My first Jam – Next Ludum Dare (#27)

Hi guys !

I’m Lo-X, I’m a french programmer that try to make some small video games on my free time.

For the first time, I decided to try the next Ludum Dare (#27). The challenge for me is to have something playable within the 48hours.

For the next jam I’ll use C++ and SFML, wich is a great library built on top of OpenGL. You can find more information about it on SFML website.

I’ll also use my own “framework”, just a bunch of tools using SFML in C++. It’s not complete yet but not far from being it. Anyone who wants to use it is welcome to do so. Here is the GitHub link. I’ll update it in some days.

I’ll perhaps make a livestream too, but I never did that so I don’t even know if I have a right internet connection, plus I don’t speak english very well, but I still would like to do it…

If you want, you can find more information about me on my website (french), or on my GitHub account.

See you !

Battlestation ready !

IMG_20130823_200854

It’s 20:15 in France, LD starts in less than 6 hours ans my desk is ready !

I’ll use C++ and SFML as mentioned in my previous post. My goal is to have something playable in less than 48h.

I wish good luck to every participant !

First Day Recap – 10 seconds barrier

10 seconds barrier – first day recap

10 seconds Barrier

The 10 seconds barrier is a famous duration under wich only the best athletes can run the 100m race.

That’s what inspiring my game. I kept it very simple as it’s my first LD. That’s a kind of guitar hero (you must press keys at the right moment to accelerate) and race game.

Most of the base code is in place, including difficulties and particles. I just finished animations including some fun stuff in the running one. Now I’ll add some sounds. If I’ve still some energy I could start character chosing and/or networking. Else I’ll go to bed, ’cause it’s 9:20pm here and I’m awake since the LD start (3:00am).

To be continued !

10 seconds barrier | My first LD game

characters

You’re an athlete that wants to get under the 10 seconds barrier in a 100m race. Can you ?

To accelerate, press your keyboard keys while your character is running over the corresponding letter on the lane. But don’t miss if you don’t want to slow down !

The difficulty and the speed increase after every race you win !

My experience for this LD48 #27

I was very worried about the time, 48h isn’t much to do a game when you’re coding it in C++ from scratch ! Plus I’m very not an artist and I’m alone, so I wanted to do something very simple that I could finish within the 48 hours.

The result is that I finished the basic game and arts in 24h, so I decided to get into another challenge for me : network my game ! Indeed I never did it before (for a game), so it was tricky. I finished just in time, with some bugs : I can’t get internet network game working every time, but it works in LAN. Wierd. Well, I learned things, that was the point !

Improvements

I think I’m gonna add some more characters. It was funny to add a unique posture to each one of them, even if I’m not a graphist and my artwork is approximative.

I’ll definitely fix nnetworking part as well. Sounds like I will use it in other games. It’s always fun when you can play with friends.

I’ll add some levels between level. Difficulty is growing hard and it’s repetitive. I thought about adding an infinite mode, longer levels, variable distance between and number of key zones. Perhaps event objects for networking mode, that can alter letters, slow down players ahead… Fun stuff !

Blogging break

It’s social break ! Let’s have some preview of what I did :

hammer-title

My game is about hammering things to death… Yeah, the only thing you get for Christmas was a HAMMER. But a huge one. Let’s start smashing !

workinprogress1

For now you can smash… at nothing because enemies are not yet implemented (nor drawed). Then we will need some blood spiting out of cute things, some UI and some SMASHED or KNOCKED DOWN TO THE GROUND texts.

See you later for more shattered todeath stuff !

Oops ! I’m in !

Hi guys ! I’ve been preparing for this LD but forgot to check in :/

I’m Lo-X, I’m a french programmer that try to make some small video games on my free time, when I have some :p

This LD will be my third one. I’m mostly here for fun, I usually skip the ranking part.

I’ll use C++ and SFML, wich is a great library built on top of OpenGL. You can find more information about it on SFML website.

I’ll also use my own “framework”, just a bunch of tools using SFML in C++. It’s not complete yet , but never will be. Anyone who wants to use it is welcome to do so. Here is the GitHub link. I’ll perhaps update it in some days.

If you want, you can find more information about me on my website (french), or on my GitHub account.

Good luck to everyone !

Planning phase

Hi there !

It’s 4am here in France and I finally came up with something. I chose my basic idea and did some tests to check if it works. It will be some kind of RTS.

Now let’ get into the planning/conception phase. No code, just pencil and paper or a text editor are needed. It will be the first time I attempt a RTS game, I always considered that as hard to do (well). But hey, we’re here to try out things !

Good luck to all of you !

Some “I’m in” title here

Hi guys !

I’m Lo-X, I’m a french programmer that try to make some small video games on my free time, when I have some :p

This LD will be my fourth one, but I managed to finish only two games in previous Ludum Dares. I’m mostly here for fun. Each jam I try to improve one aspect of my games. The first time I managed to add networking, then came some scripting. This time I’ll try to improve the audio. I usually use sfxr and autotracker.py to auto-generate and then tune the audio art, but this time I’ll try to make some mixes with existing base tracks. I’ll perhaps record some stuff too, as I have some instruments or things that do sounds at my disposal.

You can checkout some of my games or other tools/libs on my GitHub account.

Good luck to everyone !

I’m not fast enough

I’m exhausted, the game development doesn’t go as expected… But still, I believe :)

Some trouble with the gif colors, but, yeah.

Here we are !

Well, not all the features I planned are implemented, but the game is still fully playable and, I think, fun.
Time to port on Windows !

Game Testing Session #1

game_testing_session

Hi guys.

Usually I test games in the dark corner of my room and don’t tell anyone about anything. I decided to be a bit more social this time and I’ll share with you my feelings (about the games of course). That will be a good way to share people’s games. I decided to talk about games that I found on my own entry page, as well as the first ones (in order, when I could play them) from the entry list. No distinction between Compo and Jam, I just click the link, play, write some notes and feedback.

Dodge Pong (Compo)

Really good arcade game. The addictive ones. Movement are a bit tricky at start but you finally get used to it. I really like the weirds effects the ball can have. Sometimes it just spin around me and I don’t know what direction to face. The precision meter is a nice feature, it remind you how much you suck at touching the ball :)
That’s a really fun and addictive game, simple and fun.

CERT (Jam)

That’s a Super Meat Boy like, with perma-death. Fans of Super Meat Boy will like this game. I’m Super Lame at that kind of game and get frustrated very fast so I couldn’t finish it, there certainly is a lot of challenge in that game.
Graphisms are nice pixel arts, there is a nice fake old tv screen effect.
The only weak point is the lack of audio content.

Penguins Can’t Fly (Jam)

Well, as a Linux user I couldn’t let a game with penguins escape without a test.
Penguins Can’t Fly is a fairly simple but yet entertaining game in which you can shot everything that moves. AND I LIKE THAT. Just spammed my canon, try to get these aliens out of my sky. It become more and more challenging as times goes. Speaking about time, the nice touch is that day and night mood.
I just regret not having some score board of all my runs to compare them.

Ocean Crossing (Compo)

Okay, I’ll be honnest that’s not the best game I played so far. In the game you have to cross an ocean by going right (east) and some random events, positive and negative, will happen. Ultimately, it’s just a question of luck, for the good events to balance the wrong ones. I managed to cross after three attemps just by pressing the right arrow of the keyboard continuously. So entertainment is a minima, an easter egg (that I haven’t found yet) is hidden in the game. I suppose it’s a matter of exploration but nothing sure. No music, either. The graphics are pretty nice tho.
That said, the creator just had 7 hours of work and that’s not so bad for making a game like that.

Television Screen (Jam)

This was an hard one for me. Not the game itself, but the fact that you can only move with WASD and I have a french keyboard with ZQSD. Including arrow keys would have been nice, that’s what I do for lost guys like myself.
I would have expected better graphics from a jam entry. The music become annoying soon enough but, well, isn’t it the game of almost all of them is any jam ?
I had trouble to understand what the goal was so I almost only explored.
This guy took the theme seriously, the game is actually inside an image of a screen.

See you soon for another test series !

Basic movements and weapon usage

I’m done adding movements and weapon usage. Now I can add some zombies, make audio, sounds, camera shakes, particles, etc. Okay, I’m feeling a bit late…

It looks like he’s peeing blood, sort of. But only a little?

Yay! 😀

Throw all them unicorns!

Gameplay Preview

All the gameplay is implemented, as well as AI. Tomorrow I’ll do all the fancy stuff: camera shaking, camera splashes, sounds, musics, particles, etc.

I think the game is done

I have the terrible feeling of forgetting something…

Meanwhile I play my game and use the extra time to tweak some values! You can have a preview of the game here:

Nice results!

Yeah! I’m 61th in the “Theme” category!

I never compete for the global Top 100 because I’m not good enough for that and my pleasure comes from coding the whole game from scratch, but if I had to chose a category to be well ranked in it would have been the “Theme” (and “Fun” and “Innovation” if I had to chose more).

So this is a really good news, I’m so glad :)

Muchas gracias to everyone that took the time to play, rank and give me feedback about my game!

No inspiration for the “I’m in” title

Hi guys !

I’m a french programmer that try to make some small video games on my free time, when I have some :p I can say it’s been a long time, last time I made one was for 32nd LD… We’ll see what I’ll be able to do.

This LD will be my sixth one, I managed to finish four games in previous Ludum Dares. I’m mostly here for fun. Each jam I try to improve one aspect of my games. The last time I kinda wanted to improve my workflow and my custom framework (built on SFML in C++) but I just hadn’t any time for that. This time we’ll see what to improve, maybe the music.

You can checkout some of my games or other tools/libs on my GitHub account.
