LD13

Day one:

Hey LD peeps! Some really cool stuff being posted here today! :)

I’ve been working on something for this too, but I didn’t want to post until now because this is the first time I’ve tried taking part in Ludum Dare and I wasn’t sure I’d be finishing it – but it’s starting to take shape, so here it is:

[bigger version]

It’s an experiment in non-linear storytelling – I’m taking a somewhat metaphorical approach to the theme, heh. Also there are actual roads in it, I promise!

I should have more tomorrow, all going well. I think I’m more or less done for today…

Day 2 (So far, anyway)

9 hours and 14 minutes left people aaagggghhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Thought I should post another screeny or something. Probably wasn’t big nor clever to make a content driven game :(

NONE SHALL PASS!

Pathways (Demo)

It was a bit silly of me to try and make a game that was so dependant on content :( All the same, I’ve managed to complete enough of the game to demonstrate the concept I was going for. It’s about 50% complete!

I really liked where this was going, so I’m probably going to finish it sometime next week (and polish what’s already there quite a bit). Things are a bit rough at the moment, so it might be better to hold off playing it until then (unless you’re voting, of course).

This has been my first Ludum Dare, and it’s been great! I’m pretty sure I’ll be doing the next one. Good luck to everyone else who’s aiming to make the deadline! Can’t wait to check out all the finished games tomorrow morning! :)

[Edit: Decided to take down the link. I want to finish it properly and I’m not happy with a lot of the placeholder stuff in the game. Consider it withdrawn. Sorry ;-;]

[Edit again: I removed the final tag – hopefully that should take this off the voting list. Sorry if I pissed people off by removing it; I should never have submitted it in the first place.]

C’mon, this is Ludum Dare … it’s not like we have high standards ! Seriously, looking forward to the refined version since from the screenshot, it looks pretty cool.

It should be ready soon. Real soon :)

You should have left it in the competition, you would get gfx/sfx 5 from me. I really liked what you pulled of in two days.

Bloody hell Terry…

…you should definitely left it in the competition, clear winner out of all the games I’ve played so far…

it was awesome – I played through the storyline where you arrive home and she’s dead, the first time; I realised the whole roads/pathways concept and it was just great… think that path has the best writing too.

great game, beautiful scenery, nice story

Possible entry: Minimalist

So, just found out about this tonight and thought I’d make up for the fact that I still haven’t finished my LD13 entry yet 😀 I’ve got an idea for something using the “Minimalist” theme; will start work on it tomorrow morning (I’ve only got till 5pm here, so it’ll probably be fittingly minimal, heh).

Progress!

I’m only starting really, but here’s a progress shot:

Still need to implement… well, everything… 😮

Pathways, LoFi RPG Jam

Hey guys! I took part in the Roads Ludum Dare, but unfortunately withdrew my incomplete entry, Pathways. I’ve since finished it, and I thought some people here might be interested in it based on some of the comments that I got back then…

You can download it here! (windows only for the moment, I’m afraid)

On a totally unrelated note, there’s a contest-like-event taking place this weekend that I’d like to let you know about – RPGDX are hosting a 48 hour RPG making jam! The theme is LoFi. More details here, if you’re interested! :)

Well,…it is really nice! A good kind of story-telling-engine that build up a quite immersive atmosphere and make me think of that old “interactive-books”.

I played it almost to the end. The last part where I search my girl I somehow stuck in a black screen and after a while it said “The End”. I will try it tomorrow again….

Nevetheless very good work! I really like that kind of graphics! (A cool party was formed for killing the dragon) 😀

Ok…keep on rocking!

Dooooooom

Hey all :)

I’ve been working on something for this too, but haven’t made a lot of progress yet. Spent most of today just getting the engine done, about to move onto content now! Plan is to get the actual game finished up by tonight, and have tomorrow for graphics and music…

Because I’m just using placeholders, I haven’t got much in the way of a screenshot yet – but here’s one anyway:

Bullet Time Preview

I’m in the same boat as jovac – decided last minute to put something small together. It looks like it’s gonna take longer than I thought – I spent most of my night fixing some broken collision code in my framework… Anyway, should have a late entry to upload sometime tomorrow, with any luck!

Bullet Time

Just finished my posthumous MiniLD entry! Next time I’ll try to make my mind up about entering a lot sooner, heh.

You can play it here! The goal is to survive as long as possible.

Very nice. For some reason I love the way enemies shatter when you hit them. I wish the thing was running at 60 fps though, would really help in a super-twitchy game like this. I’m still fighting for the 30 second mark.
30. May 2009 · 10:00 UTC
It’s great, and because of its shortness it has that addictive “just one more try” quality, much like Self Destruct. I also think that the limited Flash framerate is hurting this game a little, but it’s still very playable.
30. May 2009 · 17:58 UTC
Yeah, I really wish I could have gotten this to run at 60 fps, but in my experience browsers really don’t seem to be able to handle it :( I read somewhere that firefox caps the actual framerate of flash apps to keep CPU usage under control; even if you get 60fps on your own machine there’s a good chance other people won’t.
DrPetter
31. May 2009 · 07:43 UTC
Terry: I got Chup running at 60 fps on most machines and browsers I’ve tried. Seems the latest couple of flash players are greatly improved over old ones in that respect. Having said that though, it also measures actual framerate (using a simple timer that triggers every second and counts number of frames drawn up to that point) and drops into frameskip mode if it’s too low. On my Eee the game only gets about 20 fps, but it’s still playable.

Are you using vector graphics (or bitmapData.draw), or are you copyPixels:ing into a screen bitmap? 100 small images shouldn’t be a problem at all if you’re just copying pixel data without transformations. I saw a demo somewhere that did like 2000 64×64 pixel sprites at 60 fps.
31. May 2009 · 10:02 UTC
Ah, interesting! I didn’t know you could handle your update code that way in flash, I thought it had to be through an enterframe event!
DrPetter
31. May 2009 · 18:16 UTC
Yeah, I still do it through enterframe, but basically when it detects a too-slow actual framerate it’ll increment a frameskip variable and reduce the stage framerate. Each time the enterframe event triggers, it’ll step through [frameskip] number of logic steps and then render one frame.

The Best Years of my Life

Done! Started this one on Sunday morning, so just about managed it in 48 hours.

This is a game for two players, seated at one keyboard. Playing alone is not recommended. Once you’ve found a second player, play it here!

Cool. Not sure I get it the message, but the use of co-op is always an interesting twist, and appropriate given the theme.

RPGDX Sidescrolling Contest, Klik of the Month #26

Hey Ludum Darers!

Just a quick heads up: If you can’t contain your anticipation of this month’s coming LD, there are two opportunities to vent this weekend!

First up, RPGDX are holding a 48 hour contest, with the theme “Sidescrolling Mini-RPG“. It’s not a sub genre you see a lot of, so there’s bound to be lots of room to explore it! A few of you might remember the LoFi RPG contest earlier in the year, which went down quite well :) The rules are loose, and attempting to make an RPG in that kinda timeframe is a pretty interesting experience, to say the least. More information here!

Also, if you happen to have two hours free at midnight on saturday (GMT),  Glorious Trainwrecks host a rather cool monthly jam called Klik of the Month, which happens to fall this weekend. Klik and Play is the recommended development environment, but you can use anything you like – the only rule is that you finish whatever you’re working on in just two hours. More information on that here!

Personally, I’m planning to do both :) And can’t wait for Ludum Dare!

good to hear that you’ll be in for sidescrolling minirpg (also, I totally overlooked the theme ;p )
13. Aug 2009 · 10:48 UTC
What exactly is a “side-scrolling mini-RPG”? Well, I can imagine from the name what it would include but I never heard of that as a genre.

Like Wonder Boy in Monster World only… mini. Small RPGs, presumably platformers, I guess.
14. Aug 2009 · 08:01 UTC
So basically it’s a side-scrolling platform game with RPG elements. That sounds like fun. I’ll try to participate.

very sad i don’t have time for this. i love sidescroller rpgs like paper mario and cave story.

Me too

Officially declaring my intent to enter too :)

This is my third Ludum Dare. The first two times I didn’t finish by the deadline, but I’ve entered and completed two mini ludum dares since then, so hopefully this one will go better! Liking the themes so far a lot.

I was hoping to give Unity a shot this time, but it turns out that my laptop can’t handle the editor. Oh well. I’ll probably use flash then.

Whoo, high five!

Third time lucky! Let’s compete for awesome gains!

Starting Over

I’ve been fiddling around with music and graphics all day, but I can’t seem to get my idea to come together. So I’m scrapping it! And starting something else right now! Er, don’t know exactly what, yet.

Right so, night

Er, ok! So I think I finally have an idea I like! Will start working from scratch tomorrow morning.

Some great looking entries here – can’t wait to play them all :)

Yikes

So, only two hours left? Hmm. Have a bit of a dilemma. I actually haven’t gotten far enough to implement the core mechanic that makes my game work! I think that’ll take a good hour, which doesn’t leave much time for anything else.

All I have to show at the end of my 24 hours is a basic platform engine and a few basic game elements. I don’t have time now to develop the idea I wanted to do properly, so instead I’m just going to try and muck up something with what I have – which isn’t much. It’s better than nothing, though. Here goes!

Ascent

I can’t believe I actually got this in in time :)

I created “Ascent” in one day, after scrapping my project from saturday that wasn’t going anywhere. This one almost didn’t go anywhere either, but I changed direction in the last few hours and managed to produce something at least playable.

Play here!

Mini Ludum Dare #14, Find a Partner!

Heya Ludum Dare!

So it looks like I’m hosting this month’s Mini Ludum Dare. I’m going to suggest the weekend of the 13th-15th as the date, though if you’d like to participate and that doesn’t suit, speak up and we’ll find something that works for everyone.

[edit: ok, since there’s been no major objections, let’s make it final – November the 13th-15th it is!]

I’ll post the theme that Friday. For now, I’d like to announce a rule change – Ludum Dare and Mini Ludum Dares are normally solo challenges; for this one though, you are required to collaborate! Get on the IRC channel, find someone else who wants to take part and agree to work together! Any number of people can contribute to a project in any capacity – the only restriction is that you cannot work alone.

Oh, and I’ve looked over the wiki and such, but am a bit confused by time zones (being in Korea). What time, exactly, will the theme be announced, and what time exactly does development start and end–and in what time zone? Will the theme be posted on this site, or only in IRC? Sorry, haven’t taken part in one of these before.
11. Nov 2009 · 16:42 UTC
I’m interested! I need partner!

Mini LD #14 – Have you got a date yet?

This month’s Mini LD is this weekend and the theme will announced this Friday. If you haven’t seen the post yet, it’s a team competition – to take part, you’ll need to find someone to collaborate with.

If you want to participate and haven’t found a partner yet, leave a personal ad in the comments! Let people know what you can do, and how much time you’ve got free this weekend :)

I’m considering it, but I don’t want to code. Leaning towards just doing audio for someone’s game, but I suppose I might be able to do some graphics as well. My plan is to inquire on IRC once the compo gets rolling, since there’s bound to be a bunch of people in the right mindset about.
11. Nov 2009 · 23:24 UTC
I’ve got two people who are willing to help a little bit (some sprites and a song), but I’ll still be doing most of it. I hope that’s good enough? I’d be happy to let more folks join us if anybody is desperate to find a partner.
