I’m in too!

Hey!

I’m in! I’ll be using C# to create a windows game.
My tools of choice shall be the XNA framework, Paint.net and a yet undecided audio software.

If I end up needing some more advanced physics then jump/fall, I’ll be using Farseer.

I will also be taking a lot of caffine tablets and fast food.

Almost time

Ok we are nearly there, i was hoping to get  an actually decent nights sleep last night but that failed. I was also hoping to get an easy day in work today but that is looking unlikely too!

Whatever nothing prepares you for coding like more, different coding.

Following up from my last post I will be using http://www.bfxr.net/ as a sound generation tool. In my previous experiences with intense programming competitions, I can make passable art and great code but terrible sound so a tool like that which lets me create sound files fast is a real boon.

At the moment i’m hoping Adaptation or Evolution will be the theme but i’m up for anything!

Lets Do This!

This is what I shall be doing all my specing and drafting on.

First Screen

First screen! Check the exe name for a hint in what direction I’m taking the game.

Taxes.

Bugs….

A stupid amateur bug delayed me by about an hour.

If i had a project plan or time timetable id’ be behind. Good thing I don’t!

Naps.

I took a not entirely planned nap.

I’m not worried about falling behind tho. I’m pretty happy with the game play at the moment.

A bit of resizing of both the screen and the obstacles has made the game soooooooooo much more fun to play.

When it comes to game-play its the little things.

XNA Devs Read!

First of all I’m in, going to be using C#, XNA, VSExpress 2010, Paint.net and AudioTool.

This is my second Ludum Dare so I have lesson learned from my first time round.

1. Better sleep management. Not sleeping at all is a bad thing, over sleeping is a bad thing too. Find a balance. Where I went wrong last year was I was already awake for ~ 20 hours when the Theme was announced.

I crashed hard.

2. You are going to eat. Have food handy. Nuff said.

3. Use the tools available. This is not a competition about beautifully perfect collision detection or beautifully tight code. Find API’s that you are comfortable with! That will do the hard stuff for you. Below is a pre-built template that I will be using, It’s 5 classes with a total of ~150 lines of code, It contains structures for my game states, collision, classes you can inherit from for obstacles, opponents, levels and triggers for moving between levels. Any XNA user reading this should think about using it!

Other than that good luck to everyone! I am rooting for either snow, antihero, twisted or drone but I’m up for everything!
My place of work has a Christmas party on Saturday so I will be coding in parts while wearing a suit.

You mean you don’t always code in a suit? D:

First few apply to everyone though.

I reckon I’m ok by the rules,

“Base code and personal code libraries are allowed, but should be declared and shared with the community prior to beginning your entry. To do this, make a blog post.”

Code food

Code food for the weekend.
I shall sleep now as I have a full day or real work already done. Once I wake the theme will have been announced!

Though I cannot approve of Dolmio bechemel, I cannot fault the wisdom of preparing a slab of Lasagne to see you through. I am jealous

Could you share :) ?

I wake up to THIS!

I woke up from my pre Ludum sleep to see Alone as a theme.

I’m not trilled as it more dictates a story style then a gameplay style as as most people were not going to have any AI in there game anyway all games would have been alone anyway…….
But I do hope we get something interesting out of this!
I’m jumping between 2 ideas at the moment. I’ll let you know once i am sure.

Good stuff is good

I have working movement collision and triggers for level changes.

Obligatory screen shot

One of my flat mates has a Cat called Holly, she was VERY disappointed when kittens lost so she edited the my white board to include some improvements.

Day 2 Update

It may not look like much but this is level one done from a functionality point of view! Which is awesome cause the 3 main elements of the game had to be implemented to do level 1!

I’m going to go take an 8 hour nap. Afterwards level 2 + 3 get designed and I actually try to do some art and Music!
WIN!

…. Yes, that thing in the bottom corner is meant to be a Hippo……..

Level 2 and Art and Music

Since I last posted I have added 3 functioning teddies and a level 2.
Art has also improved.

I’m going to create level 3 and submit!

Teddies Post-Mortem

Thats LD 22! I had fun, I hope everyone else did too!

Like everyone else:

Highlights:

Code, I wrote good code, I had very few bugs or issues that I could not fix quickly and with elegence.

Music, I know people who play my game will go “What Music? You have like 4 note looping!” but in comparision to my last LD entry, which had only silence, the melody included is quite good I think :)

Game idea, My idea was good I feel! The game play support the story which supported the theme. A lowlight was my implemention of that tho :(

Lowlights:

Gamplay, the game it’s self is not fun, it short and its confusing. An absolute fail there. I focused on the gameplay funtional rather then making a game that people would want to play.

Art, I can’t draw, some day I will accept this, till that day i will continue to try and fail.

You can play Teddies here

Bring on LD23!

Design drunk, implement sober

A long time ago someone very smart said to me “design drunk, implement sober”.

I am DRUNK so let’s design!
Tiny World……..

RPG?
Big people impacting on a smaller world?

I’m going to sleep! Maybe sleep and sobering will pull together an idea for me.

This is precisely my development methodology.

Well played sir. Well played.

I am in, Am I in?

This will be my 4th LD. I did quite well in my 1st and 2nd. On my 3rd I ended up not competing, and posting some hilariously misspelt and incoherent blog posts, due to a self inflicted illness. (Don’t binge drink, kids)

The weekend of the jam I’ll be moving house so I’ll probably focus on getting a fast prototype that works with a touch screen. That is all I seem to be coding in work at the moment.

I have some rules for jams, 1st timers may find interesting.

GLHF!

Idea in the Bag

Idea is in the bag.

I sleep now.

Screenshot One!

I am feature complete!
That was fast…….

Now for art.
