The Lies We Tell

This jam I wanted to try out 2.5D, and ended up doing it with a taxi game! It was great fun to work with that perspective, but in particular I found it interesting to try and hack around so that the flat sprites felt like physical objects. Quite a few elements in the game are physical, such as the streetlights falling over when you drive into them, but at the center of it all is the car! In the first image we can see a screenshot from the main menu scene, where we just use Godot's Sprite3D nodes to place "flat" sprites into a 3D world. Note that these have billboarding enabled, so they will always face the camera (at least along the floor normal).

The in-game car, however, hides an invisible car built using the vehicle simulation system in Godot, which is how the wiggly-diggly movement is achieved. For a good hour or two during the jam, I had to tweak and tune on the sizes and parameters of the chassis and the wheels, such that the movement both felt fun and "believable". There is still a way to go, but we are jamming after all!

Anyways, that's one of the many lies that we tell to our players. Feel free to try out the game! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/58/taxitax
