Island of Bounty (working title)

Yo. This is my second Ludum Dare, but my first post. So hi.

I was a little disappointed with the islands theme, but with a little creativity and bending of rules, I was able to use my concept.

In this game, you play as a hunter for a small tribe, and you explore your island and gather food, slaying warthogs and other beasts.

I plan for three playable characters: A shaman who can control animals and cast healing magic (gathers plants), an archer who can shoot arrows and has several arrow shooting enhancements (gathers meat and plants), and a sword using warrior (gathers meat).

Currently, I’ve made the title screen (http://i43.tinypic.com/15y7mew_th.png) and got my character walking around (http://i41.tinypic.com/29pus6b_th.png).

I’m loving the wobbly character movement, and the cute art style I’ve got going.

I’m coding this in Flixel.

Unfortunately, I probably won’t finish this in time, because 1) I won’t be staying up all night and 2) I have homework.

But I want to see how far I can get with this.

Ciao, Ashkin.

Out of time :'(

Darn, bed. School in the morning, so I have to go to bed early. No playable build to show, and I won’t get back before the deadline.

So… I like the thing I have going. I’m going to keep going with it for the next few days over the deadline to make something playable. So far I’ve got arrows working which took way longer than it should’ve… Walking, a map, background… What can I say, I’m not very productive.

I’ll just leave this here…

Bye for now, Ashkin

Aw, the picture makes it even sadder 😐

Looking forward to the playable thing, tho!

Oh boy, Mini LD!

I didn’t know there was a Ludum Dare this weekend! Hopefully I’ll get something done. I plan to:

  • Work in Flixel
  • Make a game about some industrial manufacturing plant- perhaps a factory or oil-refining plant
  • Graphics in Paint.net
  • Have an interesting graphic style, perhaps black and white with color highlights.
  • Have simple game mechanics
  • Actually finish and submit within the time limit
  • Not have the game be completely hated by the masses

I think I’ll warm up with some graphics. I’m a little rusty.

Wish me luck!

5 Hours In, Ashkin Joins The Fray!

Sup.

Finally got an idea. Basically, it will be Sokoban, except you play a person who is exceptionally ALONE. You push clay blocks (thanks _frog on #tigirc) into a kiln to create a golem so you won’t be lonely anymore. And that’s pretty much it.

P.S. I’ll be working in AS3 (Flixel library), using GraphicsGale for graphics.

Have a Nice, Dank Dungeon

Before I go to bed, I better post what I’ve done.

It liiiiiiiives

Play a demo here.

And now, I’m off to sleep.

I’ll be watching this closely.

Good Morning, LD!

Mornin’ everyone.

Just got up and had breakfast, then implemented blocks of clay that you can push around!

Big block o' clay.

Next up: A kiln, and then combat!

Yay, Kiln!

A golem in the making!

Kilns are in! They burn with fire, and you can drop blocks into them! Also, you can now push and pull blocks.

I’ve come up with a title for my game: Luto Hominus. It means clay man in Latin, which is basically what a golem is.

… I am way too far behind schedule.

A demo before I head to bed…

Okay, I got some randomly generating dungeons in. They generate with a spawnpoint, a block, and a player! They’re rather bland right now, but I’ll fix that later.

Dungeons and minimaps!

As seen in the screenshot above, there’s also a minimap now! Hooray!

Here’s a demo if you want to putter around in the dungeon.

Arrow keys move, hold space for minimap. You can push/pull blocks once you grab them.

BUG: holding left while transferring between rooms with the block means you phase through the block. Shaping up regardless :)

Transferring to Jam

I… I didn’t make it. The game is buggy and unfinished. I don’t want to submit this wreck.

Instead, I’ll be participating in the jam (the shame!). Here’s a demo of what I have now, though:

Luto Hominus Post Mortem

A post mortem for Luto Hominus.

Well, I didn’t exactly finish in time, did I? But I submitted the unfinished game anyway. I think it was definitely a learning experience for me- though this isn’t the first time I’ve participated in Ludum Dare, it’s definitely the farthest I’ve gotten.

When the theme ‘alone’ was announced, I was rather disappointed. I had really wanted to participate, but no ideas immediately sprang to mind. So I spent the next few hours taking walks and talking to people on the IRC. Eventually, I got the idea of a sokoban clone where you had to push blocks of fuel into some kind of alchemizer that would turn them into a friend for you. _frog on #tigirc suggested that I make the blocks of fuel blocks of clay and the alchemizer a kiln, and I got started.

I set up a basic world with grid-based movement, a block to push around, and a kiln as a goal. However, at that point, I realized that I wasn’t any good at puzzle design, so I binned the idea of a sokoban clone and kept working. Eventually, a new idea dawned: A roguelike game where you had to fight off The Loneliness (that spectre you see at the top) while moving the block towards the kiln.

Unfortunately, I ran into some complications. Work got in the way of making the game- this weekend was probably the busiest, work-wise, I’ve had in the past month. I didn’t prioritize properly: I spent way too long working on the minimap and level generation (there are 75 possible rooms!), rather than working on game-centric stuff (there’s not even a menu or a win condition, or a lose condition.) My vision wasn’t clear enough- I didn’t have a good idea in my head, I was making it up as I went along. I just wasn’t organized enough.

But what I did do, I’m proud of. I made a partial game faster than I ever have before. I learned more about procedural generation, stuff that I can apply to my main game project. And, most importantly, I had fun- it was great hanging out in the IRC, looking at the stuff other people were doing, frantically coding, idea jamming, etc.

Thanks for the great time, guys. Looking forward to seeing you all again come LD #23! Happy holidays and an awesome new year, everyone.

Participation!

I’ll probably be participating in this Ludum Dare.
I shall use Flashdevelop with the Flixel library for coding, with graphicsgale for graphics.
I probably won’t do music.

Movement!

The black dot is you.
First demo, with simple movement and stuff.
Not much else to show at this point. I want to make a game where you race around the equator of tiny planetoids, pretty much inspired by Chevy’s keynote.

Know what this is? It’s a polar bear in a snowstorm…

Road Generation!

On the road again~
Demo!
Roads are now in! They generate randomly and junk. Press space to generate a new batch.

I actually lost at least 5 minutes on LD time playing your stuff, and I had some early good time !

Good Night LD <3

I’m heading to bed. I’ve been working on getting little track/skid effects going. Tomorrow I’ll finish that up, and then get some boosting in. Then pretties, then, who knows?

Gotta Go Fast!

Skid marks!
Demo!
I added skid marks for when you quickly change direction (slight loss of traction) and also boosting! Hold space down to go superfast. Press ENTER to generate a new track.
Next up: Making things pretty!

An Idea

I think I’ve got an idea for creating competition and such.
Basically, when you want to do a race, you type in a seed. Then, this seed generates a racetrack- if the seed is the same, the track is the same. Then the game will download a highscores table for that seed, and you’ll be able to race against a ghost of the racer who got the best time on that specific track. There’ll be a feed on the title screen displaying new records and newly discovered tracks.
… Now I just need to figure out how I’ll pull this off.

Prettier Roads

WHY DID I SPEND SO LONG DOING THIS
Yep. Roads are now prettier. I’m still working on generating a road from a seed- no way I’m going to finish in time. Maybe I’ll take a break and add mines.

Night, LD

That was close.
Demo!
Well, I’ve got school tomorrow so I won’t be entering the competition. Might have time for the jam though. I’ve got mine spawning in now! They don’t explode or anything. In the demo, type five numbers and then press enter to generate a track with that seed. Same seed = same track. Don’t enter any seeds with things less than 2000 or something.
