To Dare or not to Dare?

I’m not quite in yet.  Although I’m quickly running out of time.

This is really just a hello post.  I’ve never done a Ludem Dare before, but I’m a big fan of the Global Game Jam.  I’m thinking about it since I’ll be at MAGfest over GGJ weekend.

I did sign up for Twitch.  You know.  Just in case…

Ok, I’m doing it!

I’m in.  Why not.  I wasn’t doing anything this weekend anyway.  I have a Twitch Stream up: http://www.twitch.tv/bcole99.  And I’ll be talking though some ideas shortly.  But first COFFEE!!

Brainstorming

– Tetris style Puzzle Game with Character movement.
– Single Screen. Level ‘builds’ itself.
– Player can break blocks
– Blocks fall from the sky
– bottom most blocks clear
– spikes at the bottom.
– Avoid falling blocks
– Avoid spikes
– It’s procedural, so no level building!

– Stay alive?
– Some type of collectable (coins? boring?)
– Some type of goal (put the something in the something?)
– No enemies? (no AI! YEA!)

– Stretch:
– 2 Player? More?

… Like Mr Driller upside down?

————————
Basic goals for tonight:
– Sketches of Game
– Framework setup
– Player Movement
– Blocks Spawning

… I’ll do some quick sketches.

Falling stuff

Looks like there are a lot of falling stuff concepts.  Is this too obvious?    Should I add a snowman?

ALWAYS add a snowman 😛

Phaser

So, I have no idea how to use Phaser, but I’m going to learn.  Tonight.  Finally I have an excuse.

Well THERE’S a lot of time wasted!

Still learning Phaser.  Still trying to get the basics of a project up and running.  It’s slow going.  I think I spent over an hour just trying to get the scale mode set correctly.

Ok… on to getting a player moving around.

Something!

I wasted a LOT of time screwing with Phaser physics, but I finally got something up and running.  It’s not entirely playable yet, but I can finally start monkeying with the actual gameplay!

Not perfect, but I have a game!

Gameplay_2

It’s frankly a lot more fun than I thought it would be at this stage.  It’s changed somewhat from the orginal intentions.  The goal is to match similar colored bricks together and avoid getting smashed or hitting the spikes.  I’m going to try to get death in there real quick, then maybe get some simple animation and effects done.

Well that was fun!

Haha, the art sucks and I didn’t nearly get as much as I’d hopes to have finished.  But it’s a pretty fun little game anyway :).

.. I mean, I like it anyway 😀

DONE

Well, that was fun!

Gameplay_4

This was my first time using Phaser, and most of the jam was spent trying to figure it out :).  It’s not perfect, but I think it turned out better than I expected! I’d appreciate a play and a rating! Thanks!
