LD 41

Let's do this thing!

There's a first time for everything and this is mine. First Ludum Dare and (fingers crossed) first playable game.

Looks like I have 8 hour shifts every day of the Jam, so I'll be happy with whatever I can do. Vive la quantité sur la qualité!

(No, I'm lying; I am a perfectionist and this will be hard. But I can't wait to see what all of you come up with at the end.)

Tech helping me out:

Models: Sculptris, Blender

Engine: Unity (WebGL)

Textures & Imagery: Photoshop, Illustrator

Sound: Bosca Ceoil, Blue Yeti mic, Audacity

Hardware: old MacBook, new Huion tablet

Hoo boy.

I guess compared to many, I was lenient. Just got rid of what didn't spark any ideas or would leave out whole sections of creators/types of games. Or leave everyone making the same two games. Or is just common sense, not a prompt.

Fine time to ask, but how exactly does this work? I'm guessing each theme suggestion gets a percentage score for the Y/N votes. But since many people were eliminating duplicates/similar ideas, that means the popular/timely "great minds think alike" groups of themes have almost no chance of any individual making it to the next stage. Is that a good thing?

Another Wallpaper? (Retina)

Seeing everyone else upload wallpapers, I figure I should share mine! (It's maybe not a good sign my computer was starting to freeze up with just illustrator; I think I'll give it a break for the next two hours.) ld41 wp-01.png

Progress?

So it's 27.5hrs in and nothing's gone right, but I'm learning and growing and going to make time for church in the morning anyway.

The game should get done so long as I swallow my pride and consume the right amount of caffeine to focus on using other people's code appropriately. Nothing I've improvised has worked and I need to stop hoping it will at this point. 😏

So long as I have the time to write it like it deserves, this should be a fun stealth farmer. Might even have some other genres invoked in the story. For now, though, I'm tired and sleeping.

Goodnight! I'm proud of y'all whose progress I've seen!

LD 42

Don't mind me.

It's been a crazy few months since the last (my first) jam and I'm not sure I'll even have a day to invest in this one--I'll be less than two weeks into a new job when it starts, so my brain may be fried and I may have let chores build up to fill my "free" time.

The main things I learned in LD41 (other than how amazingly supportive a community this is) were:

  1. Unity goes against my instincts because I learned programming in very simple dynamic languages. So LD42 will serve as my set motivator to dig into Godot. This'll be at least a couple hours in the next week to straighten out the basic workflow and see if it is any easier on my instincts than Unity.

  2. My finely aged Macbook Pro can't handle retopologizing sculpted models in Blender. So if I don't get a new computer, I needn't bother with Sculptris. Just gotta be okay with an at least slightly low-poly look.

If I can participate, my goal for this jam is to produce some mechanic (any customized code) that did not require me to step-by-step type along with a tutorial in order to avoid game-breaking bugs. Because LD41 was at least 60% painstakingly undoing any progress I tried to make without reference.

Engine: Godot or Unity

Sounds: Bosca Ceoil, Blue Yeti mic, Audacity

Graphics: Photoshop, Illustrator, Piskel

Models, texture maps, animations (if 3D): Blender

Ludum Dare 45

Once More

This one will span a family holiday, so we'll see how much time I actually have. But it would feel like a seriously missed opportunity when my goal for the year is to learn all the things if I didn't at least participate in this jam.

Of course, I didn't log in until now so that I can claim some innocence in the theme chosen. But hey, we all have fun working around and against the voting results anyway, right?

The thought right now is that there should be cool art and decent music to whatever I make, since those are the things I've been practicing. On the other shoe (that's the saying, right?) I've been completely ignoring Unity for the last year plus since I last made a lose/win state game. Just gotta get the code to function real quick so the decorations can matter.

Software: Blender, Photoshop, SunVox, Ink? Unity? JavaScript?

Hardware: Blue Yeti mic, Huion tablet, one laptop to rule them all, a sore knee and probably the vestiges of the cold I just caught

Ludum Dare 46

Semi prepared for once?

Third real time's the charm! I had the good fortune of actually warming up with a week-long jam last week, which reminded me to check when Ludum Dare was starting, and lo it was soon! So, conveniently, I should be less lost in a fog of forgotten programming. Maybe we'll get a real UI or camera movement in place this time, now that I've made parts of those work at least once? Or I'll just suffer less for having a Twitch stream scheduled on the last day of the jam. (I might elect to have a few mini streams while I'm working through the weekend, but we'll see.)

Whatever happens, I'm excited. And yeah, for all of you wondering who to blame for the theme selection, I'm one of the open-theme fans. My main criteria is that it spark mental images for inspiration and devs get the option on which parts of the game directly reference the theme, so words and phrases with multiple meanings win out.

More importantly, have a wallpaper!

wallpapergiflarge.gif

They're big files! Download the day version or the night version, but as always be sure to rib any colleagues who choose the light theme in any context.

Alright! I'm expecting to be amazed and proud of everyone so good luck, good themes, good night!

Setting up lightning rods for the brainstorm

For anyone looking at these themes and worried about coming up with a game--first off, I recommend joining a group (like the LD discord) of people who might brainstorm publicly. If you draw a blank, they'll have some different idea combos to spark something.

Second, I usually take the final round of voting and draft an idea for each option to bounce off of as soon as I'm done despairing at whichever one wins.

My ideas are limited to things that don't really involve mechanics because uh I don't have those skills; each jam, I've been slowly building visual novel frameworks to the point of functioning at all. So my first ideas are more likely to be melodramatic before I can carve it down to comedy. But obviously you could consider more movements and user interactions depending on the kind of game you're attempting.

For example, this took me a couple hours on and off (hopefully a few make it to the last to save me time on Friday  ), but if these were the final round it would be a less time-pressed mental warmup than suddenly thinking about the theme when it's announced:

  • Delivery storks? pizza? tone of voice: conflict resolution through dialogue choice? viewpoint of a singing telegram associate who's decided to build or burn bridges for their clients without technically breaking contract

  • One time use plastic wrap? "don't wear out my name:" balancing the advice to use someone's name an unnatural amount to make them like you? fixing (an analogue of) the tragic AI ending? interactive fiction equivalent of a side scroller; no loops or retries?

  • Momentum extending spaceship arms to slow rotation, or similar, like performing a large scale slingshot maneuver to avoid destruction? frick politeness guide to getting out of social pressure situations? fighting executive dysfunction (post-apocalypse / in space / other fantastic setting for reasons not to fall back on other people and make it less boring--could combine with first thought)

  • Rain rein reign -- foiling a mad monarch's plans with your weather machine? finding the leak in your roof/pipes? "when it rains it pours:" a terrible horrible no good very bad day?

  • Something is missing a foodie vampire in search of an alternative to garlic (while their acquaintances keep noticing they aren't visible in mirrors, photos, sunny garden parties, etc)?

  • Split in two magician's assistant is secretly slime girl? (split screen showing different perspectives?)

  • Fragile burgeoning horror villain discovers he needs to consider the rationality of his responses to perceived slights? sheltering luggage from various hazards in travel (eventually revealed to be either kittens or symbolic baggage that the protag has to carry without the cover after it cracks)?

  • Leave something behind the above baggage idea might fit? or similarly "deep:" attempts from a parental figure hero/criminal to ditch a sidekick on their way to a dangerous job, before explaining that the sidekick's safety is more important than their legacy? or a polaroid horror story thing that keeps coming up as an idea for different almost-themes the last few jams, but requires either more programming or more unusual logic.

  • Expansion house of leaves rip off? nervous, self-conscious person slowly opening up and getting more options for who to talk to (as we also see further) as they relax (in time to delegate crisis response when something unexpected happens? or just in time to give a presentation they were dreading)? dressing an incongruous character from several expansion packs who then has to act like everything's normal in game?

  • Out of bounds escapee sportsball? the thoughts that pass through a character's mind as they fall eternally (existential crisis resulting in a rogue mc once they get reloaded)?

  • Instructions unclear "take care of them, if you catch my drift:" a fixer does exactly what he thinks his job description entails? trying to jack your assassin's time machine whose controls are exclusively marked with icons, symbols, and sound cues?

  • Shoot for the moon setting up the photoshoot for the first lunar colony's promotional material?

  • Playing both sides you're the gadget person assigned to give a known double agent tools that can't be used against you? drama mask allusion: trying to build a cover story for something embarrassing that isn't too funny or too dramatic so it doesn't spread far enough to reach people who know better?

  • Clockwork yeah I sure hope it does (things happen on schedule, but maybe the clock on screen is broken?)

  • You are what you eat the one eyed one horned flying purple people eater questions the specificity and morality of her diet (she started this on advice from a magazine in order to fit into her itty bitty teeny weeny yellow polkadot bikini--and it's worked, but she's hungry, and she needs to come out of the water)?

  • Lost signal ugly duckling a la Lilo and Stitch (literally calls for help by saying "I'm lost")? looking for your drone based on the content of the last transmissions? sending up flares from in front of like...the sun--figuring out a way to signal for help that won't be overwhelmed by an extreme environment?

Note I don't necessarily have more or better ideas on the ones I voted for; though occasionally the brainstorming convinces me to bump a negative vote up to neutral when I think of more paths everyone can take with it.

(Edit: you'd never guess I was planning a jam novel from how many words I throw at a screen for fun, would you?)

One day in and the basics kinda work!

cjgladback-ld48-progress-4-24-2021-1810

I'm so good at programming. But hey! We're almost up to the level of gameplay functionality I had at the end of last jam, despite losing all of the working versions of that base code. And with the added time back-of-mind ruminating on my story, I'm actually happier about it.

Dracula will almost definitely not make an appearance, though. Sadly.

Let an artist play your game?

I'm finally doing a playtesting stream for this jam--it'll be a short one tonight, but I hope to be back tomorrow or the day after to continue whatever we queue today.
