Composing The Music of Beyond Death - TIPS for Composer.

LINK TO THE GAME Hi guys, I've had a lot of fun composing the OST of this game, some people have asked me how i did it tho. The answer is really simple. I've simply used Finale Notepad 2020 along with the VST Garritn Orchestra that comes with it. Surprised? Well there is a few things you can do to make your MIDI-sounds sounds better straight into Finale without going to a DAW ! 1. ADD Dynamics! especially Crescendo and Decrescendo. It makes the music looks more alive! 2. ADD articulations, and by taht, i mean a lot of it. As an example, my persussion and my accompagniment could have staccato or accent, sometimes both on each notes. 3. ADD reverb. Yes, you can use plug-in straight in Finale. Adding a Reverb helps a lot to smoothen the rudeness of the MIDI sounds. 4. Why did i used MIDI instead of a better VST? Simply because i didn't have the time. Composing straight into finale does the mix for you,and you can adjust if needed so you can focus on the quality of the music instead of the mix.If i had more time i would import my midi file in a DAW and use better VST.Also i tought that this MIDI looking sound were fitting quite well with our World

That's all for now stay tuned! And if you didn't play our game, i recommand you give it a try!

Making The Music of Beyond Death - Composer TIPS

LINK TO THE GAME Hi guys, I’ve had a lot of fun composing the OST of this game, some people have asked me how I did it tho. The answer is really simple. I’ve simply used Finale Notepad 2020 along with the VST Garritan Orchestra that comes with it. Surprised? Well there is a few things you can do to make your MIDI-sounds sounds better straight into Finale without going to a DAW !

1.ADD Dynamics! especially Crescendo and Decrescendo. It makes the music looks more alive!

2.ADD articulations, and by that, I mean a lot of it. As an example, my percussion and my accompaniment could have staccato or accent, sometimes both on each note when required.

3.ADD reverb. Yes, you can use plug-in straight in Finale. Adding a Reverb helps a lot to smoothen the rudeness of the MIDI sounds.

  1. Why did I used MIDI instead of a better VST? Simply because I didn’t have the time. Composing straight into finale does the mix for, then you can adjust if needed so you can focus on the quality of the music instead of the mix.If I have had more time i would import my midi file in a DAW and use better VST.Also, I tought that this MIDI looking sound were fitting quite well with our world.

That’s all for now stay tuned! I'll try to write a blog post that will talk about the music aesthetic choice I've made concerning the game.

And if you didn’t play our game, I recommand that you give it a try!

Ratings feel...... Terrible

The title says it all, As i'm not a programmer, but a sound designer, i'll only comment the Audio category. It's really disappointing that the ''winning game'' all have only between 20-30 ratings. 20-30 ratings don't necessarly means bad soundtrack or sound effects, but i heard better in other game who have more ratings,(not talking about my game here)

To me it just makes it obvious that, the more ratings you have, The less chance you have to get at the top because you are way more subject to super picky critics. If you do the math, you'll understand why.

I think it's kind of a problem if you want to make it a contest with position. My game was one of the most rated game (350 ratings), which is a lot and i got 78 th position on audio which is not bad, but still, it feels bad to see people who just took premade audio assets or people who have just 20 ratings or barely rated any games going up on the ranking.

Also, some of the games that have higher position don't even have an Original soundtrack made during the jam, which feels even worse.

How do people note audio? SFX quality, how good it's programmed in the game? Made during the jam? my guess is that most people used pre-made SFX... not super clear. On the music side, do you need an original soundtrack?

IMO people who don't make their own SFX and music from scratch should opt out of the category cause they have no credit for the assets, or either make 2 category SFX and Music. It doesn't mean a game should have no SFX or music but it's not your asset, plz opt out.

I think the organisation should think about how the ranking works and add more criteria on how game should end up in the top 100 at least.

Peace, :)

Creating the Music and the sound of Unstabled Goat

Creating the sound and the music of a game can be a complicated sometimes. It's not like an artist who can just select a color palet than start from that. When you are creating music and sounds, it's always about the mood and how you want to represent certain elements in the game.

Goin into the music theme, I wanted to represent the character of the goat itself. If you haven't seen our beloved goat, here it is! Goat

Obviously, when I started composing the music, I had no visuals at all, so me and the atists sat down and established what we wanted our goat to represent.

-Funny/Joyfull -Decisive -Simple Minded/light

The way I represented those traits in the music are as follow. the decisiveness is represented by the fact I decide to make a March in a carnival style, which just go foward, they can't turn back once they start moving! Also, instruments like trumpets and horns add to this aspect, which is why they are mainly used. For the simple minded aspect, it is reflected threw the melody of the theme, it's not overly complicated and it's very light. I also gave the theme to the flutes at some point to emphase the light and joyfull aspect to break the roughness of brass and trumpets especially, to make some variations and lighten the music as a whole. In the B part of the theme the melody at the horn is a little bite more sad for a moment, which was intended to represent the fact that our goat friend in unhappy with its current life at the barn and wants to break free, What a silliy idea ;). Of course the goat scream was a must!

Preview: a goat dream preview.PNG

For the level music, the team only told me they wanted something more stressfull and moody, which can mean a lot of things! I think that keeping the march aspect was a good call since it creates cohesion in the tracks as a whole and the game itself is a march. speaking of cohesion, the mood can certainly change, but you got to keep some of the previously established elements to keep some cohesion. I think that retaining the silly/funny aspect was also one of the main aspect of this game. Which I kept. In the track it is mostly represented with the cowbell and the gliss of the trombone. The the me of this piece really represent the goat running from the barn with a silly cart with way too much luggage. Going into the next section of this piece you got the trombone doing a gliss and the the flute responding to the trombone call. I wanted to represent the relation between the goat and its hamster friend, like the two were having a dialog, Than there comes a more melodic line with the flutes, which represent the difficulty of the travels ahead and the travels itself, the "we are going on an unkown adventure" aspect of this piece. Than of course the piece had to be a loop, so theres no real ending.

Preview: fleeing in the night preview.PNG

The beauty of sound design is to do big with nothing. I made every sound in the game and most were done with my mouth : dash, NOM NOM and all goat scream. Of course they were edited in a software haha :). Most of the sound i didnt really had to think because they were too standard sound, like the cart clliding or the rock smash sound. But on the carrot pick up sound and the sound where the hamster gets the carrot i had this crazy idea of the goat picking up the carrot asking like a question to the hamster if it wants to eat and the hamster being like YES!. I instantly had the idea of the "nom nom" and i knew it wold help to keep the silly aspect alive.

I will probably write another post later on more specific music technique if some people are interested. I mainly wanted to talk about the tought process in this one. Hope you like it! Writing the Music of "Definitely Not Titanic"

Writing the music for this game as been an adventure of his own. Since I was not only dedicated to the music and SFX for this jam, but also had to show unity to one of our programmer, program stuff and do UI. I had a lot of job to do and little time to put into the music itself. However, I really tried hard and manage to make the music approximatively 4 hours.

I started with the music for the final cutscene. I had this idea of a string quartet or trio playing a sad music when the ship is sinking to make a reference to the movie. For this part I really knew what I wanted to hear and the idea popped up really fast in my head. I wrote the score in less that 20 minutes and since I'm a violin and viola player. I also recorded myself instead of using computer sounds to play. That way it would feel more organic. And than, under one hours the music for the final cutscene was done! Here's the score for curious people :)

Definitely not Titanic Quartet Score.png

After that, I still had to write the music for the main scene of the game. I knew that I wanted something upbeat to convey the feeling of stress the game is suppose to give you. Although I knew what style I wanted to do, I sat for like one hour just trying to find a theme I would like. I finally came up with something and than I got that genius idea. What if I hide the theme of "My Heart will go on" as an easter egg in the music? So I did! I have hidden it all over the song although you can hear it more easily at the beginning of the second part of it ;) The real challenge was to have an original song and not copy the titanic music.

For those who played the game or will play the game, try listening to the instrument in the background that plays a melodic line under the main theme. There's a variant of the beginning of my hearth will go on in minor. And at the beginning of the chorus, the flute plays the beginning of 'My hearth will go on' chorus. try and see if you hear it ;)

For those wondering which tools I'm using, I like to write my score on Finale and to render the playback, Note Performer really do miracle with little to no work for those kind of game!
