Ludum Dare 51

Ludum Hangover

We are still tired from the weekend but now we're looking forward to play and rate the nice games that have been made. Feel free to comment this post with yours if you want us to give it a go!

Here's our entry, The Lamplighter

Lurking in the shadows

In our entry The Lamplighter we decided to go for a dark mood. We implemented the game with unreal and the main mechanic is a torch you need to charge to make your way through the eyes that lurk in the shadows.

Enemies

They had to be very simple but creepy & challenging. We ended up with a plane with a texture, and to do the blinking we only needed to scale the UP axis.

AI behavior

They had to reinforce the feeling of 1. danger ahead 2. being followed

Initially we tried to do the most simple AI possible: just entities that move brainlessly towards the player, to avoid creating complexity and dealing with the navmesh and behavior trees, but in the end we needed to go ahead and add a bit of complexity in this layer.

To do so, we implemented a very simple AI that just follows the player once they detect him, after a random time range. You can see the highly complex behavior tree: BT_EnemyCharacter.png

This only worked to reinforce the point 1. To create the feeling of being followed, we decided to respawn the enemies behind the player once they were killed with light. To implement this, we used a simple environmental query: EQS_Spawn.png

This generates a circle of positions around the player and scores every position with the following tests: 1. Prefer greater distance to the player 2. Prefer greater distance to lit lamp posts 3. Get only positions that are in the navmesh 4. Get only the positions that are behind the player

All the tests work together, but it is the test (4) that made the magic.

It Comes At Midnight

JAM GAME by Rodrigo Sousa (@rodrigo-sousa), Gabgé (@gabge), and Legolula (@legolula) midnight It comes at midnight has such a fresh identity. We enjoyed its narrative and visual style a lot. We had to show it to several people outside of the jam that we knew were going to love it!

Intomb

JAM GAME by protowlf (@protowlf), Loveschach (@loveschach), Ronn Fever (@ronn-fever), and LittleBlackDog (@littleblackdog) intomb Really clever level design and good use of the mechanics & theme. We loved the style and the vibes of the world, such an engaging story told in a succinct way!

Nine Knives

JAM GAME by Do3naut (@do3naut), Kaiway (@kaiway), and Fudgeawsome (@fudgeawsome) nineknives This game was something different to what we're used to. Really clever design and it was so engaging. The mechanics are simple to grasp but are surprising and fun and challenge you to think about your abilities in a fresh way.

10Y Lost, 10M Lives Regained

JAM GAME by jjbug (@jjbug) lostregained This was really something surprising. The narrative was told in a very interesting way and we got hooked. We would be so interested to know more about this story - there has to be more!!

96 beats per minute

JAM GAME by johanhelsing (@johanhelsing) beatspermin We like rythm games and this one had a different take on it. It wasn't frantic, actually rather calm and even meditative, but still with its own challenges.

And just in case you want to check our entry, The Lamplighter, here it is!

lamplighter A game about using your torch to light the way and keep yourself safe...

Congratulations to everyone who took part in this jam - We hope you enjoy our small round up of great games from this event! We still haven't played so many of the entries, so if you have a game we have to check out please drop it in the comments!

A Message for the Stone King

Hey! We're a small team of two from Spain and this was our second Ludum Dare together — we're quite proud of how our game turned out (even if we didn't have the time to do everything we wanted to, I suppose like almost everyone else here) and we'd love if you checked it out and let us know what you think!! 👑

Thank you for playing A Message for the Stone King!!

As we approach the final days of the jam, we wanted to say THANK YOU!! All of the positive comments have been a huge highlight and we're so so happy that people have been enjoying our game. We really enjoyed working on it even if we couldn't bring every piece of our design to life. We still think it turned out pretty well ♥️
