LD22 December 16–19, 2011

More progress

I now have more ideas and have added a basic spotlight to hide from. heres what i’ve got so far:dl.dropbox.com/u/27031094/Pixel Phased.html i will ad more obvious ways to get to the ship later. go down untill you get to the skeleton, go left and down a bit. thats pretty much it for now.

Nearing Completion

Alright, I have all weapons, and 6 different enemies (1 of them is ultra rare)

now I just need to randomly distribute the weapons around the map.

24Hours

Turning in for the night.
Hopefully after a sleep I’ll have the inspiration I need to turn what I have into something resembling a game :S

Day 1: Island screenshot

Quick update…I’m succumbing to the temptation to spend the weekend tarting up a non-game. Need gameplay, stat!

That said, I have prepared a handful of tools to help me get gameplay content in faster tomorrow, and I’m WAY ahead compared to my LD21 effort, “Fireflies”.

LD22 Work in progress

You may notice the character looks a bit like the one in Fireflies. That’s because blobby cartoon figures are really quick to model. He’s a bit more egg-shaped than the last one though.

Looking great!

Breakfast Time

Republished from here.

After quite a good sleep, I got some work done over the past one and a half hours. I finished all the functionality of the main screen, where half of the gameplay happens. I shall go get some breakfast now and then come back. Take a screenshot though.

24 hour progress report

The last 24 hours have been productive, challenging, and a whole lot of fun. I figured I’d take a quick break from beating my face against the keyboard to show some work in progress!

I’m really proud of that lighting effect. :)

I’m real new at this and do not program – i have a chess game idea – what do i have to do to play?

This is harder than I thought…

It’s my first Ludum Dare and already 1 day has passed… feeling pretty pessimistic right now.

The theme “Alone” doesn’t do a great job of inspiring ideas, so instead I was inspired by the “Kittens” theme that lost.

The basic premise is that you have been trapped somewhere by some evil thing, and you want to escape. Also there are kittens that you can pick up and throw to solve puzzles (eg press switches) to move forward. It’s fine because cats always land on their feet…

So because it seems to involve physics I decided to try learning Box2D while I was at it. Probably not the best idea.. learning a new engine for a 48 hour contest.. due to that I really don’t have much done. I have the character movements (WAD keys) done, and he can collect coins and go into doors (S key) and there’s some kind of message box that I can use to explain the story in dialogue-style (space key). But, as anyone can tell, no cats, no puzzles, and really, no game. And also no art and no music….

I’m not sure how much I can get done by the end, but I’m quite interested in finishing this, since I’m not planning to make it a long game with 40 levels or anything. A short but interesting 4-5 levels + a boss fight that I have in mind. See it seems like I’ve given up already and am thinking about afterwards :\

Time to take a short break and eat something. Gotta cheer up, me. I can do it!

I’ve been having similar issues. I spent all day implementing the movement and getting comfortable using Fisica/JBox2D. I figure though, at least I’m making something and learning! At the end, at the very least I’ll have an interesting prototype even if it’s not a great game. Plus, you can always work on it more after the contest if you want to.

A day has passed

Featured in screenshot:

  • worm and flying enemy
  • pickups for scoring
  • highscore
  • health and ammo pickups

Not featured:

  • Highscore
  • Jumping walking enemy

Tomorrow is a time for balancing, highscore saving and adding colors to the graphics

Work has been done, ish

we had a change of heart and decided to choose a steampunky art style, so my dare buddy is going through and changing the art.. i hope to have everything in the engine done soon so level design can begin. I just need to get the HUD done, a working inventory system with both ranged and melle weapons. I still don’t understand why im doing my biggest project yet in ludum dare. i must be high or something

Hopefully we’ll have a demo up tomorrow aswell, but no promises. I personally think that we will finsh with 6 hours to spare, but you never know

Day 2

Day 2 begins, with just over 23 hours to go. With a bit of luck (and perhaps some red bull), I will be awake from now until the submission deadline. I’m definitely gonna have to pick up the pace though, and start cutting a bunch of things from the todo list to make it more realistic :)

Day One – Done

Still got a few points on my TODO-List, but right now, it’s bedtime for me. Here’s the progress so far

Yep, my avatar now got a pixeled version :)

Update: The first level is complete!

The design was already set in stone at the 12h mark, then I slept for some hours and now I came back to make the layout and programming of the level. The art stuff will come when I have all levels done.

I have a good feeling for this competition :)

cool! It could be just because I have been playing a lot of it lately, but it kinda reminds me of Portal :)

Actually it also reminded me of that. In fact I was going after the same structure of levels and ambient as Portal. Now the game is shaping up to be different, but still cool.

End of my first day – not good

It’s not been a good one to be honest. Doing prep and generally avoiding the elephant in the room while I roam youtube for project 4 awesome. I didn’t know what to do with the theme. My prep is far from over but it looks like I have a few more things sorted.

– Pixen for art
– TextWrangler for html/js
– Decided to go for either craftyjs or roll my own hobbled together mess if what I settle on is super basic
– I have an idea. I like it even if it doesn’t feel super fresh. Meek Pixel (tentative title)

Not really sure what I want in the game right now but I know tomorrow I’ll be scripting like mad and keeping everything I make to claw something playable together.

Best wishes!

Suese Concedes!

Suese

This Suese concedes. Too many things went wrong related and un-related to the competition.
Sad Face :(

Progress is sooo slow

Dont you just hate scope creep…

If I have another all nighter I should be ok, im currently going off of 2 hours sleep as it is :D.

Things that are done:
Most of the art,

Finished a 3 Hour Game!

Well I finished my entry, made it in three hours! It’s a game made by that guy (me) that made that game you (you) never played. Go over and give it a go!

Enjoy

Update

Yeah, I’ve been lazy. I’m not digging the theme that much either. None the less, here’s a screenshot of a dungeon generator I’ve worked on. It’s just unity with a script creating instances of my prefabs.

I guess the game’s going to be about roaming in a dungeon, all alone. So a roguelike without creatures.. That’s retarded. Also, since I can’t be arsed to work on hidden surface culling, the whole thing is full of artifacts. But that’s intended, it’s like.. Uh.. Part of the visual style I’m going after.

Since the time is already running out, I might have to submit it to the Jam instead. I like jam.
