Ludum Dare 50

Can you make performance optimizations after the deadline?

I'm aware that according to the compo rules, you can make important bug fixes to the game even after the deadline. Can you make performance optimizations? I only just ran the Godot profile on my game and discovered some clues into why it sometimes runs so slow...

Ludum Dare 51

I'm in!

I'm been so looking forward to the next Ludum Dare! This will be my 5th one!

Just yesterday, the Godot 4.0 beta came out. I'm a little sad that 4.0 isn't officially out yet in time for the compo but I'll try using the beta. We'll see how it goes... In the previous Ludum Dare, I've tried using Godot+Vim integration to better write scripts (I don't hate the internal editor in Godot, I just miss Vim 馃ゲ). I remember that there were a few problems with the integration, something with clashing tabs/spaces for indentation. As a preparation for the compo, I'll try making a setup that works so I don't have to tinker with it during the weekend.

Last time, I made my first 3D game for a Ludum Dare. I've bitten a lot more that I can chew, it was a fantastic experience but left me with no time for polish and sounds. The game suffered from it. This time, I'm gonna switch back to 2D and try to keep it as simple as possible. Also, most of my game jam games have no sound... Do you guys have any tips for making sound effects and music for a programmer? Previously I always used sfxr/bfxr and that worked great. I also heard about Bosca Ceoil, haven't tried yet.

Lovely theme!

Looks like I'm one of the few that actually like this theme... I'm gonna make something that is tied to a regular beat so I can make a nice music for the game. I've been watching videos about SunVox today and I wanna use it. I'm thinking about a simple 2.5D shooter where you shoot the gun every 10 seconds?

Theme idea I cannot use

I had a game idea where you game window would close every 10 seconds. You would have to perform some action in the game (collect a coin for example) to open a new window which would then also close in 10 seconds. You would have to keep opening windows to continue playing.

Unfortunatelly, I cannot go with this because Godot cannot open a new window. There are rumors on the internet that Godot 4.0 will be able to handle it, but I don't have time to study the docs to figure out whether it can or not. So I have to figure out something else.

The day starts with tech difficulties

I'm using Godot together with Webstorm as an external editor. I have everything set up in Godot settings - double clicking on a file in Godot opens it in Webstorm. But, when I edit a script in Webstorm and save it, Godot does not seem to care and does not see the changes. It keeps complaining about old script version (like missing class_name which is clearly shown when I open the script in Webstorm). What's this??? Anyone ever encountered this before? :disappointed:

I think I finally have an idea for a game

I've been struggling for the past 3 and half hours to come up with a decent idea for a game. And technical difficulties with the editor. Oh well. I was thinking about making a simple drag&drop city builder where some event happens every 10 seconds. But I cannot come up with any meaningful goal. Then there was a shoot em' up, you either shoot every 10 seconds, reload your gun every 10 seconds, or enemies respawn every 10 seconds. Again, a little generic and boring, and I could not find any good game goal besides just surviving.

Finally, this idea popped up about cooking pizza. You receive a new order every 10 seconds and have to make pizza with those ingredients. The final pizza is then scored. You see a table, next to that is an oven and buckets with ingredients (I think), and you drag&drop ingredients together to mush them, then throw them in the oven.

Pizza making idea

I have an ugly kitchen, it's a start of something.

Basic level sketch

The base of the game mechanics are done so I was sketching up how the final level could look in the game. I can't really draw so the way I'm doing this is that I started with a super low-resolution image in Aseprite, and I'm slowly upscaling it to my target resolution and adding detail. It kinda works!

OH my god so close!

But the game is finally done. I was frantically trying to put in a simple tutorial at the very last moment. Whew, never was this close before!

There you go, Pizza Game!

Updated Mac version

CleanShot 2022-10-07 at 00.10.25.gif

Hey y'all. Today I got my Macbook fixed so I tried to reexport my game in the recentlty released Godot 4.0 beta 2. It now works on my Mac so the build should be fixed! (I also made a Windows version previously that already worked). Check it out and go make some pizza! :pizza:

I'm really missing a filter for games based on the platform they are built for

I'd love to quickly jump in during the day and play a few games. But I'm on Mac and in my experience, the games I see with the Smart filter are often built only for Windows :disappointed: . It would be extra helpful if there was a filter for the Games page to only display Mac and HTML games.

Post-compo scoring tweaking

CleanShot 2022-10-16 at 19.44.13@2x.png

For the post-compo update, I'm tweaking the scoring algorithm in my game. I made a separate testing room and a tool script which scores pizzas directly in the editor. I can now tweak the numbers and see the results in real time! I just love Godot

Only 2 votes left! Come make a few pizzas

I only need 2 new votes for my game! Come make a few pizzas in this frantic pizza making mess.

Ludum Dare 52

This time I can only make a really tiny game

I don't have much time nor energy for this Ludum Dare, so I'm gonna try to keep my game reeeally simple! :deciduous_tree: As always I'll be using Godot

Ludum Dare 53

I'm in!

It looks like I'm gonna be able to participate this weekend! 馃ぉ We even have a national holiday on Monday so this is the perfect weekend for Ludum Dare. I'll be using my standard stack: Godot 4, Aseprite, Sfxr/Bfxr. I'll do my best to keep my entry suuuuper simple, last 2 times I continued working on my games even after the compo, this time I won't have the time or energy to do that and I'd hate to leave something largely unfinished behind. :fingers_crossed: Good luck to everyone!

Ludum Dare 54

I'm in actually

At first it looked like I won't be able to join (again), but my weekend plans have been cancelled and I can make a game instead! I'm so happy!

Usual tech stack: - Godot - Aseprite - Bfxr or something

1 hours left, I finally have a game loop!

PHEW! I thought that I would not be able to make a game out of this thingy... It's barely playable but at least there's something to achieve now.
