Cranky

LD26

My first Ludum Dare, and I finished!

That was fun!

I wrote a simple Zelda-like that is actually more a Binding of Isaac-like.

Didn’t think I could finish a project like this in just 48h, but then again it lacks a lot of polish. The boss-fight(s) for instance are extremely rough.

I wish I had more time to implement enemies with more interesting patterns and also room layouts. Most of the time was spent getting the core mechanics to work, so I had no time to do more room layouts, altough the floors are semi-randomly generated.

Youtube Gameplay and Post-Mortem

I uploaded a video that shows a little bit of gameplay, also shows that I’m not that great at my own game :D

What went well:

  • core gameplay works as intended
  • basic randomly generated maps
  • loading different room layouts from files
  • random powerup items like increased damage

What went badly:

  • didn’t have enough time to make interesting enemies, they just home in on the player
  • there is only one boss, and a variation of it on floor 3
  • although room layouts are loading from files, there are only 4 different room layouts due to time constraints
  • made the main menu and game over menu in the last couple of minutes and it shows
  • not a lot of content overall

I think the game is kinda fun for a couple of minutes, but these kind of games really only shine when there is hours worth of content.

So although it was a lot of fun developing this small little game, from a gameplay perspective this kind of game was a bit too big for just 48h I think. Next time I will scale back and think about making a game that is fun although its only been worked on for 48h.
