And the gameplay is done

Now there’s a wave structure, beginning simple but getting harder. Also stats on the bottom. Also² sounds and less earrape music.
After 30 waves, the game is over and scoring will happen in the final version. But for now, GRAPHICS.

Spray pepper spray at incoming people with Arrow Keys or W A D.

Now listening to: Koi wa Sensou – Miku Hatsune

Progress on Sprites

AHAUDIGAS MY EYES ARRRGH

First time spriting humans – it’s not that good, but a lot better than expected.
Left: Background and Cutscene, then Scoring.

Now listening to: World is Mine – Miku Hatsune

Pretty much done

It’s a game! With online highscores! And pepper spray! You KNOW you want to play it!
If you got some free time, please leave me a bit of feedback (too hard/needs more waves/needs more bombs and nukes) 😀

Now listening to: Strobe Nights – Miku Hatsune

Pretty cool :) Although I don’t seem to be timing it right, managed to get a few greats – but failed practically every time. Might need to make it a touch easier, or hint at when the best time to spray is (couldn’t seem to figure it out)

And it’s done!

TADAH!
Also it seems the human limit is 28000 points while 45000 are possible.

Now listening to: Strange Comfort – Bit Shifter

Another “I’m in” post

Hi.

Things I’ll be using:
– FlashPunk, FLEX and gedit for coding
– sfxr for sounds and pxtone for my first sorry try at music
– GIMP for graphics
– tons of orange juice for surviving

Right now I’m trying to get something together in pxtone which doesn’t make ears explode around the world. I suck at this.

Honestly, I don’t really see the point. The watermark is not a bad thing as it is not interfering with the game and nor is it even very visible; the price increase is not a bad thing as it could easily be sold for 250-300$; the game is still your own creation. YoYoGames provides an important resource to many: They provide web hosting for literally hundreds of thousands of games. You have to remember Sturgeon’s Law here. The games are ugly because the developers suck. Only about 1% of the stuff created and posted is actually a diamond in the rough; the rest of the stuff is crap (Yes, this applies to my own games *laughs*) Genuinely good games can be created with Game Maker, and, if you are able to create an extraordinary game with GM8.1 Lite, consider that watermark as a trophy, one that proudly says that Game Maker is an excellent tool, and that you are an excellent programmer for breaking the limitations that the watermark mentally places on you. There are actually very few limits that cannot be broken in GM Lite, namely Internet access, textured 3D (untextured 3D is possible with some maths knowledge), external resources, and extensions.

I. AM. READY!

Woo, BIT.TRIP reference!

So I’ve prepared my stuff, collected the content generators which were all over my drive in one folder, and tidied up my desk a bit.

Suyo's Desk Photo (LD21)What do you mean, that’s not tidy? You should’ve seen it before!

Yes, online highscore. Also this looks interesting.

Spreading the word

I’ve got two people in the contest now – one has been developing for a bit now, and the second one has just started making games again. Let’s see how they do :)

If you see some people called Bogdan or Star King around, say hi 😀

Good job getting in more people!

So what is you coding soundtrack – LD #21 edition

>> LD22 edition
<< LD20 edition

Last time I have already asked what you guys listen to to get you in the mood. So, why not do that again?

Right now I’m listening to some VOCALOID stuff. Later in the playlist, there’s the VVVVVV soundtrack waiting for me, then the SMB soundtrack and finally BIT.TRIP. Yay!

So what are you listening to?

I am listening to a live stream of the Starcraft2 tournament at Gamescon. Somehow I need distractions like that. Later this day I will switch on commentary of the German Bundesliga soccer matches.

TO INFINITY AND BEYOND!

Infinite level generator! Without obstacles and variation yet, just going down and right and down… but hey, first time doing something like this and it’s working!
Camera is also working – a bit jumpy, but meh.

Clicky!
A/D or Left/Right to fire Grappling Hooks
You can only fire at visible walls ot close to the border ones
Red line appears when you try to do an impossible shot

Taking a break

It seems my lava is bugged. It keeps flowing even past walls. Blargh.

Anyways, have a screenie before I go take a break:
Grappling Hook Screenie
(ignore the green borders, it’s just Hitbox display for debugging

I think I’m going insane

I want to have 50×50 tiles of lava spreading beetween walls. Sounds simple, should be simple.

Sadly for some reason it isn’t.

The first time I create the lava source, every tile thinks it collides all the time, even if it doesn’t.
The second time I create it, every tile thinks it doesn’t collide all the time, even if it does.

What the hell? D:

Dawn of the Second Day

~ About 18 hours remain ~

Let me show you what I did while the site was down:

I finished the basic engine! You can die, there are obstacles, and it’s infinite.

So what’s left to do today?
– Scoring
– Sounds and Music
– More level variations
– Some graphical improvements
– Online Highscore

Alright, let’s roll!

EDIT: Oh, and have a link to the newest build.

Suyo? Making remotely good music? What is this?

If you noticed my ear assassins in the last two LDs, you might want to turn off your speakers as soon you play this. But do not worry, as the music actually went pretty well this time!

Well, it didn’t start this well first. I left my trusty Ubuntu to boot in my non-trusty Windows. I started pxtone, and first stared at the thing for 10 minutes since I had no idea how to make a good sounding song. Then I just screwed around for half an hour, remade the main theme of Hatsune Miku no Shoushitsu for some reason until I found the Effects window. And I got an idea.

I didn’t use pxtone to make music, I did the sounds there.

After quickly throwing some together, I rebooted again, this time into Ubuntu Studio, where I jumped into Hydrogen Drum Sequencer and made a little loop.
Then I jumped back to Ubuntu again, slapped everything together and here we are.

Have a link: Update 4
Controls are still the same: A/D or Left/Right to fire grappling hooks, run as long as you can before HOLYCRAPLAVAITISSOHOTAASFGSAFIFASFAS.

Next up: more level variatons. LET’S DO THIS

Some more variation

Before, I had about 10 obstacle layouts. Now I wrote a little tool for myself, which allowed me to raise this count to 30 in just half an hour.

Link is here: Update 5
Next up: Graphics and Eyecandy stuff.

Going into detail

Now that the basic game is done and I added some eyecandy, I’m doing some little gimmicks. For example, the ending screen will show you now which path you took while trying to escape:

Suyos Record

Will someone beat this score? Maybe, we will find out, because I am starting to work on the Online Highscores now! Wooo!

This looks awesome!

And that’s it!

Another Ludum Dare beaten! YAY! \o/

You’re trapped in some kind of endless corridor, with two hooks and lava chasing you. Best story ever, right?

Try to escape the advancing lava with your hooks and swing around obstacles in your way, as the wave gets faster and faster, until just a single mistake seals your fate as you are engulfed in the hot doom.

Think you got a good score? Submit it to the online highscores and compete with all the players!

PLAY IT!VIEW THE HIGHSCORES!VIEW THE ENTRY!
Post Mortem coming tomorrow. Maybe.

So I just tried to google “Ludum Dare”

And Firefox suggested this to me

Seems like Notch is quite famous in LD. Well, he brought tons of people here (including me), so not a big surprise.

Anyways, I’m fixing up some things in my game and making a video on how to get faster. My record is 230km, and nobody went over 100 in the highscores yet. SHAAAAME ON YOUUUU.
EDIT: Video is done!
