LD 38

Les petites planètes. Graphic design progress. End of Day 1.

Our development process started with a little disaster: electricity went off in our area. So while eating breakfast we agreed on what story and gameplay we will do for this LD and decided to go to the city center to D3C0D3 bar (SPb, Russia), which holds LD events every time. We thought that this place will have ideal atmosphere and, what's more important, electricity.

A little info on our game: it's graphic is inspired by Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, so my personal goal is to make it cohesive with nice bright elements. Please note, that I'm a part-time amateur artist, not a professional one. My favorite style to work in is pixel art. Today I tried a little more minimalistic pixel art than usual, it feels different from what I'm used to, and therefore is challenging.

Finished: - space background (but I will re-make it, because I think it doesn't go well with other details of the game, too detailed, gradient will look better if painted pixel by pixel) - basic Little Prince sprite and walking animation (though he may not be walking in the final version) - Sun sprite(static) - planet sprite - star sprite - rocket(bomb) sprite - 4 bubble indicators (will show the stages of conflict between planets) Print screen of the layout (not final) with all the elements for now: http://imgur.com/6j3oAgk

Getting back to work.

Les petites planètes. Background.

That's an example of how the idea may change completely during working process, and one should not hesitate to start again, if time allows. Before lppembackground.png After lpp/embackgroundemfinal/emsun.png

Also cracked how to draw meteors, so they don't look like poo.

Les petites planètes. End of Day 2.

@Greeny7 has made a post showing overall progress with a gif, so I will ramble a bit about my accomplishments today. A lot of things change during the process, because you can't see the elements together or in motion. Meteors: while they didn't look like poo, as they turn out often, in the game they resembled cookies, lol. So I had to make them grey. And that was a good decision, because this color goes much better with the whole design. meteoremlarge.pnggrey/emmeteor_large.png

Shooting star: when @Greeny7 made it rotate in the game, it looked really horrible. I made another version, which turned out much better, but not ideal. shootingemstar.pngshooting/emstar2.png

The earlier version of explosion didn't survive, so showing you this final one. explosion.png

I also made all the buttons.

But my real challenge for today was the soundtrack! ARGh, I'm so exhausted because of it. The first thing, that grinds my gears is software. I haven't found anything simple for the simple piano melody, so I had to use Fruity Loops demo. It brought us arguing whether it can or can not be used because of license. Then, I spent time trying to figure out how does this f*cker work, because too many functions for me and my simple aim. Ok, I started making the tune, which is really simple, because I have no knowledge in music at all. After FINALLY getting everything done, I realised, that you can't open the saved file again. And writing these words I also realised, that I'm an idiot! IDIOT! You can't open the file, but you can actually export the tune in wav or mp3, and I didn't check it! AAAAAAAAAAARGH! How I made it first? Recorded the music with my mobile phone! Well, yeah, it turned to sound a little vaporwave, lol, but tbh the quality is not good. Well, learning from your mistakes is a part of game development.
