Tetrawave - Our 2nd LD as told by gifs

We kind of went into this LD without and preconceived notions to what we were going to make. It actually took us 2-3 hours of brainstorming and prototyping with sticky notes before we really decided. After a bunch of failed prototypes where we couldn't get a core mechanic to work in a way that would be fun, we kind of just landed on 'Tetris on a teeter totter' with the explicate goal that the pieces themselves wouldn't be wobbly, just the entire board. I had played a few prototypes of games that just said 'let the tetriminoes have physics' and for the most part they weren't super compelling. From there I did some prototyping and our artist, @miss-iiv cooked up a basic idea of what she wanted to theme the game as: Concept-vapor_ware.png

Through the awesome power of source control, I went through and collected some gifs of the game at various stages of the jam.

At the end of the first night the game was vaguely playable, if not very enjoyable: Prototype1.gif

We were a little worried that it wouldn't feel enough not like Tetris, and initially had some plans to add different weighted blocks to mix it up more, however when we first started playing the prototype it already felt pretty difficult and required play sufficiently different enough to Tetris that I decided to not add multiple block types with different weights.

After the first art commit, which caused some fun bugs as we had to merge work in the scene together: first-art-merge.gif

By the end of Sunday night the game was shaping up, there was still some bugs, but for the most part the game was getting close to ready. @hybridkin finished up the sound track and effects for the game so I spent some time implementing them into the game and @kadecgos finished up the high score board sundaynight.gif

Monday was mostly spent hooking up the last bit of art and connecting all the wires together. I spent a few hours trying to get a webgl build to work, but for whatever reason our high score board wouldn't work with those builds, and we felt like the score board was important enough to require the download lastbuild.gif

Overall we had a lot of fun, and we are pretty happy how it turned out. We all had some more things we wanted to get done but ran out of time on, however I think we prioritized the right things to make the game feel the most complete we could in the time period.
