I’m in I guess…

Its been a while since I last participated in a Ludum Dare compo. I attribute that fact to my lack of motivation and the ever increasing amount of university work I receive.

I will be using Java as my language of choice since that’s the programming language I am most familiar with. I will also be using the Eclipse IDE to empty my brain onto the screen with, along with Paint.net and sfxr to do the other asset stuffz. The only external library I plan on using is LWJGL 3 for the meat and potatoes of the programs backend.

I am not 100% sure on whether I’ll be tackling the weekend alone and entering the compo, or whether a friend or two will join me.

Good luck and I look forward to what everyone creates! 😀

In, I am!

So I guess its here again. More ludum for the dares. Going to be using Unity 5 for the game making stuff. Working with @MrDinosaur. Thats about it.

You can watch our progress at MrDinosaurs Stream

Im (possibly) in

Haven't participated solo in a couple years, gunna see how this turns out. I'll be using Unity just like most people. Nothing more to say really. Its going to be exhausting.

2 hours in. Time to sleep.

So i've decided to combine the 'Card Game' genre with 'Platforming'. I have very basic card, hand, and deck code working with a couple of test cards working (forwards, backwards). A quick video of it in progress can be seen here https://twitter.com/BradLSandford/status/987530304360472576

Tomorrow will be the bulk of the coding work including getting a base set of cards working (movement, jumping, weapons) and also working on basic enemies and environment stuff. Trying to find the right balance between platformer and endless runner will be interesting, almost tempted to go down the roguelike route.

14.5 hours in, starting to take shape

I overslept a bit so i haven't made as much progress as I wanted too. Ive polished up the test environment a bit and got collision and jumping working along with some behind the scenes deck stuff. A video of it in action can be seen here https://twitter.com/BradLSandford/status/987717402849955840

Next up im going to work on basic enemy AI (think goombas from mario) and some more behind the scenes deck management code.

23 hours in. Movey shooty jumpy cards.

So its been 23 hours and ive been working on and off for the past 9 of them, hoping to get in another solid 2 hours tonight before sleep. I've now got a mostly final card design done. Enemies and projectiles are now working aswell as base code for an 'infinite procedural level' system. Its getting there. As usual a video demonstrating the progress can be found here. https://twitter.com/BradLSandford/status/987843285120180224

Going to tidy up some of the deck code tonight and build upon the level generation stuff.

41 hours in. We (almost) have a game

It actually looks like a game now. Ive gotten all the cards working the way I want them (including derpy sliding). I just have to create the level now and balance it. Im going to make it pretty difficult and see if anyone can actually get to the end. Video of the progress can be see here https://twitter.com/BradLSandford/status/988111732936728576

Good luck everyone, its crunch time! 😄

47 hours in and its jam time im afraid.

So i've done a lot of work to the level today but I haven't made as much progress on it as I would have liked. All of the cards and interactions are now in along with the first 80 meters of the level; hoping to have around 150m in the final build. A video demonstration of some of the cards and interactions can be found here. https://twitter.com/BradLSandford/status/988198870227279872

I am currently writing a todo list of everything I want to add/change for the final build including completing/balancing/polishing the level, adding sounds, and improving user feedback.

Good luck everyone!

65 hours in. Have this low quality gif.

carddemo.png

Just polishing the game and adding sounds now, im on track for the deadline in just over 7 hours.

Journey to The Core, now with keyboard support!

So I've updated the post-ld version of our game to include keyboard support when playing the cards using the number keys. Ive also fixed a whole bunch of bugs and added in audio toggles. The final thing I want to do with the post-ld version is port it to Android.

Check it out now! Journey to The Core!

Ludum Dare 48

11 hours in...

...and I've slept the first 9 of those!

Me (the keyboard masher) and @MrDinosaur (the paintbrush fondler) have started brainstorming our project. Still early days but we have a decent idea of what we want to do. A card diggy explore thingamabob.

Concept.png

We're trying to keep the scope relatively small in compared to previous entries.

Time for lunch!

46 hours in...

...and it's all starting to come together.

We've got the core mechanics in place (using cards to mine and explore underground). The basic premise will be how far can you dig down and how high can you get your score before running out of cards in your hand.

Just look at that lovely card art made by @MrDinosaur

1 day left for us. Time to focus on making it feel fun to play over and over.
