Hey! :)

The AI of a noodle-head.

I’ll be completely honest, I’ve looked at other peoples entries and I’m ashamed that I haven’t done as much work (or made my game look as good) as other games. Oh well, things got in the way. Christmas shopping, watching the hobbit, and other stuff.

Anyway, I mostly programmed VERY simple AI. The zombies will follow you around.

More on the story mechanics etc etc later, But for now here’s a bad screenshot:

Back to work!

Update

Today I woke up LATE, which didn’t throw me back, but it did annoy me a little.
So far I have:
>>Path finding hero
>>Zombie AI
>>Simple Menus

I’m a bit behind, but I’m still working. I need to add the main mechanic: Zombie dropping. What I mean is dropping zombies into the field to destroy the player.

This is how it’s summed up in the tutorial screen:
TutScreenshot

Update

I’ve really made everything look quite good, particle effects and blood splats. I also added a wonky as hell tilemap. But crunch mode and what not.

The drag-and-drop mechanic was scrapped for a faster click-spawn formula.

IT’S DONE!

WOW! This past weekend has been a blast. I’ve loved talking with the community, and actually pushing myself to see what I can do.

The final game I made has no name. You place zombies to kill a hero. There’s a ‘good’ ending and a ‘bad’ ending.

It’s not very good, technically it’s my first game, But I’m REAL glad I got it done.

Here’s a link:

(By the way, it’s a .rar)

One thing I didn’t fix for some reason was the “Gun fire”, It appears next to his head instead of his gun.

SCREENSHOTS!

The intro

Action!

Action!

Of course, a Post-Mortem.

I’ve been looking forward to this.

So I have to list the stuff I did well, stuff I didn’t, And goals.

What I did well.
-Made an actual game
I had been making games for a while before this, but I’ve always been kinda scared about releasing it. I decided to take part and I’m glad.
-Zombie AI!
I made my first AI! I’ve made stuff like moving platforms or goombas and what not but never something which thought for itself.
-I actually finished it.
It has a beginning, middle, and end.

What I didn’t Do well
-Rushed
A lot of levels where made in quite a panicky state and I felt I could have tried harder.
-Buggy
Zombie AI is very buggy.
-Story
It ends very abruptly and doesn’t really touch on the theme. I had very little time on my hands and I felt I should get the mechanics down before anything.
-Game maker
Game maker isn’t a bad thing; It’s just I’m bored of it. I like programming when It can keep me interested and Not frustrated.
I originally planned to do it in AS3 and Flashpunk, But FlashDevelop kept crashing and time was scarce, so I resorted to Game maker.

I had fun, And hope you did too. See you next time!

MiniLD!

So, Ludum dare 25 was very fun and now we have a new little compo!

What I may be using:
>>> Language:*
>>> Framework:*
>>> Art:Paint.NET and/or Flash
>>> Sound: LMMS

Looking forward to this!

* This is a bit of a blind spot really. It’s a tie between :
Lua/Love2D;
FlashPunk;
XNA;
Java;
game maker.

I’ve gotten In depth in most of them, and I’m not to sure which one is best.I’d love to hear some feedback on the above languages.

Let’s get started!

Workstation of amazing awesome!
My workstation

For those wondering the portrait monitor is a dell P170S, That I picked up for £15, but RRP it’s £175!

As for my tools, this is a general overline —

>> Language = AS3, XNA or Plain ol’ Java
>> Engine = If AS3, than flixel.
>> Sound = Audacity, or some sounds website
>> Music = FL studio (or fruity loops).
>> Graphics = Paint.net or Flash
>> IDE = (AS3)Flashdevelop, (XNA)Visual Studio 2010, (Java)Eclipse

Hope to have fun, will be posting screenshots soon!

So here’s my work so far…

The original version of the game was built on Flixel, but the game became too complicated for me to do it in flixel so I changed to game maker, as I am bettered opted to GML than Flixel.

So here’s a screenshot —
Look at my amazing amount of progress!

Look at my amazing amount of progress!

Hope to get some more work done soon! It’s time to go to bed now!

I’m Done! Finished! Kaput!

MY ludum dare game, Space prisoners in space, is done! Go here to download it!:

MASSIVE brownie points for you man! Eager to see what kind of RTS you come up with in eight hours 😀

Tool Troubles

I have no idea what toolset I’m gonna use, to be honest. Previously I’ve used Flashpunk & Game Maker, but I’m having tilemap issues* and Game Maker isn’t optimal for me at the moment.
(The following part I digress into my recent tool experiences, feel free to not read on)

I’ve also had my eye on C++, but I can’t seem to configure it or any of it’s libraries(SDL,SFML) to work**.

I’ve been mucking around in unity, but It just doesn’t…gel with me. I think it’s because the language(“Unity Script” I think it’s called?) seems really inconsistent.

Coming from a Animation background (Flash, that is) the first language I tried after game maker was AS3, and I feel I haven’t toyed with it enough to really go in to detail; It’s going fairly well.

And finally is Love2D. The syntax was very foreign to me, considering that at the time I had never heard of Lua. Love2D is nice, but it has no dedicated (Is that the right phrase?) IDE so that really puts me off.

Thanks for listening and I’d love some feedback.

*The tilemap is all scattered and doesn’t comply with the actual tilemap in the OGMO editor. Feedback is welcome
**Could someone help with this please?

Unity uses 3 languages: Javascript, C# and Boo (Unity Script? I think I heard it somewhere…). If you know C++

Sorry, accidentaly submitted.

If you know C++, you should be OK with C#.

If you haven’t got your libraries compiling in c++, don’t even think about using it. That’s one language where you want to have your ducks in a row before you dive in. I mean, I love it (especially C++11), but you have to be prepared. Just getting your framework together with the libraries of your choice can be a project onto itself.

I’ve participated in 2 previous ludum dares, and I realize that those games kinda suck.
Like, really kinda suck.
This LD I’m hoping to be able to make something that’s complete, looks good, has sound and is fun to play.
Good Luck!

Am I the only person?

The timer in my game was implemented towards the end, but I’m worried that It might not count up in actual seconds, but some weird variation of a second.
Could anyone help?

Need more information on what you are currently doing to keep track of time. I would post some code up on pastebin.com or another site like that and link it here or in IRC so we can help you better.

I got it fine now. Thanks for the help anyway.

The Space Loop — A late Postmortem.

I have some time on my hands, so I thought I might write a little postmortem.

Overall — I’m quite proud. I feel the game meets the idea of what the game should be like (the controls are a bit slippery, though. This seems to happen with all my platformers).

Art — The art, for me personally, is a bit of a flaw in the game. I didn’t change it from the tester images I gave it for some reason; It escapes me at this time.

Sound A bit bleh.

Music I’m really proud of the music. I composed it all myself in pxTone. The melody isn’t the best, and I understand that that’s kind of a crutch, but overall I’m happy with it.

Story It was kinda tacked on. I like it but I have to accept that it was tacked on and not very explained.

Engine and Coding Flashpunk worked brilliantly. I originally wanted to write the game in plain AS3, but I figured a pre-built engine would help.

Community Goddammit I love the feedback. I thank anyone who played it, and those who commented. Thanks so much.

Thanks for reading, everyone!

Oh hey look ludum dare

Neat. Another Ludum Dare. I haven’t been programming in a long time, but I’m still ready for Ludum Dare!

Software: Flashdevelop, Aseprite and Pxtone.

I’m in!

I’m in for MiniLD 28!

My tool set will be:

Language : As3 / C#
Engine : Flashpunk or XNA / MonoGame
Art : Flash or ASEprite
Music : PXtone
Level Editor : Ogmo Editor

I’ve been dabbling in a lot of XNA recently, but I don’t think I’m ready to use it for this compo. I may create a post compo version in XNA though. I actually started a flash game today, but held it for MiniLD — There was no way to import “Conspiracy” into it.
Have fun!

MiniLD 49 — I’m in!

Half an hour till compo with absolutely no ideas what so ever!

Tools:
Language >> AS3
Engine >> Flashpunk
Art >> ASEprite / Paint.Net
Music >> PXtone
Levels >> Ogmo Editor

Good luck and I hope to have fun!
