyway, since everybody else is, I’ll list my tools:
Here is a first sketch of my game-idea: “Let’s go cave-burrowing” or “Eeat or die” (haven’t decided).
You fly/flap around, puke explosive stuff and eat (or dies).
Breakfast a glass of milk and candy-leftovers from yesterday…

and finally a photo of my desk
N ow I’m gonna setup chronolapse for timelapse videos and then code like a monkey
I’ve been brainstorming an idea I probably will not have enough time to finish. Its simple, its not incredibly hard to implement on the GBA, and it might look/feel cool enough to be a fun little game to try.

The basic idea is similar to Adam’s running flixel flash game, and you’re constantly running out of energy so you need to make sure you jump over the stalagmites. This isn’t super revolutionary but considering how little time I think I will actually have, getting something together at all will be a miracle, especially on the gba!

Making breakfast is no reason to leave #ludumdare! :3
Still thinking about what sort of game to make. I’m determined to make this one count!
Ok, so the theme definitely threw me. I was expecting Burrowing to win (and kind of hoped it would, because I was going to subvert it as a theme). But seeing as we’re doing caverns, I’ve had to rethink quickly.
A while back, I saw a post by Chris Delay of introversion talking about thier game subversion and I remember him using Doom based level content as test material and it sounded like a fun thing to do. Given that Doom is the ultimate “cavern” shooter to me. I figure, first step is to get a doom file format working. So my plan is to make a Doom->Obj converter. From there, I’m going to load the .Obj in 3ds max and convert it to collada. Bake some stupid texturing into it. Bake some stupid lighting into it. Then concentrate on figuring out some combat based gameplay.
Tools I’ll be using:
I’m not sure I’ll get everything done, but I guess having some fun content to play around with is a good start. I guess just using Horde3D’s parallax offset shader thingumy is going to make it look half decent at least. Maybe I should add quake support too. Bleh!
I managed to get past that last obstacle only to run in to a brick wall.
The evidently horrible way Construct handles updating the collision mask of canvasses not only slows the game to a jerkfest, but overheated my machine to the point of crashing.
I want to take a screenshot to show how far I got but I’m afraid it’ll catch fire.
I’m pretty disappointed because I thought this was going to be an opportunity to try out an idea I’ve been sitting on for a while. Right now I’m deciding whether I should turn what I’ve done so far into less interesting action game or try to come up with something new.
Cavern, really?
Just woke up, at my friend’s place (I’m crashing there). Dunno if the social requirements of staying at someone’s place, as well as coming back from 3 months away from friends will allow me to compete.
Plus, caverns, seriously?
l’ll still try to make photos. Just to pollute the compo blog.
*Evil grin*

The game looks boring in the screenshot because of all the darkness, so I’ll explain:
-The player sprite minds its own business rather than rotate towards the cursor now.
-If it’s not obvious: You must shine a flashlight to find where the cave walls are.
-The sparkles (that are animated, but you can’t see that here) indicate where the coins are. Of course getting to them isn’t as easy as spotting them.
-The flashlight graphic you see here is the cursor, not an item you can pick up.
Going to bed now. G’night for now.
Soo. Breakfast. I kinda feel sick after that party yesterday, so its only toast.
Good thing with waking up a few hours after the theme announcement: There is already some insperation! Too bad its caverns, I had NO idea for this one…
Guess I am in anyways.
I will be using Gosu and C++, and want to experiment with some opengl shaders, if I ever come this far, that is. Sound will be mainly sfxr, and no music I guess.
Oh! I need an avater… Ohwell! Time to lurk in the irc channel and steal some ideas 😉

Okay, heading to bed. I’ve got a small handful of code (208 lines of ruby), and I’ve drawn my first graphic of the compo. Behold: dirt.png!
