Ludum Dare 46

Is it too late to say I'm in? Is it too soon to say I'm done?

HeartOfTheWorldTree_Screenshot3.png

This is my first ever game jam, so I didn't end up making a blog post when I started. But here we are now, my game for the Jam is finished and published! Sure, there's still time left on the clock, and plenty of improvements I could make, but I decided to stop here for now. I'm feeling good, and I'm looking forward to playing and rating your games, too!

My game, Heart of the World Tree, is essentially the gameplay of the classic title Breakout but reversed, so you are protecting the blocks from the ball.

Hey, I know this isn't my game, but...

...seriously you should check out Cub Valley by @cresceda @sam-minh and @binaryspark ! It's a really polished game with interesting gameplay, but way fewer ratings than it deserves.

Preparing my setup for the jam

I just spent over an hour battling against Unity, trying to prepare and re-use my main menu and pause menu from my previous Ludum Dare entry. Apparently moving from 2019.3 to 2020.1 breaks a lot of things in what should be just a simple export-import routine...

Oh well, this is why you prepare things like this ahead of time, so you can use your jam time actually making the game, not fighting against your tools.

The hour draws near!

Good luck everyone! Remember to have fun! Don't take it too seriously, don't stress yourself too much.

Jam-tip for Unity collision

If you are trying to make projectiles that collide with objects, don't even bother with the basic Unity collision (3D or 2D), just do raycasts instead. Never once have I got reliable results with Unity collision, but raycasts work always. If your mileage differs, please let me know how you did it.

Alarm! The enemy horde is here! There are too many for you to defeat all alone…

…but whenever you die, you respawn alongside your former lives. Can you defeat the horde and break the endless cycle?

Fire in the hole! Available for HTML5/WebGL and Windows

Armour technology has far surpassed the capabilities of ammunition and explosives. The war machines of today can only be destroyed by hammering them deeper and deeper into the Earth, all the way to the molten core of the planet.

Unfortunately my hurried attempts to create the terrain destruction algorithm from scratch left some bugs in the game, so be warned that you may fall through the world or encounter some invisible walls...

The infinite robot army is here! You are the last line of defense against this overwhelming force. The only thing we can do is hold them off as long as we can.

Use our last resources to construct towers along the enemy's path towards our base. Whenever you destroy an enemy you gain more resources. Construct more towers or upgrade them with the resources.
