Ludum Dare 46

Pizza With A Pulse - Behind The Scenes

Welcome, we are proud to present you Pizza With A Pulse this year!

This is our third Ludam Dare game done as a team. As well as the marking of a year that our little team has been making games for you guys to play. Because of this and because we want to celebrate the year of progress, I (@Chambre19) am going to take you on a bit of a development tour and talk about our process!

So as much as we like to say that our process is pure chaos, we actually do have some set things we do to help our process go smoothly.

On the day of the Dare, we get together a few hours before and discuss our plans for each theme. Typically we make sure that we have something for all 10 themes in order to give us the best chance to hit the ground running. So far it has worked spectacularly. This usually amounts to a single paragraph for each idea like these:

Ex: 1 Minute to Prepare - Plan a surprise birthday party for a friend in 1 minute using items found around your house. Maybe a list of items is required (e.g. candles, cake, present) but you don’t have the actual items available? Lighting a pencil on fire gives you candles, etc.. by @thegrandpa

Ex: Garden - survival horror from kid perspective in exaggerated garden. Aliens invade and are in the garden. Hedge labrynth, apple tree to distract enemies, etc. by @Slimabob

With these ideas we usually all have input. In order to make it fair as well as something that we all equally love and are passionate about. Some of the themes however are things we end up not being interested in. But thankfully with our process and our diverse group, there is usually enough overlap that every theme at least has one idea assigned to it.

Our idea this year ended up being from @thegrandpa. @divic also added that the controls could be based off a similar concept from a game called Enviro Bear 2000. Of course the similarities end after the driving and camera position. But it was a good jumping off point for us. We also ended up striving to make the game chaotic like the screenshot that got posted in discord.

After we have discussed every theme idea, the next step is getting our collaboration tools ready. Because we are all so far apart, we use a few different things to help us communicate and stay organized.

Discord is our main form of communication, without it I'm not sure what we would do. Desktop Screenshot 2020.04.18 - 17.58.46.19 (2).png

Beyond that, we use GloBoard on Gitkraken for organizing thoughts as well as tasks. Desktop Screenshot 2020.04.18 - 18.14.35.29 (2).png

And finally Google Drive for shared Documents that each of us can edit. Desktop Screenshot 2020.04.18 - 18.16.10.53 (2).png

From there it is a matter of using our combined talents to create an awesome game for you guys. Each of us has an important job to fulfil so that we can be finished by the 48 hour deadline! As far as I know we haven't really talked about or introduced the team, so I will make this one year anniversary our world premiere!

@nodude is our composer.

We also have others in our friend circle that make cameos and help us with little bits. Shoutout to Renny and Kt2Goofy for doing sounds and screaming respectively!

Also as an added little thing for fun, we always stream our entire process on Mixer for your viewing pleasure. These streams are usually about 40 hours long. We just invite each other to a Co-Stream and work the nights away. Desktop Screenshot 2020.04.18 - 18.41.41.77 (2).png

And honestly, that is about it... There is of course more, but we can’t give away all our secrets! Thanks for reading! See you all in the next one.

So without further adieu, here is Pizza With A Pulse.
