Ludum Dare 56

A tribute to a very old indie game - sharing with you all

Since LD is basically a festival of gaming, I am doing sth odd: allowing myself to share a game, very old by today's standards.

From 2006. It's an old gem of a crazy platformer! Definitely has its own character! Along with a few fresh ideas possibly?? Never beat it, back then with my friends, when I was little. Maybe unfairly difficult. Interestingly it ran on a 300 MHz CPU.. though it lagged like hell. 18 years later.. can I beat it? I just read it has over 170 screens LoL

The New Satan Sam

What a name to remember... still have no idea how this got into my hands back then. The guy shoots / blasts / rotates in the air and propels himself to beat the enemies and to jump over gaps.

To the older guys.. anyone ever played this?

Is it just me or

the theme this time doesn't even suck?! Hope the world is not ending hahaha

If you fail, don't fail

I am afraid I've been experimenting with this tree for far too long. Still it's extremely satisfactory!

tree-colors.gif

Long story short: most likely going for Extra, since I am kind of the exploratory guy who wants to take your time and basically experiment with stuff. This time took a different approach - paper first (flows, concept, etc.), mockups second till it feels good (well, it seems I've taken it quite far).

Haven't even started coding. So what you're seeing has been done via Paint.NET which is infinitely tinkerable.

Point being: if you can't finish it on time anyway to a point you are liking it (without destroying yourself), take your time and have fun (why not Extra?).

Why? I wanted to create a choice-based game where you get asked a number of questions about [your?] life (the GIF doesn't show the questions) and you choose either Red, Green or Grey cube as an answer - but you have up to 3 choices for each color. This forms a story that you get at the end. However I overscoped so much (based on my paper notes) that I am now enjoying actually the visual tinkering. But why not : )) just let's have fun !

I now wonder if I need to change the concept for the actual game... :D

Meta post

[this post is a piece of shared thought, nothing more]

A small piece of joy I'd like to share with you all. Yesterday I was thinking..

When I first joined LD 2 years ago I was absolutely stunned with the energy that's been flowing through it!! Absolutely blown away ! So much creative energy, so many authentic creations, effort put in just for the sake of it! For the process. For the love FOR games.

This is something trully very special. Don't know if most of us realize it. I don't always.

You know why [it is very special] ?? Because the world - is trully - full of fakeness, hipocrisy and facades all over the place. Just turn on an arbitrary TV channel and that becomes obvious in the first 7 seconds. You fall out of love  quickly. It's full of shit. ;) So are many aspects of modern life and when you don't think about it - well, you may have just forgotten the fact. Ironically, forgetting the fact also makes special events like this more forgettable.

And LD is full of genuine creations that are unbelievably... genuine. God damn, this is bigger than it seems, trust me. Everyone can find some expression of themselves through the creations they are building. And there are a few thousands every time!! How cool is that?!?! From the least exeprienced to the top masters. Probably the age range, too, is immense. What a better example of Democracy?!?! You think the act of voting is democracy? No, LD is democracy. I fall into a Nirvana when opening an authentic (even though simple) creation - every time! I have a gut feeling that THIS makes it stand since 2002 (was it?). Some guys here may have not yet been born back then haha.

Ok ok, I got too excited. Not even LD doesn't have its crooks (but that's not the point). I fuckin' love it.

--- (you can skip this part, it's boring details)

My stupid first-entry story, that I won't delete cuz already typed:

The first time I entered LD was 2 years ago. For some odd reason it popped up in my head out of nowhere, that I had read about some jam somewhat like a year before that. Then I checked and it was just starting the next day. I knew I had no setup but I had tried some things over the previous periods (or even, sporadically, years). That is, with a game framework and a programming language I enjoy. Very dirty, mostly experimenting and enjoying what could be done. Even read a book on game design (but I digress).

I was able to join the Extra making a Trully Ugly game hahaha. No sound, no nothing, BUT I tried creating somewhat meaningful mechanics. And it kind of worked out! And the game me more ideas and more stuff to tinker with later. And it's kinda been paying off lately. I enjoy making games (even very rarely) more than ever!

I even "made a few friends* here, which is something I totally did not expect.

--- (a piece for all guys that have no experience but feel there is something very special going on here..)

If you failed to make a game or The game you wanted, that's SUPER fine! Game development is an extremely complicated matter : ))) But creating a game, a piece of digital expression that can be VERY customized to express you.. is you know, an amazing feeling!

I have to thank the entire community (fuck the president-like speech-feeling connotation, I hate it in the guts) BUT IT'S TRUE :o: .. the entire community for the warmth and fuzziness and for receiving invaluable pieces of advice on my games over the last 4-5 LDs. Been eye opening, but you know what's even better?? This is all like one huge laboraty exercise - with many people over the world. Your subcontious mind will fit a lot of pieces without realizing (on game dev) just being here, just playing other's creations, even if you fail to deliver !! Especially when you get low ratings (that's super rich in nutrients). Espeically when people don't understand your game cuz you're tunnel vision.

Now I start to understand: here is why I read several times here that some people started their game-dev careers from LD (I thought: yeaaa right.. Bs). No, it's the environment that can make you see the bigger picture, very quickly! It's like a craft. And then it clicks.. and clicks and clicks.. ! And you actually start to understand what the problems are, start to make it better.. even playable games  after the 5th time XD Damn

@pov, you are awesome! LD is greater than stepping on the moon. In its own way. ♥️

A small postjam update - shinier tree and..

and a bigger question pool.

I am really sorry guys for not playing your games actively, but been neck-deep in personal and work obligations!

Still, I really wanted to include this (a small update) into even the original entry so I added a PostJam link to my introspective game where the tree asks you questions. Was able to do this just now, not earlier unfortunately.

No more updates for the jam, will have to focus on enjoying your LD creations : ))

This is from the most honest Youtube channel I have ever seen. Accidentally stumbled upon while re searching unrelated stuff. DAMN is this good! Plus the guy is actually discussing pretty on-point stuff while memeing it all

For the retro-game loving ones!

Note 1: If you are not 30 or above you may have never seen these games - it's a great opportunity ;)

Note 2: back in the day... games were unforgiving ;)) much harder than currently-accepted

Hey guys, I don't know about you but I had a good chunk of my childhood over video games with friends and I really wanted to share a (retro gaming) website with you!

I cannot believe but MANY of the games I played as a little kid, back BACK in the day, must have been 6-9 year old, could be found here! https://classicreload.com/

I just took 3 hours out of Sunday without being able to stop : )))

For the love of the old games!

I was actually looking for THIS one to find the website / it's SUPER addictive - Rodent's Revenge: Screenshot 2025-08-03 153221.jpg https://classicreload.com/win3x-rodents-revenge.html

Just a few examples of my favorites / I found a lot I played back then and will forever remember: Dune (wait, there was Dune III?!?!), Desert Strike, Hellfire, Golden Axe, Digger, Head Over Heels, even XoniX and Tower Toppler ?!?! JEEZ, cannot believe it!!!

Digger Screenshot 2025-08-03 151522.jpg

I didn't know that existed Screenshot 2025-08-03 161112.jpg

XoniX - the original.. I played this VERY young Screenshot 2025-08-03 153801.jpg

Game-dev wise: I believe we COULD learn A LOT from many of those games. Even though some of these don't run well or it's awkward till you figure the controls out, there are many classics! Note: many of those are available on SEGA (via emulators for comp) and they sometimes run better there. I played a lot on.. SEGA. Some of those on ancient computers though.

Which of those have you played? Is it a trip down memory lane for you? It sure is for me.. !

Enjoy! And have a great rest of the weekend! :love_letter:

Theme time

I don't usually post this, but let's test out something.

Remember... the more versatile - the better.

Ludum Dare 59

Behold the squary cosmose! Shoot with your telescopic camera!

Capture the green ones... the smaller the circle when capturing... the sharper the photo : ))) -> more points. Basically you are shooting blocky cosmic stars (with a telescopic camera).

Latest progress / video / ... lol (gifs are too big).

Day 2 screenshot (from earlier):dev-screenshot-2.png

Actively developing... trying to add some bonus and anti-bonus stars :) ....

Come beat some blocky stars!

Play here, my compo entry https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/59/$425229

In the blocky Cosmose there are NO rules. Actually, there are: photo-capture as many GREEN stars (signaling something beautiful) as possible!

Zoom in with your "camera" (or sniper?!) and press CLICK on the green ones. The "sharper" the zoom, the higher the points!

banner1small.png

Hope you enjoy!

I don't know if I created an FPS game or a relaxing arcady game xD

People getting negative end scores means they may have not made use of... the sniper shots. It was supposed to be a "camera" but it became more of a sniper.

sniper-mode-2.gif

But do we got the nerves?! to make use of that... :scream:

The overly-busy person in me thinks this is insane and he wants JUST TO RELAX playing this, not aiming too tightly... but the former-FPS fan in me says this is insanely cool.

I had to clear this confusion. This is a main tactic to get higher score. You can end up with a negative score here. XD

And please use CTRL key when zooming with the mouse scroll for precision. The circle can be a bit bigger for less points but sure hit :D
