PostMortem – BLIND (biNARy_gIRL)

elo.. :)

this is my 1st post mortem so i dont really know what to put or start with..

i DO know that i really enjoyed talking to like minded people for once and being part of the great community :)

what went right:

i was quite happy with the overall gfx side of everything.. ideally i would of tried to get some more effects etc in there but time and all.. i was pleased with the droning BGM aswell… just borderline annoying as to still in your head hehe

what went wrong:

i spent far too much time trying to get the sound working better as the game should rely heavily on this part but i just couldnt seem to get certain sound libs to perform glitch free and had to spend some time trying to learn others quickly and in the end i just decided on a simpler approach.

ideally i wanted to have the pitch/pan and gain to reflect how far and which direction to sonar bounced off a wall etc but it was forever crackling and not working properlly (it probably down to me not understanding to libs fully)

what i learned:

i had a good few i deas for the theme but quickly realized they would have taken alot longer than i had so had to scrap them and think of a simpler but diff concept. i realized im not that bad of a programmer and if pushed can produce things quick enough gfx/sound especially :) (not in a big headed way just in that normally i constantly put myself down and never think im decent at anything..anyhoot ;p )

like i said previously i enjoyed it thoroughly (and still am with the community side) and i do like rating games altho i do think it would be better possibly if each entrant was given 20 random(least ranked) entries to rank (not knowing whos game you were ranking) to stop people going straight for their favs ?! maybe after the 20 random then it would open up and let you rank further entries ?

ahh i duno heh

well anyhoot thanks to every1 who puts on this comp and to all the ppl ive met since ..until next time my like minded  loons :)

mother of god

i completely forgot about this .. i see i have only 10 hours until close..

need to get working on something ..

hmmm…

LD28

IN

missed the last one and haven’t programmed in a while now..

but i should be able to come up with something

java / reason

:)

i think ive forgotten how to code

i even had to google how to do random numbers :)

maybe im just getting old.. new things have pushed the old out (ala homer)

all the basics are what is taking up all my time

i managed to have a moving red square on the screen ..YES!

sick of java

every ludum i spend like 50% of my time trying to make

the bloody thing work online with libraries etc..

works perfectly fine locally via eclipse

but not from browser now as seem oracle have done some security thing.. tried looking to lower security settings in java ctrl panel but it doesn’t have the bloody slider.. grr heh

anyways im done but just need to sort this easyogg lib out online

i shall learn another language for the next one as my java days are done..sod it :)

DONE.. sore old eyes

if  you don’t like the game you might like

the music/sfx as i spent far too long on them ;p

notes:

i kind of went off on a tangent and lost the theme really (my idea wasn’t that good to begin with heh)

but i came up with something, so here it is :)

i decided to leave the gfx clean’ish. i probably spent abit too much time on the music and sfx
but i was trying to make up for lack of theme and a rubbish game ;p

i dont think il use java next time..starting to do my head in with all the security things
(sorry if you get a security msg, i don’t know how to get around it)

thanks guys.. had fun cheers :)

JAVA APPLET

simples :

arrows / wasd

-just hover off the blue objects until they disappear
-avoid the orange/red object
-u can recharge in the middle (green)
-you are safe on the outsides (depending on which way the orange object is coming)

screen1

you can try it here if you like :)

had a scary thought

with all these games im rating and offline exes what is stopping someone from having a bogus game on top of something more sinister ..like as im playing the game it is quietly deleting files in the background from random places it finds etc..

surely it wouldn’t be hard to write something to do that..im sure i could ..or maybe im missing something heh

was just a thought as it has just dawned on me..  i suppose its all just based on a trusting community thing?! ..some people are just evil at heart tho

i hope im not giving anyone any ideas heh ;p

There’s a game like that already. It’s a space invaders type game that deletes a file for every invader you kill. Needless to say, it wasn’t that popular – and that’s why you haven’t heard of it!

heh.. bizarre concept.. i like it in a strange way..

Just run them in a VM, it’s not that much of a hassle.

LD29

IN (enough time to learn a new language ?)

im contemplating learning a new language for this ludum..  everytime i have used java

but i realize i spend so much of my time just getting to the point where there i can just draw

something to the screen/input etc.. i start from scratch everytime and dont seem to be coding

in between ludums so i forgot alot of it by the time the next one comes around ;p

i was just wondering if any one had any suggestions to quickly try and learn another language with

possibly a framework in place to get up and running quite quickly as this time i would like the put

more into the gfx/sfx and actually gameplay instead of building everything from the ground up..

plus im kind of sick of fighting with java to get it working online with ppl having to update/accept

security things etc..

cheers

howie :)

Hello !

For every ludumdare, I used Python with Pygame. But this time I decided to change and discover something different, and I choose to try Haxe.

I think you can learn it really quickly, because for me, it’s similar to Java (but it’s less annoying, I have to admit, I don’t really like Java :p)

There is multiple game framework for Haxe, I choosed HaxeFlixel, but there is also HaxePunk and Flambe (or OpenFL if you just want a basical library).

The big inconvenient is the lack of documentation.

That’s a tricky one. It all has to do with frameworks.

I like Java, but I haven’t found a good framework yet. libgdx sounds good.

Keep in mind language != platform. Only you know yourself well enough to know if there’s enough time to learn a new language/platform before LD starts.

thanks Sporidios.. a few have mentioned libdgx ..i think i mite have a look at that.. could be just want im looking for actually.. i still like the lowlevelness and java is fine really as long as it takes abit of the pain away ;p ..ive tried gamemaker years ago.. its abit too UI for me.. im really surpirsed at myself for not being fluent with unity yet.. tried it a few times and just never clicked with it.. i thought i would go mental for something like that ;p

frogger (demake)

doh.. just realized i didnt upload my frogger demake

here is it if you want to try it.. i wont hold it against you if you don’t ;p

frogger

a friend tried it and he was getting java security issues and couldnt play it but it

works fine for me.. see this is why java is starting to do my head in and im looking to

start learning something else.. its probably just me being daft but it seems every

ludum i come across another problem i have to get around with java..

The Java Security issues might have just been your friends web browser asking permission to run the applet. If it’s not working your friend might have disabled all Java applets from running.

thats what i was thinking but he claims its all up to date and fine.. i ALWAYS have trouble getting the applet working for everyone for some reason.. i get there in the end but its always a mad rush heh.. im getting to the point where i would like people not to have to download/update/change anything to play my game.. like possibly html5 or something.. ive just been looking into monkey-x .. i know nothing about it so far but mite try and quickly learn that before the weekend :)

ahhh

hungover .. not even thought of an idea yet..   going good so far =/

i do this everytime.. its like i enter my own 24hr ludum ;p

hopefully will start something soon *gulp*

:)
